Now I'm getting this crash constantly.

Just to let you know I am running vanilla Distant Worlds and this happens all the time. In this particular game it happens everytime at the same time. I think I have captured it on a save file just a few minutes before it happens.

I don't know how to do all that ftp schitte so don't even expect me to do that. You made this game so you fix it. Don't expect me to do the work for you.

Just from seeing it so many times it appears it's happening when one of my explorer ships discovers something in each game and it's the same item because the same screen pops up.

When reporting a crash problem, it can also be very useful to provide us with a crash file.

Crash logs and save folders are not in the Documents folder.
They are in application data (which may require a folder option change to show "hidden files and folders".

Windows 7:

C:\Users\XXXXXX\AppData\Roaming\Code Force Limited\Distant Worlds\1.9.0.0

Replace the XXXXX with your username and the version with your version number.
