Kharkov Disaster on the Donetzs

I have just purchased and installed this game and the expansion Across the Dniepr Second Edition. When I pressed play it required Directplay to be installed, which I did. Now when I press play the screen goes black for a few seconds and then reverts to the game menu without loading. I attach a dxdiag.txt file for information.

I would start a helpdesk ticket, probably get resolved faster.
