WOW!
The first demo was good! This new one (dawnville) is even better!
I like the continuity, you start action in the morning hours, defending the same village you captured from the Fallschirmjägers in the first demo which gives a nice feel of familiarity to it, if you can say so.
Still looking good, and the action is the most intense I've seen! I started getting used to play the first scenario on Veteran, but this is a challenge even on Normal difficulty.
I was shellshocked twice - first when the PzIV shoots the wall out when running back to the church, second time dashing over the road. The pitched whine, the slowmotion and eventually you end up flat on your belly. Awesome.
Good thing I've got this on pre-order. :p

Judging from the reviews, the Russian scenarios are the best. From all of the screenshots I've looked at, it looks like the Stalingrad level or atleast part of it is exactly the same stuff from the film Enemy at the Gates

Played the demo again... they must have tweaked something since the first demo, even on Hardened this is tough!

Whew. Bought it yesterday and finished this afternoon. Not from the game being too short, but because I wouldn't stop playing. I recommend it to those that want an atmospheric, well done WW2 fps. I am usually really unhappy with scripted games, but this one's pretty great fer the most part. Play the hardest level, no health packs.

I could have done without the car chase, the manning of the AA gun and the tank mission (though the last one was enjoyable). The infantry battles were great. Pegasus Bridge (day and night) was amazing. The firefight during the counterattack was the best fps moment for me yet. BUT then I felt it was somewhat less enjoyable when I had to take out ALL of the enemy tanks myself. "Nobody fights alone"-I feel like I did! The fellow soldiers allied to you are great for atmosphere, but pretty random when it comes to helping you out I found.
I would LOVE if someone were to do a single player game from this engine with pure infantry fighting. Realistic WW2 locales. Randomly spawned AI, not reliant on heavy scripting (like OFP). Lastly, no stupid "fly the airplane/drive the tank" missions-and no stealth missions. I'd play it forever.

I think the hype got to me
I am a little bit underwhelmed with the game
sure its great...but not quite the level I was expecting
Its like...when GTA III came out it was one of the best games I ever played
Vice City is better...but I played and enjoyed GTA III more
When your not expecting somthing to be great..its better

I liked it. The single player game isnt long enough tho. But there are some very fun level, loved storming the Reichstag as the soviets to get that flag above it. And the Pegasus bridge levels are fun too.
But what I liked the most is the multiplayer. Weapons are very lethal, movements are very nice, no bunny hopping everywhere. The maps are fun too. I really loved the kill-cam, when you get shot, you see the 5 seconds before that from the pov of the guy who killed you, can show just how dumb you were sometimes

That, and it also allows you to see if your slayer used any "unorthodox" methods.Fredflak wrote:I really loved the kill-cam, when you get shot, you see the 5 seconds before that from the pov of the guy who killed you, can show just how dumb you were sometimes

The only thing I miss is soldier classes like in BF or ET, but since your choice of weapon in effect defines your role it's not that big of a deal.

Erm... doesn't that rather screw up life for the snipers out there, or indeed anyone taking up a defensive or concealed position ? Sounds like an idiotic "feature" to me. I'll be sticking with H&D 2, I think.
Not really, since I think you can turn it off on a server, and in Objective matches you only respawn when one side wins, and dead people cant talk to those still alive. It does make it interesting, as from round to round, you have to relocate to find new sniping spots.Hertston wrote:Erm... doesn't that rather screw up life for the snipers out there, or indeed anyone taking up a defensive or concealed position ? MP is really fun.
I would suggest you check it out.
Hurtgen forest rules!!
I also racked up 38 kills and 2 deaths in Carentan all with the goos ole Garrand.I picked up a MP 40 for a bit for clearing houses but for the most part the garrand did the work.
I musta been in the "zone" cause I havent come close to that since!!

you know whats odd?
i really enjoyed BF1942 single player...
yes it was a little silly. but it was very big, very open, which made it feel realistic. you were constantly advancing, falling back, flanking to take/retake important objectives. unlike in COD where all that movement was scripted. yes, i definately could have done without the gun-manning, tank driving, and ESPECIALLY sneak around/infiltration missions. as soon as it said "you'll be prepared for some special missions" i knew i was in for some crappy typical fps, boring levels. and those ones really, REALLY were. those sneaking around type missions felt like every other mediocre shooter out there, and it definately didnt stand above some of the better ones, Rogue Spear, NOLF etc...
but the war missions, the first american ones (taken straight from BOB) and the russian missions (directly from EATG) were pretty good (although the one where you have to hold that house was very silly. like 10,000 germans attacked you. it was a little hokey)
and other than the fact that friendly ai was pretty much useless i liked the interaction.
i would like to see a game like that, but with the openness of BF1942, with non linear/static objectives. so, hey, you took the church.... but then jerry decides to flank you and you need to fall back... and oh look, you did good and forced them back... i think there's more replay in BF1942 than COD, because, well, its not the same game every time... i wouldnt mind being able to hold pegasus bridge without retreating, if we play well enough (instead of just being told to pull back every time)
and i would also like to see ai interaction. BF1942 had none, and i would like more actual singleplayer type elements. officers that last throughout, or if they get killed, they get killed. more talk between characters. more orders being shouted etc.

I agree, Runes. I hope that scripting for single player AI gets more "open ended" so that games have some replay value. Op Flashpoint comes the closest with their mission maker-you can plot AI waypoints such as "patrol" that allow a general location to be full of enemy.
This problem is my biggest gripe with FPS games, one time play in single missions isn't enough-since my crap 56k modem won't allow for decent multiplay most of the time. ALso, playing "bunnyhopping" preteens isn't my idea of a good time.

the actual war levels of COD were pretty intense. i remember when i downloaded the demos i was blown away at their amount of hectic action. but even as i played them over and over (and over... **** they are fun still) i realized it was extremely predictable (now i just play it to try different tactics. maybe i can play the level with only a carbine. maybe this time i'll run to the truck instead of the house..etc)
i would like it if it maintained that intensity throughout by not having the objectives all scripted.
and the car chase levels were indeed hokey. they seemed more in place in some other, less serious shooter. By the way, No One Lives forever takes the cake for that. and the second one had the best chase EVER. EVER. running around on a little tricycle, fighting a big angry italian clown. heh.

Got it today. Played it through. (does that answer your question, Frank?
)
Impressions:
First and foremost - it looks awesome. Just awesome. My fav is the Stalingrad scenarios. Sounds and animations are very good, and the interface is also very good. Especially the "look down sights" and ability to lean and fire.
Very good maps. Altough you need to walk them through in the right order, they don't look too linear and I did get lost at times. Frustratingly so on the "defend the apartment building" scenario, where it took me forever to find the 2nd floor PzBuchse.
Yeah, I didn't like the carchase maps either. Especially not the one at the airstrip, with the Stukas. I mean, come on...
I didn't like the almost nonexistent ability to jump. I guess this is to stop players from taking unwanted shortcuts and thus mess up the script but still... Also though the enemy AI is good, it's frustrating to have to do things yourself at times, and at other times see your squaddies rush forward altough you're point, only to see them cut down. Not that it matters for gameplay, which is another quirk.
HATE the AI MG42 gunners. They have superscopes and a 6th sense. No matter how far and slow I sneak up on them, they zero in in no time. Then again, without it, it would be all too easy.
Like that your squaddies warn you about grenades.
Also like, especially in the Stalingrad maps, that the Germans actually say which way they will flank you on. Helps a bit.
Realism? Nah, this is MOH:AA with a cream topping. :p But for a FPS, very good even if I'd loved to see the open non-scripted maps from multiplayer games like BF1942 and Enemy Territory.
Next: Multiplayer.
