Map pack is awesome but which counters?

Post by sirjolt »

The computer game and the physical maps are awesome. But which counter sets are being used, or would you need, if you wanted to play a physical copy of the game?

There's the inappropriately named "Final Edition" Classic with 1400 counters (from '96/'97). Also inappropriately named, the "Final Edition" Deluxe with 3400 counters (also '96/'97). Then there's the 2013 Deluxe release with almost 9000 counters.

To play physically what the computer game is emulating, what do I need?

Thanks!

It depends on the specific rule set you want. There are some units in the physical game (a-bombs, frogmen for instance) that aren't implemented. You should be able to use the physical maps. If you disable *all* the additional units, its MOSTLY equivelent to classic (the exception is MWIF always allows you to use CP points freely, and not lock you to five packs).

If you have the room to actually use the map packs, I'm really envious, I want to see photos of your setup :-)

I have the "Final Edition" Deluxe from '96/'97 which I got dirt cheap as it was used and missing the rulebook and scenario book. I've downloaded what I believe to be the correct rule and scenario book but I was wondering if the new map pack was compatible. In my copy of the game, America is represented by a tiny minimap and I wasn't sure if the counters I have would be usable in a map set where America is at full-blown size. And if they're not, which copy of the physical game should I try to get that's most compatible with the map pack?

yes the counters would be compatible with any map, no problem. there is rules language in the paper game to cover different map scales but you use the same counters, always. you could use the mini-map to save space, as it was intended. it is a pity that the new map pack was published as a bit of a surprise; what the product could really use is a more functional version of the mini-map; i.e. a specialized map to show America and the North Atlantic and the eastern Pacific, but on a bigger piece of paper than the original mini-map. you will just simply never use a whole lot of the paper in the map pack when playing Global War 39-45.

there have been a number of additional counter sheets published since 96 that you could add to those counters. Also there was an "update" kit published around 2004 that changed some counter values.

For a complete look at all the counter sheets ever published and their evolution, use this website:

sometimes a new copyright date on a countersheet changes only a few counter values and you can easily mod the counters yourself. other times you would probably want the newest counter sheet.

it is thought that a new edition of the game could be published this year but that remains to be seen.

oh, and sometimes now, the counter sheets are newer than the units in MWiF.

YOu could replace the America map pack and the mini map with the America in Flames map, which should be about half the size. The only issue is there's no marks where the map edges should be, i.e., which sea zones connect to which but it shouldn't be an issue. I'm sorely tempted to buy the map pack, bring it to WIFcon, and run through an entire DoD/WIF:FE Dexlue session :-)

Might be worth waiting until late summer, if plan on getting your hands on a game box. With the upcoming RAW8 there may be a new revision of counter sheets and possibly maps as well. Anyways, here is a link to the ADG Website to order the game.

p.s.: ordering from Oz is should be beneficial if your domestic currency is Euro or USD.

Picking up on the point above, does anyone know whether new counters are envisaged for RAW8? I assumed it would just be rule changes rather than counters and maps?

Many thanks.

KiF is the new counters AFAIK. New maps are under discussion, and IMO are likely to be offered. There is no absolute requirement to possess either, to be able to use the new RAW.

Thanks.

Would be great to get rid of those hideous maps [:)] Maybe replace with MWIF style, that would be good.
