I need not much of a reason to post pictures from MWIF. This time I post it because I thought that one of the forum members here would appreciate the thrashing the German ships got in this battle.

Or maybe I just post this because I expected this to be a battle in the North Sea between Axis land based air and Brittish carriers in the North Sea or between the German fleet and unlucky CW convoys.

Anyway...

Early october 1939. German Fleet tries to break out into the Atlantic. The main CW fleet with 6 battleships and 3 carriers in the North Sea fails to find the German Fleet. Now only HMS Warspite is between the German fleet and the CW convoys in the Atlantic and she sails to intercept.

Here is a picture of the result of the first engagement in the Faraoes Gap and Warspite ponders on whether to press the attack or not.

I actually pressed on the attack just to see what would happen but both sides failed to find so Warspite aborted to port to repair the damage. So did the Germans with the tail between their legs.

There is a toggle switch which lets you see the section boxes for the units instead of the damage. That would be important knowledge for making the decision whether to stay or abort.

Here is a current screen shot for choosing naval combats. This shows the ability to resize the Select Naval Combat form horizontally to see more units (the defulat width to 1024 wide monitors stops after the Help button).

It also shows how the units look on the map (insert map in lower left hand corner) and on the Naval Review Details form. The latter gives you a better understanding of what the carrier air units are all about.

Note that there are many filters and check boxes on these forms. For instance, the NRD lets you change from the 'Nothing' setting for the lists of units to showing their status indicators (e.g., damaged, disorganized) and/or their section box.

Moving the cursor over a unit instantiates the UnitData panel for the form, as shown for the CA Chikuma.

Why do the Netherland ships have "NED" on them?

Not sure. In the ADG game the units have just Ne. But as the Dutch spell their country Nederland, I guess its not an issue.

We are using a standard 3 letter abbreviation on all units belonging to minor countries (that includes all Commonwealth members nations except the United Kingdom).

I forget precisely which abbreviation set we chose but it was one that is internationally accepted - it is not period WW II though.

having tried my hand at a 'vassal-y' type game with Jdenver and getting totally lost in the rules without ever having played the game - will the game on release assume you know the rules, or will the UI you stop you and say, unit cant go there, remember in mountains your range is blah blah blah?

I always say: WIF is easy to learn, but impossible to Master.

and yes the game will stop you making illegal moves

but for the learning of the game ... I would download the rules ... and start learning them now ..so you are ready for the game ..

There are 248 named 'countries' in MWIF. Section 11 (Appendices) of the Players Manual lists them all. Here is the first page.

Extraneous, why have you posted this? Are you concerned that with the current abbreviation in place i.e. NED, someone will look at De Ruyter's counter and think "my god this ship is a Nuclear Event Detector". or that Tromp has suffered Neuroendocrine Disruption? [;)]

Nederland is the Dutch name for the Netherlands and the short name for the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It is also the name of several villages:

Nederland, Overijssel, in Steenwijkerland, Netherlands
Nederland, Colorado, United States
Nederland, Texas, United States



I posted it because it seems odd to avoid an acronym found in an atlas for an obscure acronym. It is not a big deal to me if that’s the way you want to do it.


But you might note that I previously brought up my missgivings about acronyms for minor countries.
