Close Combat Gateway to Caen: one minute glimpse

Close Combat: Gateway to Caen is the latest release in the critically-acclaimed Close Combat series and focuses on the largest, concentrated British offensive since the Normandy landings in an attempt to penetrate the German lines west of Caen and cross the Odon River to get the stalled advance moving again.

Brilliant! Great job! Really looking forward to this now.

I like that the smoke takes time to clear, very very nice.
I have a Youtube Channel that features Close Combat and Panzer Corps Let's Plays and videos, as well as historical documentaries.

The tank explosion looks good. And it does seem the tank guns seem to track better.

That explosion looked AWESOME! Now if you could just do an overhaul of the graphics(like the soldiers, for example) you could still do 2D but just add effects like wind in trees and glimmering water in rivers and more photo-realistic maps and I'd be happy. It is 2014 and there is no reason why those soldier animations do not look photo-realistic. Hell, all you have to do is use photographs of actual people and tanks and just plant them in the game!

I don't see why there is any reason to use drawings when you can just take pictures of actual people and things. They were doing that with games in the 90s!

Thanks!

@Saturnian: Good feedback! The topics you're mentioning are on my list. Allthough with the current engine for Close Combat: Gateway to Caen it wouldn't be realistic to realize/introduce for example new soldier animations (from a game designer's perspective) There will be other features that are going to be very interesting.

With the upcoming new unity engine (Close Combat: The Bloody First) most of the mentioned subjects are more realistic to realize.

Cathartes, what I just saw seems like an impossibility in every release since CC5. An infantry unit brazenly and correctly following orders to run up to a tank to shoot a panzerfaust at it? That's great. I hope this means that there have been changes made to make infantry assaults as they should be (easy), and cancellations of orders (and "redeployment aborted by attack", "enemy spotted", etc.) less of a common occurrence.

The infantry assault is similar to what you see in Panthers in the Fog, but some minor tweaks were made. Basically, if German infantry teams have a panzerfaust, they will make every attempt to use it on a tank. The British infantry will need to rely more on friendly supporting tanks and PIATs. British infantry platoons have a PIAT team integrated into the platoon structure. If infantry have no AT weapons, they will need to rely on grenades to damage/immobilize a tank. If tanks venture forward without infantry support, they will fail to spot enemy infantry or anti-tank guns easily.

Cathartes, did you find a way to make the pzfaust fire only at vehicles and nothing else? if true, then, is it some tweak on the weapons file or some new code added?

PS. Looking good! estimated price?

pzfausts will primarily fire at vehicles, but you will sometimes see them fire at enemy infantry if no armor is around. Your soldiers don't think in terms of your big picture needs 100% of the time, they're trying to protect their lives too. [:)] On the flip side there are a few more pzfausts around.

Sorry, don't know what the price will be, that's a Slitherine/Matrix decision.
