DH: Need some advice from GBG Managers

Post by CrashDavis »

For the GBG Managers out there:
What do you base your decision on when designating a player on your team as the DH?
Do you look for the best PH/RBI man for the middle of the lineup?
Or, perhaps a CH/AVG hitter for the 1st/9th slot in the order?

I would be interested in all thoughts on this from you guys.

Well, I know that this may not be where you're headed, but I first disregard fielding skills entirely. Too often do you encounter a player with great control of the bat, but unable to catch a dead turtle if someone walked up to him, covered it in 3M Spray Adhesive, and stuck it to his face.

If I'm understanding your question correctly, you are asking if we're looking for the power-hitter that sends them all landing in another state, or the guy that always hits, if not always hits hard. Frankly, I mold the DH to fit the area my lineup is soft in. For example, if I have many power hitters, I know that they can drive in runs; I don't need another "respectable average, great power" type of batter. In a scenario such as that, I look for the guy that hits well and gets on base- I then entrust the power-boys to bring that guy home.

When the scenario changes (as it is with my current Fictional Association), I have a desperate lack of power hitters, though everyone hits well and often. When I am offered this as a challenge, I seek the big bat, the slama' jammah' the guy who hits the ball and then has to register it with NASA.

I'm mostly a traditionalist, that occasionally tests the norm. I'm not a trendsetter, a trailblazer or a rebel- I don't mix with the formulas. I place my hitters in a batting order that matches the standard placement for the appropriate hitter. Thus, the DH would fit in wherever such a batter would normally go. The power hitter sits in the 3-or-4 slot. The contact hitter is in the 1-2-or-9 slot. I admit it looks odd to see a DH hitting 9th, but... if the need arises, you address it.

Is that what you were wondering or did I miss the mark entirely?

Thats good. I am interested in as many philosophies on DH usage as I can get. Thank you, FS.
