The '47 Dodgers (Old Settings)

Post by KG Erwin »

I'm gonna have one more try at the historical 47 Dodgers, with the basic settings on. NO early entry this time, historical rosters used. As GM, I have 100% control over my team's trades.

Note: I made corrections to players' field positions (per Baseball Reference.com), and restarted. This is the template I submitted to Padres fan for inclusion on his site.

In the power rankings, the Dodgers rank 8th. In the Brooklyn lineup, leading off is the newcomer, the black man from the AAA Montreal team.

Here's the team:

New York, Friday April 18. We go to the Polo Grounds for a short series with the Giants. Harry Taylor vs Monte Kennedy.

In the 1st, Robinson leads off with a double. Stanky bunts him to 3rd, and Walker drives him home with a single. Duke Snider, starting at CF today, follows with a 2-run HR to LF. 3-0, Dodgers.

NY makes it 3-1 in the 2nd. Bill Rigney hits a solo HR to RF in the 4th. 3-2. The Giants take a 4-3 lead in the 5th with a 2-run HR by Walker Cooper.

In the 7th, with the bases loaded, Kennedy is charged with a wild pitch. Cookie Lavagetto races in from 3rd, and we're tied at 4. Rojek and Robinson move up. Stanky grounds out, but Rojek beats the throw home! 5-4, Dodgers. Walker flies out, and Robinson scores! 6-4. Snider triples, and Stanky scores! 7-4. Kennedy is now rattled, and he walks in a run. 8-4. He's finished -- Joe Beggs relieves.

Bottom of the 7th: Hal Gregg relieves Taylor. Cooper hits a solo HR. 8-5.

8th Inning: Clyde King now pitching for Brooklyn.

9th Inning: Ken Trinkle pitching for NY. He gives up an RBI double to Lavagetto. 9-5, Dodgers.

KG Notes: the Dodgers have a plethora of talented outfielders, and not one, but THREE solid centerfielders. Reiser has never reached his full potential, and he may be desired by other teams. This Snider kid has plenty of batting power, but his defense needs work. Furillo is the best of the bunch: a solid batter and defender.

Then there is Dixie Walker, who holds some prejudice against our black player. Dixie has performed well, and has an excellent arm, but could be considered expendable. Gene Hermanski could fill his spot, if needed.

My team is very close to being a solid contender. Another topnotch starter is needed, but teams are jealously guarding their pitchers. I could also use a better secondbaseman, but right now, Eddie Stanky is playing beyond himself. I use a platoon at 3B and C, and I'm set at 1B and SS.

There are rumors that the Red Sox could be willing to trade Ted Williams. They want pitching, and I can't afford to part with any of my staff. Besides that, despite Ted's tremendous talent, I'm not sure if I could deal with his ego.

Nevertheless, I will be putting out some feelers over the next few weeks.

In the 6th, Walker grounds out and Robinson scores on a fielder's choice. 3-2. Reiser then slams a 2-run HR, and the Dodgers take a 4-3 lead!

Ed Chandler finished the game (no save opportunity). Lombardi wins it, and Barrett loses.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
KG Note: just on a whim, I offered up Vic Lombardi on the trade market, and couldn't believe the offers I received. The Yankees even offered up Joe DiMaggio! I didn't bite. THIS is how valuable starting pitching has now become.

Don

Actually, I had a funny feeling that the Cubs would be tough, considering the way my season has been going.

As of yet, no one has made any trades. The market is not too friendly at the moment. The Dodgers are the youngest team in the majors, so we're going through some growing pains. I'm still uncomfortable with the 35-man rosters, but I just have to deal with it.

Pittsburgh, May 15. Lombardi (4-2, 3.11) vs Tiny Bonham (4-2, 4.17).

The Dodgers suffer an embarrassing 10-1 loss. Bonham gets a CG win, Lombardi loses.

Joe Hatten is activated from the DL. Phil Haugstad goes back down to the minors.

Team notes: it's truly a struggle, as the Dodgers don't have a dominating player to lead the team. Jackie Robinson is becoming an inspiration, but we are winning as a team, with everyone playing a part. There are no individual stars on the Dodgers. As I've mentioned, the trade market is dry. We will have to rely on our own resources.

Pitt ties it in the 6th.

Preacher Roe relieves Ostermueller in the 7th.

Elmer Singleton pitches for Pitt in the 9th. Hodges singles. Reese bunts him to second. PH Hermanski singles, and Hodges scores! 4-3, Dodgers.

Clyde King pitches the bottom of the 9th, retires the side, and earns the save for Hatten. Dodgers win, 4-3. Singleton takes the loss.
