5 minute guide critique...

Post by barbarossa2 »

First of all, I would like to say that I think the 5 minute guide is great. And I commend its creator for doing it! It is a wonderful way to whet someone's appetite who has never seen the game before...

I would like to make one or two recommendations...

Make it a seven minute guide...

Add a two minute overview of a major scenario in action. Talk about supply, etc. I think that the 5 minute overview presented several important concepts about the game in a very apporopriate smaller scenario. But seeing this in action with hundreds of units struggling over an arifield, describing artillery support, air support, etc, would move the potential buyer closer to a purchase. And I don't think this would take more than two additional minutes... Just move from the 5 minutes already done right into the middle of a Maleme airfield scenario.

Just an idea.

Question: How many times has this 5 minute guide been downloaded by unique addresses? And I would still suggest placing a "click here now to see a free demo" sign to the banners appearing on MatrixGames.com.

That would involve changing the catchy title, so that's not going to happen [;)]

Seriously : I was already thinking about doing a second one - Arjuna has put some ideas on paper as well - if I can find that mail again ...

Good suggestions all around - copied for future reference

That's Top Secret info (meaning : I don't have a clue - they never tell me anything [:D] - Daniel and JeF might know )

Is that a sly way to say "I want a demo" ? [:D]

Although "5 Miute Guide" played on my WMP a week ago, it does not play now.  There is a very brief codec error message and then the audio begins w/o any video at all.  The Trailer plays just fine.  So, where is the problem?

Windows media player 10.

I just installed WMP 11; it's the same situation.

I'm going to upload the file again - it seems corrupted somehow.

I have no idea about the number of downloads...  perhaps the Matrix team can enlighten us.[&:]

It is still doing the same thing. Audio is clear, but no video at all. There is still a brief flash at the start of a "codec missing". It does not seem likely that my PC is at fault as the other download plays fine; either by online viewing or download.

BTW, my desire is to have this down load available to the browsing public. I have gained some real experience with this game. I just finished an on line game of 'Charge of the Centaurs". It took 3 sittings at over 2 hours each. Although I failed to force my esteemed opponent to crumble and weep, I did achieve a draw ( I was hanging on by a thread), and in doing so, have learned much.

I must say that the more I "play" this game, the more impressed I am with it.

Same with issue for me too. Audio is fine, just no video. Using WMP 10. My trusty and usually fail-safe, multiformat and Codec infused WinDVD 8, only managed audio. I tried converting the avi using a DivX app I have--no dice.

Hi,

I just checked.  I have no problem with Windows XP and WMP 9.
Both with the streaming version and the ZIP version.
I'm not sure about which codecs are installed though.  Your problems might be the improper codecs loaded.  But I don't know how to solve this.  AFAIK, WMP is able to recognize the missing codecs and download them on its own.

Cheers,

JeF.

Your problems might be the improper codecs loaded.

A way to test this is using a free program called G-spot

http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

It basically scans your avi,... file and tests to see if you've got the necessery codec(s) installed and other problems you might have with a movie file

Hope this helps

It was giving me the same problems as well, until recently. Audio, but no video... Somehow it worked last time I tried. This is the only video file from the Internet I had had problems with to that point.

OK. Just downloaded this and there are problems:

With WMP 10 the splash screen comes up and then the show stops. By moving the film advance slider at the bottom of the screen takes you to a new part of the guide but all you get is a new still picture, no sound, no forward movement of the film.

With QT 7.13 you get the sound (and beautiful it is Eddy) but no pictures at all, neither moving nor still.

With ATI File Player 7.5 it plays and sounds perfectly.

With Real Player 10 it plays and sounds perfectly.

I guess it's a codec thing. (See, I do know about stuff! [:'(] )

So, I took Eddy’s advice (you’d have thought I’d have learned by now), installed GSpot. It told me that the video required XVID and that I already had it installed … undaunted, I downloaded the very latest version of XVID and:
Hey Presto!
….. same results. [:(]
