Where's the Royal Navy?

Strategic War in Europe is a grand strategy game where you command one or more of the 25 countries in the game. War, diplomacy, technological progress, recruitment, conquest – this is all in your hands. There are no restrictions to the actions you can perform during your turn: unit movement, purchase, attack, technology investment, reinforcement, all of those can be done at any moment during the turn.

Where's the Royal Navy?

Post by SirJayLord »

At the start of the '39 Scenario the French have more Battleships than the UK. This makes no sense. At the start of the game the UK has:

Repulse 6/6
Hood 6/6
Q. Elizabeth 6/8
+9 Cruisers and 2 Carriers

The French Navy has:
Lorraine 8/8
Dunkerque 6/6
Strasbourg 6/6
Courbert 8/8
+2 Cruisers and 1 Carrier

At the beginning of WWII in the European Theater, Atlantic + the Med., the RN had 12 Battleships (all considerably better than Lorraine and Courbert), 3 Battlecruisers, 8 CAs plus at least a dozen CLs (RN had a total of 66 cruisers at the start of the war), and 4 Carriers (OK 3 + Eagle). The BBs were 5 QEs, 5 Revenges, and 2 Nelsons. The KGVs arrived during the war (most of them should be in the queue to be deployed during the game since they all were launched either before or within 6 months of the start of the war.

The French Navy had 5 BBs (all early dreadnaughts and very obsolete by '39) and 2 modern (if oddly designed) BCs (the above Dunkerque and Strasbourg) plus 7 CAs and the Carrier Bearn. Richelieu was commissioned in June 1940 and again should be in the queue to be deployed then.

Okay, if the BB units represent multiple ships, why are the sister ships Strasbourg and Dunkerque separate units? Where the hell are the Revenges and Nelsons. How the hell does the French Navy kick the Royal Navy's butt in Battleships and Battlecruisers?

You've made excellent points. I agree with you. Obvousily I have no answer for you. I'm just a no body player/gamer. But I figured it was simply a game balance, scope of the game, size of the game issue.

But, if we're wanting more British BBs, CVs, and BCs, shouldn't we also want more German BBs and BCs? Where's the Bismark? Prince Eugene? Graf Spee (sp? don't have a dictionary with me)?

Another thought ... ships are fairly inexpensive. If you choose to spend the production, you can build a fairly large navy by 1941 (if playing 39 game) but at the cost of land/air forces.

Actually, the entire naval aspect of the game is probably the game's weakest part. Don't misunderstand me. I enjoy the game and play it regularily. But wish the developer would spend a few extra minutes tightening up the naval aspect. Shouldn't take much work ... a few (don't want to turn it into Time fo Fury) more ships a the beginning of the game ... a few ships in the queue ... more hits during combat ... etc

This is why I didn't buy the game. It's a "dumb downed" version of the original . They would have done well porting this game to tablets but the maker of this game said it would be to much work to do so. While I did like the original version of this game it's to much " beer and pretzels" for me.

I just bought this. Is there an editor for it so one can add RN BB units?
Still playing PacWar (but no so much anymore)...
