They're usually identified as Shokaku and Zuikaku

Yes, as do Shokaku and Zuikaku. I'm not very good with IJN ship recognitions

well or maybe I am too used to see Nimitz sized carriers...

EDIT: actually I looked again, and it is actually "tall", most likely it is Kaga

So comments on the video and my 'not great' japanese:

it sounded like Shokaku (or better to say Shokaku-class) and Zuiho were named as the carriers. As this is a press release, the videos could be from any time frame ... worse, I couldn't tell if this was an original press release or a composite of several releases that had re-released (i think the latter, but I'm not good enough to state that for sure). Anyway, still some very nice shots. I note the segment about the ship preparing for attack and the diligence of the damage crew teams preparations.

As for id-ing the cv's really tough as there is no knowing when the shots were taken, and they are bow on making it tough to see most of the discriminating signatures. Again, war time press release so that is expected. The fact that these shots could be from the '30's ... with all of the various upgrades done to all the CV's IJ had ... I can only go with what is said ... maybe some other sharper eyed person will be better ...

Well not sharper eye... but I checked wikipedia looking for pictures of Kaga and found this picture called Kaga and Zuikaku

Nearest one is definitely Kaga, with its characteristic huge forward hangar

Anyone notice how tiny that CVE looked about half way through? No wonder they carried no torpedoes, don't think a Kate could launch from one if it was torpedo armed.

I enjoyed the video(s) but have to say that I already know that ship's required chipping and painting in the 1940s and 50s and 60s and 70s (somehow I doubt that they no longer require such care but can't say from personal experience). I did notice that neither the carriers nor their aircraft seemed to benefit from any advance in electronic assistance during the video. Pretty sure that that cost them

I've read that the one on the left is Kaga. The structure on the deck is supposed to be the two level elevator in an upper position. Both the Kaga and Akagi had two level elevators to service a small lower hanger in the stern.
