Actually, the Midway CO didn't send out the B17s until he "confirmed" the enemy force using his own search aircraft (PBY and B17).

They also didn't fly out to extreme range to do so. [;)]

Yea, the carriers were within range of the Marine SB2U-3 Vindicators on Midway (about 500 nm).

Few things are harder to put up with than the annoyance of a good example. -- Pudd'nhead Wilson

Here's a example of a hopeless raid being launched against a CV. Range 5 from the air base that is the proper size for the bombers. They do fly. Turn after turn. They will not fly against a CV running cap without some escort. It doesn't take much escort (as you can see here, Kittyhawks [:D]) but it will not send bombers unescorted against a CV with heavy cap. There is a fine line between suicidal and *stupid* mission plotting.

HA! You are the best Japanese player I have played...in four games...(Xargun's restart is a close second). Your moves are so efficient it set me back on my heels quickly and made me take risks that I wouldnt of dreamt of normally.

Second best ? Hmmmph... We will see buddy [;)] Although I must admit I am learning a lot in my beta game against Mogami... He isn't beating me up heavily yet, but everyone of his moves is covered with heavy surface forces... Looks like Mogami believes in overwhelming firepower... Actually I am learning a lot and realize I have made many mistakes in our game so far... Luckily I haven't got caught by any except the RN TF raid that cost me some cruisers and destroyers... Overall I have been lucky...

Looks like Reiryc and I need to compare notes.... If you're up to it Reiryc email me..
