Out of memory warning error

Post by olivier_slith »

When I tried to view air groups in carriers or passengers in transport ships, I have an out of memory warning error that pops up, preventing me to see what I want. I never had this problem with win95 or 98, but now I have XP. Any pointers on what I have to do in XP to make PW work?

Thanks

There's a pretty good website on how to make Pacific War work under XP at:
http://www.netikka.net/veli-matti.makela/PacXP.htm
However, because the author is in Finland, his setup is a bit different from the usual setup for computers running in the U.S.

The key thing to remember is that Windows XP is an evolution of NT rather than win 95. Therefore, DOS games are run in a "shell" of memory which is set up by custom CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files. So we'll need to create some of our own. Find the "AUTOEXEC.NT" file. Open it using Notepad or some other text editor, and REM out the lines:
lh %SystemRoot%\system32\redir
lh %SystemRoot%\system32\dosx

Save the file as "AUTOEXEC.PW". Now, find the "CONFIG.NT" file and create a copy as "CONFIG.PW". PacWar should not need the "DOSX.EXE" file to be loaded, since the game was written for real mode instead of protected mode. Select the "PAC.EXE" file and then click your right mouse button and select "PROPERTIES". Go to the program sheet. There select "ADVANCED". If you have not changed them already the two editable lines should read %SystemRoot%\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT and %SystemRoot%\SYSTEM32\CONFIG.NT. Change these to the "CONFIG.PW" and "AUTOEXEC.PW" files. Close the windows and you should be ready to go.
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

The XP fix worked a treat for me, thanks a lot, it's great to be able to run Pacwar again expecially as my ME versions of pacwar and wir have somehow changed to a black and white display.
