Talonsoft's World At War $139?
Was over at Amazon and decided to do a search for Talonsoft's World At War. This is what I found (link). $139.44 doesn't include the box or play aids (the manuals were on CD but there was a typical Talonsoft booklet in the box).
Darn, better not let the wife see this! I have all my original Talonsoft games in their boxes with all the manuals and other items. Guess I know what I'm going to retire on! [:D]

Yeah but those prices will go down once the matrix redux is out. I have multiple copies of most of the Campaign and Battleground series with manuals and in some cases boxs. But I'm not ready to sell them;^)

RE: Talonsoft's World At War $139?
I can testify from experience that relying on "collectible games" as an investment is risky business. I had a board game collection that I thought might be worth in excess of $20,000 - then the bottom fell out of the market and my $60 mint condition games started going for $6.75. Prices have rebounded a bit, but I wouldn't ever count on games as an investment for your retirement (except for the joy of playing them... and later just feeling and smelling them once your eyesight fades and senility keeps you from remembering the rules) [:D]
Can you imagine the nurses talking about the "old guy up in 246" who keeps shouting "DNO...DNO" and throwing thousands of little cardboard pieces into the air and muttering in something that vaguely sounds like German?
Such a sad fate...
Almost as bad as the old gamer clutching a cracked and battered CD case when they can no longer remember what a computer is....

Even worse is when someone you've never heard of (me) knows what DNO means, and still has a copy with the counters unpunched, but the maps battered and torn like real sit rep maps.
Sigh.
I really hope Matrix can come through with the Campaign Series after falling down on Combat Leader.

I had promised myself I was not going to post on Christmas but I just wanted you to know that the Campaign Series team is doing a great job and we will be ready soon.

In that event, congratulations! And of course, a Merry Christmas to you and yours David. I'm quite looking forward to getting rid of my East Front and West Front coasters

<Chuckle> I have the maps in perfect condition and the counters all punched and stuck in parts cabinets (where they have been sealed for the last decade or so). We probably ought to get our collections together and try to sell DNO <mint> for $500 on Ebay or something. [:D]

So has there been any official word on what the release price of the new edition of the Campaign Series will be?

Heard that release date was something around Feb or March. I hope. Can hardly wait till the date is confirmed.
Would be intresting to know how much money I will have to invest.

gentlemen, I await the release of the revised talonsoft game as much as anyone, however why do you think this $139 thread continues to find it's way to the top of the posts anyway? I am greatly concerned about this development and i will not buy the new release at any price reguardless. I expect a fair and level headed price set for this game or i will continue to play my old disks until the sun goes down on me.
RE: Talonsoft's World At War $139?
I'll Pay 5 Dollars !!!! Cold Hard Cash for the very first copy released. Anyone think they can top me ?
10 bucks if ya can get J.T. to sign it =)

Not quite sure why you would expect anything else.. the price you saw is only because it's now a rarity and the seller hoped to snare a collector. There have been some copies of CC3 spotted for silly money recently, too, but nobody is likely to pay $150 for CC:CoI either.
Pricing is an interesting one here, though, as with all the Talonsoft re-releases. The games would be worth paying $49.99 (absolute tops IMHO) for as a bundle if you don't have them, BUT I suspect Matrix are only too well aware that a large chunk of their potential market already does have at least one or more of them. As I have all of them I can't see me buying the redux even at a cheaper price unless the new feature list is significant (I'll be buying CC:CoI for that reason; there's plenty of new stuff to justify it).
RE: Talonsoft's World At War $139?
I own all of em and can't play them. None of the games work on any of my XP boxes, either in compatibility mode or using VMWare. It's a function of the hardware and other software that I have. I've long since lost my Windows 98 disk, and can't be bothered to buy/download/borrow a copy just to install on a second hand PC that I'd buy. So, all my eggs are in Matrix's basket.
The last time I've played a 'Campaign Series' game was since before XP officially launched.

The versions that I play under WinXP are from the World At War collection. These don't work on your machine? I'd be interested if you would relate the software/hardware items that prevents these game from working, so I can avoid putting those items on my rig. I intend to keep a WinXP box for several years, at least till I get all warm and cozy with Vista. Thanks.
RE: Talonsoft's World At War $139?
I was never able to get World at War' either in the stores, or by other methods. The orignal non WAW versions don't work on any of the 8 rigs I've tried. Just too many combinations to list. But they include both store bought and custom built rigs. About the only thing I'd be willing to provide is the exact OS version and updates. Is that any use at all?

That is truly bizarre, Tom.
I have a number of installs (presently 11) from the original releases to the lastest World At War complitation for testing purposes and have had no problems no matter how old or new the machine is I am using.
Take a look at the following link, possibly it can provide some assistance.

Nah, I tried that a long time ago. Thanks. The first problem was the game/s not installing at all. So I a) changed compatibility mode for all executables one by one in all combinations, but still no install, b) did the DirectX trick and got the games to install, but they would not run. Or, I should say they would run and crash immediately. That's the second problem. Never having had access to World at War, I gave up. I brought Gary Grigsby's WAW game just to support Matrix, never bothered to play it, and have been happy banging away at Civ 2, 3 and 4 and SPWAW for a number of years.
My options are either to buy a Win98 box (I've been threatened if I buy another computer), or to wait for Matrix. I'm taking the latter option

thanks though for the link.

Hi Tom
Another alternative you might want to try is to create a folder on your harddrive and just copy and paste the contents of East Front folder (or whichever game you are installing) on the CD into that folder, patch the game with the required and necessary patches and run the game from there - using the, for example, East Front.exe

Jason; I'll give this a shot when I get home from work tonight. I've never tried this approach, so it might work. This just might get me away from Civilization IV!
Tom
(I'll report back here, and I'll give it a shot with all of the CS games I own).
