Titan Deisgn Concepts

Post by Korgmeister »

As you probably know by now, my favourite part of ToS is the factory. I love nothing more than creating an innovative design and then seeing it suceed on the battlefield.

My latest is something I created out of the twiin frustrations of useless rookie pilots, and the enemy turning my half decent pilots into sludge.

I call this titan and any derivatives 'Bait'.

Obviously your first step is to click 'Duralloy Armour' and then max out all locations. You'll need this, even though it's almost inevitable the bloody titan will lose it's head before anything else (stooopit armour limits and mandatory cockpit placement in head!)

From there it really depends on your preferences. I often give it a fairly advanced DCS because my Mechanic is usually the 'Bait'. Also it helps reduce the eventual pummeling it'll get. Give it a fairly good life support, too...because your pilot will get hurt, BADLY!

For weapons, weight is usually an issue, so I usually stick to close combat weapons. So far my 'Bait' titans are light titans (Yes, I am a cheapskate) so Power Axes and Machine Guns are usually the go. For a larger design, a Black Ray Gun would probably be a good idea.

Obviously the battle procedures are pretty simple. Get the bait to charge right into the fray and make himself the most obvious target. Usually the AI wll fall right for it, while you can get sniper titans armed with Plasma Guns and Large Lasers to blast them from a safe distance.

Of course, 'Bait' titans have a pretty crap survival rate, and their pilots even less so. That said, those pilots who surive a few matches of being the 'Bait' go up the ranks really quickly. Having the crap blasted out of you seems to make one rack up an ungodly amount of XP (mainly Piloting, of course).

I've got some other fun designs I'd like to talk about, but this one I'm particularly fond of...mainly because I like laughing at the sufferings of my 'Bait' pilot. Hahahaha! Stupid rookies! You die because you suck!

I've been fine tuning my designs on and off the battlefield, and the Bait MkIII series has proven to go above and beyond it's origional purpose to be a walking target for the enemy to shoot at.

In addition to being a walking slab of armour, it's also dealt no small amount of punishing blows on the battlefield and sent my rookie pilots up the ranks lickety split!

I'd love to be able to share this design with you, but I don't know any way to do so, other than transcribing the design specs manually (which is tiresome)

Anyone know how I can upload a 'Titan File' or something?

1. You can get a text file by entering the pinboard in the factory. Afterwards goto the data folder and check the chassis class subfolder for a file with the name of your titan.

2. You can add titans from other players by merging the database files with tmerge.exe. Carefully read tmerge.txt to get a clue.

mmm, that MG in the head could be a problem. i learned (both in words and first hand) what happens when you put something that takes ammo in the head... someone blows up/torches you/etc, your heat goes up, and Murphy's Law takes over. no more head.

Hmm, since my mechanic is the pilot that's rarely a problem.

However, you've got a good point, though. I'll see if I can reshuffle the placements into something less suicidal.

I think chainsaws are better and you don't need to worry about ammo explosions.
It's only a 1st variant so any comments are welcome.

And there is similary recon:

Pure CC titans with no battle computer are fine in duels, but in team play it can get complicated. Lock time goes up the roof.
There are similar designs to these in the database BTW.
MGs might carry the risk of ammo explosions, but they are vicious at point blank (double damage). Check out the Piranha design, it disables bodyparts with called shots in a flash.
Chainsaws are not necessarily better than Power Axes. PXs have a better weapon modifier, which makes them slightly better for called shots.

Yes, the Bait MkIII does bear a passing resemblance to the Axeman. However, the Axeman does not have the hugely paranoid levels of armour that BaitMkIII has. Remember, this titan is designed to be shot at alot.

Anyway, on Thogrim's advice, I made some revisions on MG positioning...then had an MG blow up and take my life support up in smoke. That sucked!

Here's my latest revision of the 'Bait' concept:

Titan Name: <Bait MkIII> (Light Close Combat Titan)
Chassis: Morola L3
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Weight: 70.0t (70t maximum) Height : 10 [meter]
Bmt : 20 (60 kph) Reduce Heat: -1.9C/sec.

Anyway, I've been trying some in-field testing on larger variants of the 'Bait' concept and in all honesty...it doesn't really work well at all.

A 'Bait MkIV' on a Heavy chassis was a total failure. It wasn't capable of keeping up with anything it was meant to attack. Heavy Titans are best kept for longer range work, IMO.

A Medium weight 'Bait MkIV' was a mild sucess. It didn't end up being better than the BaitMkIII, just different. It was more heavily armoured and had better systems and slightly better weaponry, but is less fast and maneuverable.

I'm going to see if it can be refined and improved with a bit more in-field testing. However, it will most likely be scrapped in favour of the cheaper, faster BaitMkIII

In case you want to try this mediocre first revision, here's the stat sheet:

Titan Name: <Bait MkIV> (Medium Close Combat Titan)
Chassis: Krios K-M2
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Weight: 100.0t (100t maximum) Height : 12 [meter]
Bmt : 26 (46 kph) Reduce Heat: -2.4C/sec.

In addition, one of my more sucessful designs has been the 'Skylancer' which is mainly a revision of the Penetrator - arguably my favourite of the default Titan designs.

Titan Name: <Skylancer> (Light Close Combat Titan)
Chassis: Morola L1

It's lightly armoured, so you'd be wise to keep your distance, or else dodge alot.

I've tried using the Icelord and while it's great if you want to get into the thick of it, it's lack of range means it sucks at sniper work. I usually have a couple of CC titans and a titan with energy weapons standing on a high location picking off the weak like a vulture.
(Hmm, that sounds like a cool name for a sniper, Heheheh)

Anyway, I've sucessfully revised the Bait MkIV into a much leaner, meaner design. Here 'tis submitted for your approval.
(I would consider it the highest compliment to hopefully see some of my designs make it into WS)

Another titan I have been trying is a design that works as a sniper. Black Ray guns are great when sniping as support to CC titans but they are so heavy! I tried to use a Heavy Frame so it could take the weight. However, my initial spec of 2 BRGs and 2 Large Lasers proved wildly overambitious.

I tried scaling down to a BRG and 3 Large Lasers, but likewise, it really wasn't possible to provide enough power and heat for that sort of weaponry!

Didn't stop me from field testing such a design (at great expense!) which needless to say was a great big walking white elephant. I won't subject you to the horrid design.

Working from that, I've pared it down to something more realistic, the first revision of the Gideon model.

Why did I call it the Gideon? Well, I'm reading the Book of Judges ATM.

So far it's proved moderately useful, but still needs some more field testing to iron out the bugs and Kaizen it a wee bit.

I think after this weekend I'll take a break from new model development. Field testing new models is a very expensive process...both in buying and maintaining new designs, as well as spending half a mil to bail out pilots that have kicked the bucket due to extremely poor designs.

Read the hq part of the manual and you will see.

You can create a special team setting the jocks starting dev points and the teams total money.

You should also check out the tos guide on the Vicious Byte website.

Going back to testing a design. I usually test a new design by using 2 AI teams. One team will have my new design. The other team will have a random design from the database. The team size is set to Duel. Faults with a design usually become clear rather quickly. But thats just an initial test. Eventually, you have to have other players try it out.

Hmm... Design might requre special tactics, which AI cannot use.

The AI seems to use all of my designs very efficiently. I even created some seriously flawed titans for some of the early campaign maps in Warring Suns and they proceeded to kick my butt.
I would have laughed if it hadn't been so painful.
