Can you research superlaser?

Post by Bateman1982 »

Hi all,
I bought the expansion yesterday and am really impressed with the improvements to the game. The policies screen allow you to really fine tune the parts you hand over to the AI, and the UI is much more fluid.

I was just wondering if anyone knew if its possible to research and build your own planet destroying weapons?

I had a look at the beam weapon tech tree but didn't spot any super laser type things.

I think there are two Techs that you cannot research (Super Laser is one), but you can find them in Ruins if you're lucky.

Kind of a bonus reason to scout early and often.

So certain high technologies that are known to have been researched and developed by a civilization can not be duplicated by other civilizations?

That's odd logic. I hate when games do this sort of thing.

Try comparing it to real life with like, nuclear weapons and power. cruise missiles, drones, robotics, computers, machines, etcetera.
Wish list:population centers beyond planetary(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Culture):Ships,Ring Orbitals,Sphere Orbitals,Ringworlds,Sphereworlds;ability to create & destroy planets,population centers,stars;AI competently using all advances & features.

In real life how many nations have those things? It is not that easy.

I've never found the super laser, though I've seen people report that they have. I usually find the death ray, the devestator pulse (aoe), and the titan shipyard tech. Though this game, I haven't found the shipyard tech. Hoping it's still out there.

The real idea here is to find and repair the world destoryer(s). There were two in my game that someone else beat me to, but they seem to have disappeared. I'm hoping they've been destroyed by the empires they were at war with, because I'm going to be attacking them really soon. :P

More than one independant nation has them. Any are free to research them...some may take quite a while.

I will change my verb before "logic" to "odd". I suppose since there is a certain time frame regarding the story then it could make a little sense with available technologies. I still prefer the approach of all technologies able to be researched by everyone.

The planet destroying Super Laser is the one item that cannot be researched or discovered on it's own. The Death Ray and the Devastator Pulse also cannot be researched, but they can be discovered.

The way to obtain the Super Laser is by repairing abandoned planet destroyer projects. It's built into the repaired planet destroyer for use as you see fit [:)]

If you want you can mod the races.txt file to give a race the Super Laser component, works in original DW or ROTS. The game will be pretty unbalanced if you do that, but it could be fun to set yourself up as a starting tech starting expansion empire against 19 level 7 tech old expansion AI empires and try to win by blowing up the rest of the galaxy.

OK, thanks for the responses all.
I now know how I can satisfy my planet destroying desires.
I wonder what a psychiatrist would make of this.

Great game - its fascinating to see how the galaxy develops in each case.
