Dragoons advance Msus 1/1/42

We are to move against the Germans holding Msus Libya this month. Dam already a new year 1942. Hope this year brings some peace to the world. Sure am tired of all this killing and all this dam sand we slog around in all day. Msus is about 50 miles due east of the shore and close to a hundred miles sw of Mechili. It is one of the main roads that runs north to Tobruk from the coast.

A Co will have the left flank which is the extreme north flank of the map edge. They will have almost all open land to move across towards there northern objective. They will have close to 750 yards of this open land with visability very good today. It is clear and vis is around 1350 yards with no haze and no wind blowing at all. In another hour the sun will be on high and the temperature will be begin to climb towards the 100 mark even tho it is winter back home and cold as heck there.

B Co will have the middle and they too have mostly open ground except for one tiny ground swell about half way too the objectives. They too will be moving about 700 yards over this open ground with the Germans begining to fire at some where around 1400 to 1500 yards.

The Canadians or C Co will have the right flank which is the southern flank. Moving somewhere around 800 over the same open ground under the German guns as soon as they jump off. On there right flank will be most of our tanks at least 2 companies of them. They are to move along the extreme southern edge of the map and take the very southern objective. Once taken they are to turn north and come up behind the germans facing the middle and northern flank.

We are moving very well against the Germans today. North flank has moved to with in 350 yards of there objective. While the middle is within 300 yards of theres. The southern flank has around 200 yards to reach there objectives.

The Germans have put a mass of armor in the field against us today. I counted at least 125 tanks moving towards us at one time. Our gunners have taken out at least 35 of them with some of the best shooting I have ever seen. They sent at least 2 full companys of heavy armor against our tanks in the south. So far we have only lost 2 of our tanks to there onslaught. They are hitting us all along our lines with masses of armor.

So far our big guns have been able to keep most of there infantry dug in and behind there tank attack. Our infantry is moving slow at times but a constant movement forward. You can see a few squads of there infantry in front or alongside there armor but they have not been much of a problem to us today. If our men can hold out against this mass of steeel they have in the field this battle is ours and we will put one hell of a crimp in there plans here in Africa.

What a mess this battle field has become. Every where you look there is torn and ripped apart tanks. Crews of these tanks are stumbling and trying to run from the chaos. Our two companys of tanks we have on our southern flank are driving in and around these piles of scrap metal laying in all kinds of werid death patterns. They are hunting human men and cuttting them down unmercefully. Our gunners on the tank mgs are throwing out a steady stream of death and no one seen is escaping form this murderous fire. Out of the maybe 100 tanks that were so strong and menacing just a half an hour ago. They lie twisted and torn burning with a stange erie shape. I have only been able to maybe count 5 tanks still trying to fight in some small way.

All forward objectives have been taken and are firmly in our hands. Our troops have begun to move towards the rear one now. We have moved some 300 to 400 yards east and have like maybe 1200 yards to reach our rear objectives. Mainly tring to get all of the straglers back to there original platoons at the present. Not much in the way of opposition any more as the tanks have all but been destroyed. Still maintaining a good line as we advance. Morale is high and all the men are still very much gung ho and thankful for what damage we can do still to the bouche.

You can tell the powers what be there is no doubt this battle is ours and in a very British grand manner. Three cheers to our beloved England and to his Majasty the King.

We have almost eliminanated all the Germans today. There is not much opposing us right now. We are about 400 yards from capturing the rear objectives the only ones left for us to get. Our tanks in the south flank are going thru and killing any and all infantry they can find. Our line has moved already at least 600 yards east after capturing all the objectives they had.

Still taking a lot of shells from the German morters and 105s. They never seem to run out of ammo for some reason. While we on the other hand have been out for the last 20 minutes or so. Have lost at least 5 spatg from the unrelenting bombrdment of there guns.

Have located and eliminated at least three of there pesky 50 mm morters within the last few minutes. Im not sure but I think we have only lost maybe 3 of our tanks today. While we took out at least 75 of theres. Some of our tanks have over 50 kills to there credit, they really went to town on the German armor today racking up as high as 5 or more kills apiece.

Have beat the Germans and beat them badly. An hour and 40 minutes into the battle they have had enough and have retired from the battle field. Our boys were tough today and never gave an inch. Our tanks in the south rolled over the German armor like cutting thorough cheese. They took out 112 of the dreaded tanks of the most feared tank force in the world today. We lost only 14 of ours during one of the most brutal tank engagement I have ever seen. They were on our right flank in the deep south and after whipping there massive force they rolled ne taking out at least 28 of there 81 morters before taking and holding the rear most objectives. They were a force that I dont believe any enemy in the world could have stopped or even slowed in there push to victory.

Our boys on the front line never once slowed in there push against the enemy as well. They held there line and moved forward today. We were hit all day long with one hell of a barrage from there 81 morters and there 105mm guns. Not once during the battle did it slow or stop. But even with this terrific bombardment from hell our boys did not slack off or give ground but continued to push forward. I am so proud of these men there is nothing I can come up with that would express my feelings right now.

We have already recieved our orders and we are to move out as soon as we can. We are to move about 140 miles east of here and advance against the Italians at Bir Hacheim next month. I believe this is to try and give some relieve to Tobruk which is about 45 miles north of Hacheim. They are and have been surrounded and unable to get any supplies or relieve. We have no fear of going up against the Italians as every time we have met them we have beat them soundly.

Oh we also lost 157 of our brave men today but they took with them 1834 of the dam Bouche. They will be missed but I hear our replacements will meet us in Bir Hacheim.
