In Saving Private Ryan, when Capt Miller reaches the town, and the AB Sarge is telling Miller what has happened he say, " They pounded the hell out of us with 88s."
Is he talking about 88mm FlaK guns, or JU-88 bombers. I just realized that I didn't know.

I would guess 88mm guns. I will have to watch the movie again, but I don't think the Germans had much luck getting close air support in Normandy.

Could be wrong, though...

Also, I don't think the Junkers were often refered to as "88's" as commonly as the gun was. So that also makes me think they were refering to the gun.

I always thought that too but the town looks like London after the Blitz, than just arty damage.
