Very slow screen drawing

Post by EagleMountainDK »

Hi I just bought AT and is really looking forward to play it. But the screen redraws very slowly. The Matrix logo in the start, pop up and start changing colours very slowly, then the credits pops up one line at a time.
The same goes in game, where the maps scrolls very slow and I can nearly see every horizontal line drawing. I'm running the 1.01 beta patch and running in my LCD screens native resolution of 1680x1050.

I've attached my dxdiag file.

And setting the resolution to 1024x768 helps a little. There is no difference in 1280x1024.

Cougar,

Thanks - looking at your hardware, I have no idea what might cause that. It should be running like a champ as it will run fine on much slower systems than yours. Hopefully Vic will have some idea.

Have you tried turning off all other programs to see if anything could be interfering?

Regards,

- Erik

@cougar,

you have a great system. it should run like a charm. is there anything special with your PC? anything what other people dont do with their pc's?

One thing you might try is playing it without the patch... it might be there is some unintended effect in it, but i dont think so.

Please give any more info about your system which is special.

kind regards,
vic

No, I really can't think of anything special about it. I use it primarly for playing games. I will try two things 1)un-install and re-install w/o patch and 2)trying the lastest non beta nvidia driver (only using it because of the Crysis demo).

Cheers

Ok version 1.0 didn't change a thing. Will try 1.0 with nvidia driver 163.71 and then 1.01 beta.

Hmmm it seems that Nvidia has broken something in their beta drivers. Re-installing the 163.71 drivers seemed to solve the problem.

Oh bugger, it seems that the slow redraw is back with the new Nvidia 169.21 WHQL drivers. Is anybody seeing this?

You can see my DxDiag here or in my first post in this thread.

Yep. I have the same problem. I started a new thread on this a little while ago and just now noticed your thread.

tm.asp?m=1771286

nVidia drivers v. 169.21 do the same thing here. I backed the drivers to the ones that shipped with this machine (v. 97.xx or so, wayyyy old) and the problem went away. Bringing down hardware acceleration in the troubleshooting tab in Windows also makes the slow redraw go away, but I'm not going to run my computer with crippled driver settings for one game.

Anyone else with this issue?

Hi McGlu,

again sorry for your troubles.

at least the turning of hardware acceleration solves the issue. And also puts me at a bit of a loss. How can hardware acceleration actualy cause lower draw rate then software rendering? it should be impossible.

well... apparently it isnt. for your system and drivers that is.

But you would help me alot by checking if the original v1.00-v1.02 had the same effect and if not.. if v1.10 caused it?

It will be some work for you to do a new install without patches, but it will allow me to get some valuable info.

It might be some patch changes aimed for increasing speed actually caused your system to "balk".

If you have the time to try how version upto v1.02 works on your system with hardware accel on let me know.

kind regards,
Vic

Not a problem, Vic. It's actually my computer at work, so I can check tomorrow. I'll let you know if it makes any difference.

Ok, I checked v1.00 and v1.02 and the problem is still there. Which is puzzling, because I'm pretty sure this worked on this machine in the past. Not sure what the problem might be. I've uninstalled and reintstalled the video drivers, reinstalled DirectX, reinstalled AT, etc.

It must just be something with this particular version of the nVidia drivers. My Vista desktop has a 7950 and my laptop at home has an 8600 series card, but both with different versions of the drivers, and everything works great.

Hi Cougar,

Disabling hardware accel should remove the problem.

My hunch is that the NVidia 8800 GTS card is the problem and it is somehow thinking it is trying to accel my graphics while it is actually doing the opposite.

My hunch is this card will leave AT alone under Vista.

I am thinking off i can think of something else.

kind regards,
vic

Hi Vic, I will try some of the different settings in the Nvidia control panel since disabling hw acceleration isn't an option since a lot of other game need it [:)]

Just bought AT and am enjoying it very much.  This thread caught my attention before I made my purchase as my rig uses the 169.21 drivers and I was afraid it might cause problems for me.    FWIW I am running the 169.21 drivers with a GeForce 8500GT card\windows xp sp2\ direct x 9.0c with no redraw issues.

Not sure if this helps anyone (I'm a bit on the tech challenged side) but thought I'd throw it out there, just in case.

Hi nirvana,

Sorry to hear. I am very upset about this. It seems to me its Nvidia's fault.

What you could try is installing an older driver: 162.65
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_162.65.html

I think that might fix the issue.

If you do let me know if it helps.

kind regards,
Vic

I'm not sure how its done when the drivers get fixed for specific games (just take a look at the release notes following the driver). So Vic have you tried to contact Nvidia and talk to them about our specific problem?

Cheers
