Just two things keep me from buying this game..need some perspective from other Civil War Buffs

Post by gwack »

I have been dropping by here reading the messages and am very close to giving FOF a try-except for two things. It appears the units are only identified in a generic way; such as the 20th Division, 47th Brigade. I have been playing a lot of AGEOD's ACW and really enjoy being able to view actual historical names..such as Hill's Corps, Heth's Division, Pettigrew's Brigade. You can also view individual listing of regiments and batteries, etc. The next issue is the map. It appears the FOF map has far fewer historical locations to fight detailed battles at..fighting the battle of Annapolis just doesn't have quite the right ring to it. It comes down to a worry about the lack of immersion in FOF. I would like to ask the owners of FOF, who love the lore and history of the Civil War, do these issues bother you to any serious degree? Or is it that once you get into FOF, these sort of things won't really be the lingering issue that they appear to be to someone who has not played the game? Also, can the game be easily modified to give historical name to units? From reading the threads here, it seems I may be missing out on a terrific game. I would like to give FOF a try-and would really appreciate some perspective from anyone who would care to take the time to give it.

The individual units are given the correct historical names not generic name. The units include the legendary units that fought on both sides and have special sub atributes according to the historically designated units.

Divisions, Corps and Armies also have the historiical names and the names may be changed to what ever the owning player wants the name to be.

There are plenty "Legendary Units". Besides that you can rename your brigades and divisions (corps, armies) as you see fit. I usually name my brigades after their homestate (1.Virgina, 2.Virgina etc.) and name the Divisions after the commander Ive assigned to that formation (i.e. Picketts Division).

Excellent news! I'd add that we have some enormous number of flags (700?) that you can assign to brigades, divisions, corps and armies, which also make for a more authentic feel.

From a programming point of view, it made far more sense to give new units generic numerical names and let players rename them, than it did to assign historical names to units that might have little or nothing in common with the original and then leave the player unable to make a modification.

And speaking of modifications, it's possible to mod the starting data file to give every unit there a historical name, so that every time you play you'll have the OOB's you prefer.

And just to add, alot (most??) of those legendary units as well as the generals in the game have a BIO written about them.

look for one of my AARs, it will show the units with some of the different flags

click on a unit, then click on the flag, it will open up a panel with new flags, find one you like and click on it

if I remember correctly, you can select a number of units, and then hit the F key and it should add that flag to all of the selected units

Okay, what you do for the flags is you click on your unit, then you left-click on the flag in the unit interface to change it. There are more unique flags for the south, but there are all the Corps flags for the north as well. I find it useful as the union to have the corps flags for your corps and using the state flags to make each brigade from a unique state which makes it historical like gwack was talking about.

I think I just posted as Hard Sarge did, so I'm sorry for being redundant.

okay, open a Container, click on a unit, when the unit info comes up, click on the Flag, it will bring up a new box of flags to pick from

now you can click on each unit in turn, or Ctrl click on each to select each one, once all are selected, hit the F key and the last flag picked will be assigned

this is a way to give Leaders a flag, click on the leader, and then ctrl click on a unit, hit the F key and both will get the flag

if you pick the leader by himself, you can't give him a flag

you can also do this from the Unit page, but for me, this is easier

or you can go to this page and click on the flag to make changes, or add upgrades or rename units (a pretty good page really)

only hassle with doing it this way, is you have to it one unit at a time, my way, lets you do the whole Div or Corps
