Ask for information

Post by Player05 »

Hello to everyone.

I post it in other forum (Starshattermods) but don´t have much feedback, only one and no much detailed. I try here for a true opinion.

Please i´d like to know from you that already have Starshatter TGS if the game in the current state don´t have a major problems because i read many times before that exist a "bug" when you try to send your fighters back to hangar (most of all are destroyed). And even land a fighter yourself is a "adventure" because you can cross the floor and be stucked in the ground i think a collision detection problem(sorry my english is very poor and don´t know if make myself clear here).

I´m a space sim fan and thinking in buy this game, because the game features and concept are so cool, but for me is expensive pay in dolar for it, and ask for a true opinion about the game playability.

Thanks in advance

I haven't had that bug yet. I've always been able to dock at the carrier with no problems.

However, i have another, pretty horrible bug. This bug is actually why i haven't played Starshatter for a while... A certain common type of enemy destroyer (Broadsword class) fires torpedos that cannot be shot down. All other torpedoes can. This bug makes the Broadsword easily able to take out other destroyers and even cruisers in seconds.

I love this game, but i really, really think we should get a quickfix for this.
I wonder if there is email support or something? The support page just links to these forums and the developers don't really seem to be around here too much.

Thanks Elukka. It´s kind of response what is i´m looking for.

The game concept are so great and the game features are great too, but i read about that things before and don´t see any response from developers or good support.

Please let me know if i´m wrong. Any other´s opinions and diferent point of view.

Thanks

Yes, support for Starshatter is totally lacking. I don't know if there's a reason for it or whether the developer simply gave up on it after finally hitting version 5.0.1 after so many years of work. I'd like to believe that development will resume at some point, however.

Besides the Broadsword thing, i haven't had problems. Except for the rare crash to desktop, but that happens.

Is there any way to contact a developer about the bug? PM, maybe?

Judging by replies, no more than 2 or 4 people bought the game.

Why no one that have the game could post a good or bad opinon about it, i´m asking to myself.

I´m waiting for true point of views of any version the game.

Judging by number of replies on a single low-traffic web forum is a pretty bad way to measure how many people bought a game.  Even though the game is primarily distributed through the internet, you have to imagine that only roughly 5% of people ever even bother checking the forums, and of those people who actually check out the forums only the tiniest fraction register, and of those people who register for the forums, only half actually post, and most don't check the forums more often than once every several weeks. =)

This does indeed seem to be a slow forum, yes. :) I just recently joined

However...

The game is pretty good, and the fact that you can switch the ship into emcon 1 (emission control that turns of almost every electrical system in the ship) and drift stealthily towards your target is very cool. I love the "standard" flight model that gives you the possibility of coasting with engines off with almost newtonian physics. I say almost because the ships are given a maximum speed to avoid "jousting" as could happen so often in I-War.

When it comes to bugs, the only real one I've encountered is the fact that fighters docking with the carrier have a high tendency of crashing. I don't know if this happens more when I'm farther away, even though it seems that way. I'm new to the forum, so I don't know how much this has been debated already.

The game looks very nice, and the feeling of being in space (with the newtonian flight model) brings me back to good old I-War... Which is a good thing :-)

When landing on a carrier, you are not supposed to slide along the floor when landing (even though the ships do that in the cutscenes and when taking off automatically). If you keep flying towards the designated cross at slow speed, you never ever crash (unless you're drunk or something) because the opening is huge. Landing your own ship is easy, but the AI ships do have some troubles at times. I've never flown the carrier except in the training mission where everything worked as it should, so all my carrier experience is as a fighter pilot. But I must say that being the leader of the battle group seems very interesting indeed. I can't wait for that promotion [:D]

The dynamic campaign is absolutely wonderful. I love the fact that if I kill an enemy destroyer squadron, it is really gone forever. I also like that you have to conserve your own forces and not do kamikaze-runs on enemy cruisers with your tiny fighter as it tends to deplete the squadrons of the carrier at an alarming rate. I also like the fact that the campaign has lots of news broadcasts and cutscenes that explain the course of the war. The menus are also very helpful in this aspect.

I really hope this game will keep being developed (even though it might be unlikely... i don't know. Space sims have never been really popular with the masses). I played the demo some time ago when it was v. 3.9 or something like that, but didn't buy the game then because of the DirectX 7 graphics (yes, I do like the pretty colors too). Now with version 5.0.1, the game is running beautifully with directx 9 graphics. It's not as pretty as graphics showcases like X3:Reunion and such, but the newtonian flight model, dynamic campaign and mission editor easily makes up for that.

If you have TrackIR: Keep in mind that if you buy it, the game cannot run with TrackIR 4. It only supports older versions of TrackIR for some reason. I just wanted to mention this as I was a bit disappointed myself because I didn't read the game information carefully enough. I thought I could use my TrackIR, but I couldn't. I was a bit frustrated the first evening (last week), but I assigned cockpit panning (and a button for view padlock) to the joystick and everything is ok now (even though I would love to use TrackIR in a future version)

I hope this answers your questions to some degree. Just ask if there's anything else you're wondering. I'll try answering as best as I can, but keep in mind that I only recently bought the game, so I haven't seen it all yet. :)

Hi,

Yngvef, gave you a pretty good overview of Starshatter:TGS .

Oh, for your information, there is a simple mod fix for the fighter crashes. [;)]

Seek and ye shall find. [:'(]

Now go out and get your butt in a Starshatter command chair. [:D]

No problem [:)]

Some time has passed since I wrote my first answer in this thread. Since then, I've made a small mod that fixes the problem with AI fighters crashing into the carrier when trying to land. The mod is on starshattermods, and eliminates any problems with the Orion-class carrier (the only friendly carrier in campaign).

Also, TrackIR 4 is now supported. In all fighter spacecraft (belonging to the Alliance, that you fight for in the campaigns) there is a virtual cockpit, and you can look around with 5DOF (5 degrees of freeedom with TrackIR; x, y, z, pitch and yaw. No roll). It's very immersive, and works very well in a chaotic fight. The game just went up another notch [:)]

The only issue I'm having with the game right now is that it seems to crash sometimes with patch 5.0.2. But I don't care, I play on ver. 5.0.1 instead, as I can't see any differences in the game. The 5.0.2 patch seems a bit like a beta-version to me, as it didn't come with a readme, fixes list or issues list.

Good luck out there [8D]

Err.. I forgot.[X(] The 5.0.2 patch adds trackIR 4 support ofcourse. The reason I don't play with TrackIR for the time being is that I am flying cruisers and don't need it. Just a clarification [:)]

I'm not really in need of any patches and loads of new features, Starshatter is already a tremendous one-man effort as it is. But I can't help but feel we're left alone here, Milo never posts anymore. Just to show he cares about his brainchild. Maybe he's burned out from all that work, I wouldn't wonder.
