ASW and Radar Equipped DD's

Post by GreasyLake »

Just wondering if anyone knows if there is any advantage coded into the game for radar equipped DD's in hitting/spotting enemy subs as part of ASW TF.

I would rather save them for CV escort duties if not. I am assuming they can spot enemy aircraft and surface vessels at or near their stated ranges. Kinda chancey for spotting periscopes but I believe it did occur.

I have read accounts IRL where German subs were constantly harassed by radar equipped aircraft coming out of nowhere. Again not sure how the game is programmed.

Should be an advantage, but i've never read of anyone conducting a test... certainly radar equipped SUBS have an advantage in conducting attacks and avoiding escorts.

Don't know about the radar equipped escorts having an advantage.  I do know this though:

1) A/c equipped with surface search radar (PEN=0) have no special advantage to spotting and attacking subs.
2) Subs equipped with air search radar (PEN=500) have no special advantage avoiding a/c search and attacks.
3) Subs with surface search radar have an advantage in contacting passing TFs and attacking them.

I tested this about 2 months ago, ran about 40-50 turns of data and filed it away somewhere.

Interesting.

I did test subs with air search radars years ago, and they seemed to get only about 25% of hits that they got without air search radar. That is, number of attacks was about same, just that they were hit only 25% of time. Which would indicate that it gave some advantage avoiding being hit.

GreasyLake, I know this wasn't exactly what you were asking, but I thought I'd note this. Japanese Type 13 Radar was supposed to be fixed in 1.806.

Note that v1.8.0.6 incremental production release includes the following changes:

Item 3 – As an interim measure, until the scenario data can be updated, correct the Type 13 radar (device 139) to have penetration=500 thus enabling it to function as an air search radar.  This change will be removed once the scenario data is corrected.

But if you look in the dbase editor, it still shows Penetration = 0.
