9th Company

Post by Przemcio231 »

I just came back from the Cinema... i'v seen "9th Company" a Russian War Movie about Afganistan and i think its great it showe the brutality of a war without any patriotic crap about dying for your country and such as shown in any US made War Films. The Special Effects are on Hollywood level so they are nice to see[;)] I recomend this movie to everyone interested in a good War movie showing how the war really likes not some candy hollywood crap[:D]

The Beast was a good movie about Afganistan but on a small scale and a relatively small budget. Good cast.

Well, the 9th Company visual effects were done by crew in Helsinki, Finland...and while they did very good job, they did put bit too much "hollywoodism" into explosions etc. IMHO. Antonov crash scene is awesome, though.

In case anyone cares the Russian title is "Devataya Rota". Good movie. The Russians are good at making gritty war movies. Contrary to pupular belief, a lot of the movies made in the 60s and after on the subject of WW2 are very realistic with hardly any of the party line BS. Some of my personal favorites are "Batalyoni Prosyat Ognya", "Ofitseri" and "Ati Bati".

The first is about a batallion that is ordered to ford the Dniepr and is then abandoned to its anihilation as a diversionary measure. (Based on a book of the same name).

Ofitseri is more about the home front, a boy growing up in the deprivation of wartime USSR while his father dies at the front. Its actually more about the post-war generation and why they turned out the way they did. I think this is also based on a book, but I havent read that one.

"Ati Bati" is actually a screen version of a song (called "Na Bezimyannoy Visote"), if you can beleive it. The story goes that it was an actual occurence that the composer of the song, a wartime military newspaper correspondent, heard of and wrote the song. In any case, its a story of a Komsomol recon company that is sent behind enemy lines to capture a hiltop that controls an important crossroads. The unit of 18 men is then annihilated in repeated assaults. Only 3 men survive to return to their own lines. There was actually another movie, the name of which escapes me, based on the same premise. But that one was set in 1960s USSR, something about how two old war comrades meet again, with many flashbacks and such.

As a young teenager I remember seeing excellent Russian war movie (shoot in black & white) where here were almost no dialogue - just sounds IIRC.

I can't remember the name of the film but I think that it might be "Ivanovo detstvo" by famous Andrei Tarkovsky

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056111/

(this movie was also translated as "My Name Is Ivan" or "Childhood of Ivan" or "Ivan's Childhood")

Other Russian war movies I saw (and I think I saw many of them) were 100% pure propaganda... [:D]

Have to admit that the only Russian war movie I've seen is "The Beast". Unless you count "Potemkin" as a war movie...

Yup.

Never saw that one but I thought it was about Perestroika-era mafia (which is why I never saw it).

EDIT: Yeah. I just asked a Russian colleague of mine and he says that its about a fellow that comes back from Afghanistan and gets mixed up with the mafia. Russsian title is "Po Prozvischu Zver" aka "Nickname: Beast".

Yup.

Though... this was not Russian movie per-se... it was only about Russians in Afganistan... (I think some "augmented" Augusta helicopeters were used to mimic Mi-24 BTW)...
