Screen Scroll

Post by John S »

For an otherwise enjoyable and very playable game, I cannot say that I have ever encountered such a difficult
and awkward screen scroll. I have always taken a natural screen scroll for granted, no longer.

I started with the defaults and then tried to make some adjustments but it still slow and very unnatural.

I have a top of the line video card which plays, for example, the current Rome Total War with no issues whatsoever.

Do any of you have suggested settings that produce an easy to use, smooth screen scroll?

Can you explain more as to the problem you are having. I have no trouble with the screen scrolling. You can set it to be triggered by the edge of the map or the edge of your monitor. I have never had to adjust the scrolling parameters which you are able to do. Besides this you can right-click on the map and drag it around. So, we need a little more info as to the problem you are having.

John S,

You can do as Charles suggests and right click on an empty part of the map (no units or markers) and drag quickly). The edge scroll is slower and moves in a set amount of distance in the polling interval. Hence looking a little jerky in most cases. A super card is not really relevant since the underlying graphics engine is older to support older OS's. You can probably play Red Storm and Rome on different screens without a hit on a super card. As for setting numbers, I use 40 polling, 6 delay and 32 scroll increment. Try lowering all but delay in steps and see if that speeds things up. If you have a super high res screen you may want to increase the 4 boxes on top that set the active zone.

Thank you both for the advice. I discovered what I was doing wrong and have since corrected my mouse movement. In case it would help others, I found that I was pushing the mouse too far and too hard at the edges. I have since found that if I target roughly the very last hex on the map edge and stop there then I get a very smooth and controlled scroll.

I usually point at the small map and click the area I want to go. Very quick.
