GeneralfeldmarschallWalterModel (USSR) vs Panzerjaeger Hortlund (Germany)

Post by GeneralfeldmarschallWalterModel »

1941-1945 basic game, no house rules.

Mild Blizzard and +1

I manage to break open most of the pockets, rail 3 good units to the Finnish Land Bridge and rail another 12+ high CV units towards Leningrad.

I disband 20 units total saving 30 pts for next turn. I plan on setting up 2 Fronts with the best infantry/morale ratings at the Army level
to defend Leningrad. Both Fronts will have the best fighter/bomber units. I sent all the level bombers into reserve and disbanded some
of the crappier fighter units.

Going with 2 sapper regiments, 4 artillery and 1 AT Regiment per Army to start.

Basic checker board across the Northern Front.

I plan on holding Leningrad.

The Germans really did not do very good at pocketing units. I rail out a bunch of good units and reopen almost every pocket. I then checker board the area. I plan on only check boarding the south for the first 4-5 turns seeing how good the Germans are at mobile tactics.

Not much happening turn 2 a few more Russian units get pocketed but nothing major and Poskv holds. I guess Germanys are headed for land bridge and Moscow? I reorganize the air force this turn and will start bombing withen a few turns

German player is going to be in for a rough ride. Getting behind the power curve + it is hard to make up for lost momentum. Not to mention the +1 Soviet attack, para drops and invasions. He is in for a very bumpy road indeed.

German player is going to be in for a rough ride.

To put it mildly...............

G can't win a game in the 1st couple of turns, but can go a long way towards losing it. A start like this shows a great lack of experience and spells doom against a more experienced opponent

If you can hold Leningrad that would be amazing. WIITE design and settings make the defense of Leningrad tremendously harder than historic.

Dou you expect / does it look to you that enemy is making early play for Krivoi Rog?

Where is the bulk of the german armor?

Looks like he is headed for Moscow and hooking north with panzers in south.

Yes from what I have read turns 1-4 are the ball game for Germany.

From what I have read I should be building allot of sappers.

So I have 2 per Army, 4 artillery units, 1 AT and 1 MG/AT.

Not sure that's the best mix, but what I have so far.

Like the Moscow early build up - in my game I didn't start fast enough and paid the price.

Is it just me, or did you save many more frontier units than typical?

If you look at his opening it was not that good and he has not pocketed anything but a few brigades, what units I did lose are coming back and digging near Moscow.

I been pulling back 3-4 hexes per turn so it hard to pocket much of anything.
