Semi-OT: Why CVs were not the no-brainer choice in the 1920s and 1930s

Post by Lokasenna »

A discussion video by the Military History Visualized guy and somebody else, I think, on the evolution of naval thinking with regards to the inclusion of the aircraft carrier in the fleet.

Also worth watching just for the German accent.

I'm pretty sure it's IL-2, which is (sadly, even though it appears to be a solid game) the most recent air combat simulator available.

It is very mod-friendly, which probably explains its longevity.

Il 2 is probably the best.

Didn't know though that they could simulate even ships and naval attack.

The attacked ships though are not performing evasive manouvres.

Military History Visualized is great YouTube channel and the guy really knows his stuff. I think he was in Austrian army or something. Somebody should get him into WITP AE, he could be really interested in this kind of simulation and also help expand our community little bit more by doing some of his great videos on it...

No, there has been additional development
the video looks like it is from IL-2 1946, the oldest one of the franchise still playable.

afterwards they got:
- IL-2 Cliff of Dover --> still active and very competitive after modding (initial game was buggy)
- IL-2 Battle of Stalingrad, Moscow and Kuban --> the latest development, Kuban map is really pretty and it has decent naval bombing missions. They are using this Kuban map as a testbed for the next game which is in development "IL-2 Battle of Midway"

Their main competitor on the hardcore simulation market is "DCS", a game mostly focused on modern planes, however they have recently launched a Normandy 1944 map, which comes handy for their WW2 models available (P-51, Spitfire, BF-109K, FW-190)

"IL-2 Battle of Midway"?

Gee, that's what the Soviet activation gets you.

lol, no [:D]

IL-2 is now a very well known brand, so even when they released "Cliff of Dover" years ago, with 1940s British and German/ Italian planes, it was still called IL-2...

same will happen with Battle of Midway. As far as I know they will try to model 3 planes for each side (Zero, Kate, Val, Wildcat, Dauntless, don't know which TB they will model).

Seems all too plausible to me.
