Windows 8.1

Anyone manage to get this game working on Windows 8.1? I tried all the tricks possible - compatability mode, switches, various resolution. No luck.
I have a Windows 7 PC where I can get it to work. In Windows 8.1 I it loads but I get a flashing screen on the map.

This forum appears to be dead so I will answer my own question. After trying just about everything, including DXwind to attempt to force windowed mode and do some other tweaking, I gave up and added a virtual O/S. This appears to be the only solution noted in the companion Napoleon in Italy game as well (from a thread there were a user was trying to get it working in W8.1).

This was with the free VMware player software, with an old Windows XP I had laying around. Took a day to install it all, that's a lot of work to play this game, hope it's worth it, I'm still learning the game. But once installed it appears to work with no problems.

If anyone can figure out how to get this game to convert to windowed mode however, I think that may be the key to fix the graphical issues in 8.1.
