Vista troubles

Post by Ghstbear »

Dear Larkin,

The Vista that I have on my computer doesn't seem to run the new version well(122b50). I tried running it with XP mode and it still did not work. I have confirmed that it is definitely something about the new version that it doesn't like. It will run on an XP computer fine, and Linix, though with some limitations. Using the 'alt' key has always been an issue with Tos in Linix.

Vista will run the Hq and Factory, but not Battle. It hangs up right before it finishes loading.

Just tested on vista and windows 7 without a problem. So it seems it is related to your computer.

This definatly NOT the same problem (uninst.wav is not loaded/used by battle module at all) and I can see no reason why this file can cause problems. Please explain.

Also, I should have noted here, the problem is no longer an issue. Larkin tried to duplicate it, but could not. In the middle of the endeavour I switched to Ubuntu. Now I am able to run it. A side point, I did notice that the Matrix Games intro never worked for me on Vista, but it would work fine on XP. It never effected startup, other than missing the display.

Haven't played for a long time, but saw some new campaigns and new patch.

Unfortunately both the Battle and HQ modules now crash. Before the patch (and tmerge) they worked on vista.

Here is copy of the vista error. LMK if I can provide any further details to help solve the issue.

Please check wether 122b57 makes a difference.

If not : At what point do they crash ? Factory module is working ? Vista 32 or 64 bit ? Can you test in Win XP compatibility mode ?

Hi Larkin,

This issue still exists with b57. The factory module does indeed work (tested most areas).

This is the error from the HQ module

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: tos_ws.exe
Application Version: 2.0.0.0
Application Timestamp: 4bf78d86

I'm using Vista 32bit. Win XP mode doesn't help. Its crashes during the loading of the module whilst the progress bar is flashing.

I will try a fresh installation patched. I also have another laptop which is not as old as this one, will try it on that.

Edit: Error from Battle module. Are these useful?

I googled and found this : http://forum.videohelp.com/threads/269739-Vista-DEP-Crash

Is it possible that you enabled DEP for all applications ? Please try the steps in the top post of the linked thread and add tos_ws.exe in step 7.

Hi Larkin,

Some progress. I did have dep turned on (for some other app needed it). The battle module still crashes but the error message has changed to one similar to the HQ crash message above.

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: tos_ws.exe
Application Version: 2.0.0.0
Application Timestamp: 4bf78d86
Fault Module Name: alleg44.dll
Fault Module Version: 4.4.1.0
Fault Module Timestamp: 4bf78a6b
Exception Code: c0000005
Exception Offset: 0006cd07

Locale ID: 3081
Additional Information 1: 01fa

Additional Information 3: dd05
Additional Information 4: de0b89494c4186eb840aa3a9d3cbb485

The better news is that I have installed it on another laptop and thats works. Now to try a fresh install on this laptop.

Edit: Can confirm that pre-patch the games works and then as above doesn;t even with a fresh install. Not sure what is wrong with this laptop. LMK if I can help further but no worries as have working on another.

The crashing module is the free video/sound library allegro. I updated from v4.0 to v4.4, find it very strange that battle/hq are crashing while tos_ws/factory are not. Do you have the latest video/sound/directx drivers on your laptop ? I'm a bit clueless because it runs fine on other platforms. Btw is the failing laptop dual core whereas the functioning one is single core ? We had problems with multi core CPUs.

I only add to this because it might help: My computer is single core when I was having problems in Vista.

Ok, so it is not core related.

You can check wether it is sound related by editing tcc.cfg in data/configs.

There is a section called [TOS_WS_GENERAL] where you can set

sound_at_all = no
music_at_all = no

Check if the game runs fine without sound.

Hi!
I'm posting here because I have this same problem as Ghostbear. I do NOT have the DEP thing enabled for all applications. But I did try this latest thing with sound at all =no and music at all =no and now the game runs ok.

Hmm, I thought I'd try and see if it was just one or the other of sound/music causing the vista crashes. I made a very interesting discovery.
I edited the tcc.cfg several times.
1) sound at all = no with music at all = no. Game works fine.
2) sound at all = no with music at all = yes. Game works fine.
3) sound at all = yes with music at all = no. Game works fine.
4) sound at all = yes with music at all = yes. Game crashes.

I would say the sound and music conflict with each other.

Good find. So there is an easy workaround to set music_at_all to no and play with sound but no music.

Bah, I take it back. It did crash with sound on, just not immediately on entering the battle module. It does work fine with both sound and music off, though.
