Subs in new patch

Post by GalacticOrigins »

Err, in the previous version of the game the German subs would stay at sea so I could hunt them. Now, with the latest patch, these subs 'shoot-n-scoot' and return to port. Sure, now Germany AI only builds 5-7 subs, they never lose any, and they build many more panzers.

However, once the USA is in the war and I have ASW 3 on Light Ships, I can put LtShips with most convoys, and the German Subs never leave port.

Um, this is kinda weird, since now there is no War at Sea!

Anyway, perhaps the German Subs should get less movement after engaging? Say, only 1 or 2 moves (prefer 2). That way, early in the war, up until 42-43 or so, the German AI can actually damage my shipping. It takes time to research ASW and the Uboats may actually get caught at sea. Besides, even a convoy forces the subs to go deep ...

this problem also appears in the other game, AWD.

It's always best to return your subs to the sub pens if you can. Of course, that effectively cuts your subs' range in half. You can't hit the distant shipping if you do that. So you weigh the risk of leaving your sub at sea in exchange for a hit on an easy target. That's gotta be tough for the AI. Too liberal and they'll lose all their subs. Too conservative and their subs are useless.

I would think that conservative is worse, as it gives the Allies easy security and free naval supremacy. Can't say I've noticed a u-boat problem yet, but Germany/Italy does seem to be weaker...maybe that's why. In my current game, they never even tried anything in the Med., and the Brits quickly grabbed Sicily, Sardinia, and Southern Italy (as well as Norway) all by themselves. Meanwhile, the only Russian territory the Axis have captured is Odessa. (It's Winter 1942) When the USA gets belligerent, the Axis are doomed.
