1982 Season - St. Louis Cardinals
Mgr: CrashDavis

Thought I write a brief opener before the season starts. I've always wanted to replay this season with the Cardinals using the '82 schedule and see how I fair versus the real life counter parts who won 92 and lost 70, beating the Braves 3-0 in the NLCS, and then taking "Harvey's Wallbangers" (Brewers) 4-3 in the World Series.

Using RetroSheets Game Logs for '82, I am using the same starting lineup & starting pitcher for each game, and will adhere
to player debuts as they appeared in '82 for STL (Willie McGee 5/10/82, John Stuper 6/1/82, Jeff Lahti 6/27/82, Jeff Keener 6/8/82, Eric Rasmussen 9/1/82, Kelly Paris 9/1/82, & Gene Roof 9/7/82).

Cardinals begin there season at Houston against Joe Niekro. Cardinals send veteran Bob Forsch to the mound. Astros struck
early on a 444' solo HR off the bat of Ray Knight. Niekro pitched 6inn giving up 5hits and 1run. Dave Smith & Frank Lacorte
would combine for the Hold & the Save as the Astros would win 4-2. Forsch would go 6inn giving up 9hits and 3runs. The only
bright spot for the Cardinals was the surprising performance from 3b Steve Braun who was 4-0-3-2 with a 2b & 2rbi.

Second game of the 3 game series. On the mound for the Astros - Don Sutton. Cardinals send LH John Martin to the hill.
With George Hendrick nursing a strained thumb, Lonnie Smith moves to lf, Dane Iorg moves to rf, and David Green will
come in and play cf.
Cardinals would score a run in the 3rd, 5th, & 7th innings. Martin pitched flawlessly allowing only 1hit in 6inn & 3Ks.
Sutton would last 6inn giving up 3runs on 9hits. Cardinal Ace closer Bruce Sutter was brought in in the 8th after RP Doug
Bair gave up a single and issued a walk to the first two Astros in the inning. Sutter promptly induced a flyball to
rf Iorg, who throw out the runner tagging from 2nd (Terry Puhl).
Sutter had troubles in the bottom of the 9th, giving up a leadoff single to Knight, then walking Phil Garner, before
Denny Walling would deliver a 1out double down the rf line - scoring Knight. With 1out and runners on 2nd/3rd, mgr Crash
called for the intentional BB to Jose Cruz to keep the double play in order. Unfortunately, Sutter's next pitch to Tony
Scott ended up as a fly ball to lf Lonnie Smith. Garner would score on the sac fly as Smith kept the runners pinned at
1st/2nd. With the score now 3-2 w/ 2 out, Sutter got Kevin Bass to fly out to cf to end the game and preserve the win.

Cardinals send their strongest pitcher to the mound - Joaquin Andujar - to square off against Astros Nolan Ryan.
Cardinal Tito Landrum would get the start in rf today, while Hendrick continues to heal.
Ryan sailed through 5inn getting 5Ks along the way. But in the top 6th, Porter led off with a 3b, and was driven
home two batters later by Landrum's single up the middle.
Cardinals scored again in the 9th when Gene Tenace came in to PH for Andujar (8inn 5hits, 3Ks), and drove the first
offering 375' over the lf wall. Sutter would come in to close out the 9th thanks to 1 of 3 DPs turned in by the Cardinals
today.

Opening Day at Busch Stadium as the Cards begin a 3-game series against the Pirates. Cards RH Steve Mura has the start
against PIT Larry McWilliams. Only change for the Cards today is rf Iorg is in the lineup batting 5th.
Cardinals start the scoring in the 1st with back-to-back singles by Tommy Herr and Keith Hernandez, and a sac fly by
Porter that scores Herr. They would use the same process to add another run in the 3rd and lead 2-0 after 3inn.
The Pirates wold tie the game in the top 4th with a 2run HR from Bill Robinson over the lf fence.
Cardinals would add another run in the 6th (sac fly from Lonnie Smith that scores Ozzie Smith), and another run
in the 7th (Hernandez scores from 3rd while the Pirates turn a 1-6-3 DP ).
Mura went 6.1inn with 5hits, 2runs, and 4Ks). Steve Braun continues hitting solidly & had 2 2b. Ozzie Smith finally
picked up his first hit (and run scored & SB) of the season.

Not much to tell except the Pirates pitcher Rick Rhoden shut us down on 5hits today. Meanwhile, they scored 4 in the
3rd and 5 in the 4th and went on to coast to a 10-0 win. The stat-of-day is Dave Lapoint's 108.00 ERA after allowing
5hits & 4ER in 0.1inn of "relief".

Cardinals open a 3 game series w/ Cubs at Wrigley Field. Thru 5 innings, Cardinals led 4-0 behind Joaquin Andujar.
Cub pitcher Randy Martz was driven from the mound after 4.1inn. But the wheels came off in Cub half of the 6inn when
Andujar loaded the bases and Leon Durham crushed a grand slam to CF. The Cubs added another 3 runs in bottom of the
7th off RP Jim Kaat, and went on to win by the score of 8-4. This is now the 3rd stright loss by the Cardinals, following
their 3 straight wins.

Things didn't start well for the Cardinals. SP Andy Rincon took the mound for STL and they were hoping for more than
the 1.2inn, 2ER, & 6BB from the youngster. John Martin had to be brought in on only 2 days rest (he only lasted 3inn
on the 12th). Martin held the Cubs scoreless thru the next 5inn. Doug Bair gave up a solo HR to Leon Durham that
brought the score to 4-3 Cardinals. Closer Bruce Sutter retired the Cubs in the 9th inn to break their 3 game loosing
streak.

The rubber game with the Chicago Cubs wraps up with Chicago sending SP Doug Bird to the mound against SP Steve Mura. Bird
would go 6inn and take the loss, while Mura would go the distance giving up 6hits and 1run in the win. Darrell Porter
would go 3for4 with a 2b & HR.

Phillies come to S.Louis for a 3 game series, and LH SP Steve Carlton starts the series for Philly. Cardinals counter
with Bob Forsch. But 38 yr old Carlton is a meance holding St. Louis to just 1hit thru 6inn. Cardinals managed just
1 run in the game (off RP Stan Bahnsen), while Phillies pushed 3 across againt Forsch. Phillies win 3-1.

Once again Andy Rincon got shelled in the first inning by giving up 3 runs on 3 walks before getting the hook. He got
no one out. Steve Mura came on in relief but would give up 3 runs in the next 3inn worked. The official scorer gave
the loss to Mura, although I can't imagine how Rincon did not get the loss.

Cardinals visit the Pirates for a 2-game series. Cardinals took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the 9th. Brought in
closer Bruce Sutter. Omar Moreno walked. Johnny Ray sac bunted Moreno to 2nd. PH Willie Stargell sent the first
pitch he saw from Sutter 370' over the RF fence. Game Over.
Cardinals have now dropped 4 in a row.

After yesterdays disappointing loss, mgr Crash made a few subtle lineup changes to face Pirate SP John Candelaria - who
only allowed 4hits in their 4/11/82 game. Gene Tenace would get the start behind the plate, and Ken Oberkfell wold be
brought in obstensibly as a defense replacement in the 7th inning and contribute 2runs, 1hit, 3rbis, 1bb in a Cardinal
10-2 win. In fact, the 6, 7, and 8 hitters would account for 6runs, 4hits, and 6rbis.

STL 10 15 0

WP S. Mura (3-1)
LP J. Candelaria (2-1)

St. Louis breaks their 4-game loosing streak, with an overall record of 6-8 (5th in NL East Div) 3 GB Pittsburgh & Philadelphia.
