Is anyone else a 'Warlorder'?

Post by SapperAstro_MatrixForum »

Just wondering if anyone used to love playing Warlords 1, 2 or 3? Or 4 if that is your kind of thing...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warlords_(game_series)

Infinite Interactive (the developers of the Warlords series, once part of SSG) are back and seem to be quite keen to make Warlords 5, and possibly a Warlords Battlecry 4 in time.

http://www.infinite-interactive.com/

Just thought I would throw this here in case there were any old Warlorders around these parts...

Thanks Sapper. I'd be interested. Not enough decent Fantasy wargames around.

Also thanks for posting about a game coming up...makes a change from all the non wargame related ramblings here. Sometimes wish wargames where discussed or possible wargames and wargame design etc rather than your favourite chocolate bar or whatever. Maybe then some bright game developer may see our ideas and wants and do something about it etc. I mentioned Streets of Stalingrad before and I feel many boardgames would be great for conversion yet when anything like this is mentioned it seems to barely get a response, ashame really.

Yes I'm in one of them moods. Yes I contribute to the rambling threads just ashame thats pretty much all that goes on here.

When my sons were 10 and 8 we became "Warlorders", hate to say it, but haven't thought of this series in a couple of years.

Quite normal Wodin.

Don't worry though, I am back for my nightly check in so expect an answer from me ;)

In any case, I would love a new Warlords game (hell, even a new Warlords Battlecry game would be nice...prefer TB warlords though).

A simple, elegant system and tonnes of fun when you can play a hotseat game too. The dev is looking in to funding arrangements at the moment; He would like kickstarter, but that is apparently for Americans only. I know there are a few other funding options similar to kickstarter, and I guess they are getting looked at too. In the meanwhile, he and his team will probably keep pumping out the ipad type games like Puzzle quest and so on to keep the money rolling in.

I played Warlords III, both Reign of Heroes and Dark Lords Rising, but more as war games than fantasy. The games had a strange appeal, and were the focus of my gaming back then. My son played Warlords Battlecry, but I never really got into it. Warlords IV was disappointingly bland. After that I lost interest.

I'd be mildly curious if they revived the Warlords series. (I'd be even more interested in a revived, updated Age of Wonders.)

Well if you look at the topic of the forum Wodin it's "General Discussion" not "Wargame discussion" or "Computer games discussion" like over at The Wargamer. So just about "any topic" is allowed on this particular forum except religion and politics and stuff an 8 year old shouldn't be reading about. [:D]

With that ^ said I'm an old Warlorder from the original Warlord where you heard the clomp clomp clomp of your units and the computer ai's units marching around. I'd have to say I'm a big fan of Warlords IV though since it has the toughest ai of them all. You have to build up a retinue to be able to play the advanced difficulties or it will wipe you out before you even get started.

Rtwfreak..I know that..just a shame when nothing other than the same threads are being responded too over and over again and yet any discussion about wargaming or wargames is few and far between.

As I said I'm in one of those moods:)...I think or I wish this place was a hive of game design ideas and requests and customer power, rather than lets rate these women, or what tune are you playing now..

I'm bored and abit miffed everytime I start checking out boardgames cos no PC game holds my interest and no current wargame grabs my attention I always come across games crying out for PC conversion. I'm probably going to save for GD'42 for instance as it supposed to be OK when played solo..however something like Streets of Stalingrad is one way to expensive and two probably needs an opponent.

What is the saddest thing is the quality of the maps and counter art in these boardgames is far superior than 99% of the PC wargames..which to me makes no sense whatsoever..it should be the other way around. We should have that art as well as FOW and even smoke\fire effects and sound effects (good ones pref background battle sounds) etc...PC wargaming should visually and obviously auditory far superior to the boardgames, not only that we can create proper FOW..have an AI and all the paper keeping and rule checking is done for us..

Lastly many of the best boardgames have more interesting\unique game mechanics than our PC wargames which all seemed to be stuck in the seventies design on wargaming. This shouldn't be he case. Someone mentioned why we haven't had a game yet that can create a the historical expample of small units holding back bigger units, yet with GD'42 this is what can and does happen. Or the waht it appears to be long Sequence of play for SoS which can seem complicated but makes the game unique and creates the city Stalingrad fight could much more easily be done with the PC which takes all the complication out of it. Not one PC wargame yet on a smaller scale can create city fighting well..not one...yet it has been accomplished in boardgames..really that logic should be the other way around..Take ASL that game is crying out for a PC conversion with all it's rules..and could even be expanded where we take into account individual soldier loss rather than abstract half squad to eliminated, using the PC power, esp in tactical games where I feel abstraction is less valid. Yet no one yet has created a tacticla game, the closest is HPS Squad Battles but even that has abstractions that take away from the game.

Not only is the power of a PC not used well enough in PC wargames..we aren't even creating the visuals nor the game mechanics of the great boardgames..

I'd just settle for a Steel Panthers remake with isometric playing pieces and an improved AI. To me Steel Panthers has it all or all that I want out of a wargame. Lots of different units to play with. Random maps and random campaigns and turn based. I have Panzer Command Osfront and Panzer Corps but they just don't do it for me like Steel Panthers. But, I do understand your point(s). Have you tried Decision Games? Art of War III? those types of games?

Seel Panthers is a PC remake that deserves a kickstarter..Mr Grigsby is happy making those bigger scale games that I have no real interest in..and seem o cause many an argument over at the forums. Coy level and below I'm happy with..I can picture 150 to 200 men better than a division of several thousand.

Shadow Magic is precisely the one I liked. It's a nice change of pace from intense war gaming to play a lighter fantasy-based game once in a while.

After being off the market for years, it recently was offered for sale again at GOG (Good Old Games, http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/age_of_wonders_shadow_magic.

I (re)purchased it pronto. I don't have any time to play it though. (And the pixelated, dated graphics are a turn-off.)

From time to time, I drop by the Age of Wonders Portal, Age of Wonders Heaven Forum (http://aow.heavengames.com/cgi-bin/forums/index.cgi) to follow progress of the long-promised "Unofficial Patch V1.5," but that shows signs of being mere vaporware.

No, what I'd really like to see is a new-and-improved official Age of Wonders from the developers, Triumph Studios. But TBS games are dead right now.

Anyway, hope springs eternal.

I never really could like AOW:SM or the series after the origional game. When they took out the ability to play with the wizard offboard it ruined a lot of the strategy elements and longevity of a game. It made it all too easy to just form alliances, march 1-3 stacks of your units to your allies capital doorsteps and then declare war and destroy it and its wizard and put it out of the game in one fell swoop. The AI rarely build 2ndary wizard towers thus making any level of difficulty of the AI a pushover.

In Warlords IV it was next to impossible to do anything like the above. You had to defeat the AI by attrition over time as the main HERO has Lots of hit points and could take out entire armies sometimes with the right retinue. Warlords IV after heavy patching became my favorite of them all. Though I actually liked the graphics of Warlords III terrain and units. The developers of AOW moved away from it for a reason and it doesn't look like they want to come back to it.
