failure to create primary surface

I run all camp. series games fine on my older lenovo T series win 7 machine from my C: or External drives. BUT when I try it on my new win 7 X1 carbon lenovo, I get the 'failure to create primary surface' error for all front games. Didn't have to deal with this on my older machine. Weird.

I installed original from my disk, went and got the V2.01 – May 10, 2014 update.....nope.

Ran it as admin. etc. no love.

Any/all assistance appreciated....[&o]

It seems to be a problem with your graphics driver and/or your DirectX installation. Make sure you are fully patched, and up-to-date in both cases. Try Windows Update for starters.

Well, did that, dled dir X package for all previous V's, checked my chipset graphics drivers, tried again, same error message......I googled this topic and on this site there was another thread on this, but I cannot find it again, the poster seemed to have fixed it , said it was a driver issue but wasn't specific, I tried using the search feature here to find it again anyway but can't.

Maybe set the game's EXEs to XP compatibility mode? Or some other special config?

Right click on the EXEs in Windows Explorer. Select Properties > Compatibility. Try the Windows XP Compatibility mode. (And/or experiment with the other choices?)

I know that for me that has fixed a display issue with TOAW in the past.

well, I'm done for the day, at least....[:@][>:]spent approx. 6 hours trying to crack this issue.

I tried every combination of compatibility; 256 colors, run in 640, themes off on etc etc etc... with win 98, 2000, xp, win 7 etc etc etc.

I tried to use the fix I used when this happened to my HPS Waterloo install on this same machine, same issue, found a site from some guys that figured out it was an install/run as admin. issue, not to use the default folder etc., so I uninstalled and reinstalled Campaigns on both my C: drive and external, using all the combos I listed above re: compatibility...no dice.

Then again I was out larking around the web, one guy who sounded like he knew his biz. said the primary cause is that another program has a 'lock' or exclusive on some video feature, and until or unless that program is overridden or turned off, this game can't 'paint'.... then again, same error for Waterloo but I got it working....go figure....I'm to tired to be pissed....right now[8|]

I've got a vague memory that you get a similar kind of error message with missing bitmap files. So maybe it can be some sort of install issue. What's the directory you installed at. I've stayed out from the MS Prgoramme Files directories myself, always putting the \Matrix Games\ * somewhere else like on my D:\ drive. At the moment I am running from C:\Matrix Games\, as C:s my SSD drive. Helps really nice with the performance, given the number of files that come with all three games there...

Yes indeed, a missing graphics file will cause that error also. "Missing" in the sense that, for some reason, the program EXE is confused about finding it.

Maybe post log files here? (Bundled into one single .zip file, renamed as a .txt file to get around the posting restriction.)

I don't use program folders either, I learned my lesson with an install ( Waterloo) that had issues from HPS, re: for some Napoleonic games that I run. I create a folder inside another folder in my user folder. They run from both my C:/ drive and external.

I have a 4 year old thinkpad that runs the Campaign series great, from my ssd external drive, I run it on the X1 carbon and I get this error.

In your directory for the game, look for error.log, frontend.log, edit.log(for scneditor), edmap.log(mapedit), edorg.log(orgeditor), and engine.log. These will hopefully let on what the problem is.

I had this error at the tail end of the other error I posted. What I discovered was that somehow the game had deleted a great many of the .bmp files dealing with the Polish forces... I still have no idea how that happened, but luckily I have 2 installs on this computer, one for "tinkering" and play vs ai, and one for real play... so I grabbed the needed files from my other install and copied them in to "west front"(in my case) folder, and it runs fine now.

I am thinking that the messup in my case, had something to do with the mod program that is with the game.

Thx all, but, I have thrown in the towel. I just switched up computers I run this game on.

navwarcol- I too have 'spare' folders with complete installs so I can blow up a scn. file and just go grab another original.


On my Older T-300 series lenovo win 7 the game runs fine, on my new X1 Carbon Win 7 Lenovo, nope, I get this error. Heres the thing, I did a side by side sync between the 2 folders of both computer game folders and nothing is missing, same numbers of files, type etc. [:@]


A friend thinks its an internal video/graphics issue where in a prgm. has a 'hold' on some graphics set and unless I know exactly what it is, and command it to turn off and/or release its hold etc. it won't let that part of the graphics engine paint my screen for the game...... frankly I am just to tired of fighting it so I made the switch.

the Game Folder I use on my T-400 series lenovo ( said 300 series earlier thats incorrect, its a T-420)I had at work runs the updated 2.02 game fine, I try running the exact same folder on my "home" X-1 Carbon and I get the 'failure to create primary surface' error.

Nope, just that surface error.


Heres the thing, it works despite whatever we see in the logs on one win7 laptop but just won't work on the other Win7 laptop, ( Oh and it also works on my XP Tower gaming rig I keep offline).

I have to conclude, its the X1 laptop graphics video protocols. I just don't see 1 computer foregoing a line code error to go ahead and load and play, while another doesn't.

What I meant to say was: You (Crossroads) reported an issue with the infobox.bmp graphics file format in ME (the yet unreleased game). I am speculating that there is something different about that one file that carl11's system chokes on. It doesn't seem to be a file doesn't exist/file not found problem, if this is an exact mirror of his setup on the other system.

So maybe if carl11 runs a modified in some way infobox.bmp?
