Night time intercepts and engagements

Post by vonTirpitz »

Has anyone noticed any difference in intercepting or attacking differing night missions?

I've noticed in my current PBEM that, although my fighters generally always intercept night raids they have not yet actually engaged bombers performing aerial mining missions.

It isn't a huge issue for me because I know it is an average (xp 60s) fighter squadron flying day fighters and the incoming raids only have a handful of bombers. However, it has made me wonder if different missions affected the chances that fighters would actually attack the bombers.

Perhaps it does reduce the number of enemy mines that successfully get placed at the port but I have no good way of finding that information out at the moment.

Thanks in advance.

In classical WITP it was a well known bug that Allied aerial mining missions could not be intercepted by Japan. I had thought they had fixed it in AE but maybe it somehow got through.

This is one of the very few occasions that I suggest an issue be taken it to the Tech sub forum to allow michaelm to see if the fix was properly implemented in AE.

Yes, that interception does not work under latest official patch, but it was fixed in beta.

I've found that night time attacks by aircraft are amazingly ineffective at least in the early stages of the war. Do others see this as well and if so, does it get better with "age" (as the war progresses)? In early '42 is seems a waste of time... are there aircraft that are better suited for night time ops???

My limited experience in my PBEM game suggests that having more moonlight helps, as well as decent weather. Experienced bomber pilots flying at lower altitudes against targets that are well reconned can do some damage against airfields. You don't want to do this against fields with lots of AAA. As the allies, I used B25s/B26s for the nighttime ops and followed with 4E in daylight, with fighter cover.

Flying at higher altitudes or without moonlight is about as inaccurate as British terror bombing in Europe-except there they were more likely to hit something useful, as opposed to killing monkeys and knocking down trees in the jungle.
