[MOD] Conflict of Heroes ASL - Beyond Valor

This exciting new release is a faithful adaptation of the renowned Conflict of Heroes board game that won the Origins Historical Game of the Year, Charles Roberts Wargame of the Year and the James F. Dunnigan Design Elegance Award, as well as many others!

Designed and developed in cooperation with Uwe Eickert, the original designer of Conflict of Heroes, and Western Civlization Software, the award-winning computer wargame studio, no effort has been spared to bring the outstanding Conflict of Heroes gameplay to the computer. Conflict of Heroes includes an AI opponent as well as full multiplayer support with an integrated forum and game lobby. To remain true to the core gameplay of the board game, the PC version is designed to be fun, fast and easy to play, though hard to master. The game design is also historically accurate and teaches and rewards platoon and company-level combined arms tactics without overwhelming the player with rules.

[MOD] Conflict of Heroes ASL - Beyond Valor

Post by maitrebongo »

This mod allows to play on your computer the Beyond Valor Advanced Squad Leader Module using the engine of the game Conflict of Heroes Awakening the Bear.

The goal is of course not to replace Advanced Squad leader in our hearts (nothing will ever equal this wargaming monument).
This is a tribute and a fan Mod that allows the time of a game to immerse in the fabulous atmosphere of this boardgame.
It's sort of the way I found out my ASL boxes that took the dust off their shelves.
Consider that this mod is a kind of VASL with the ability to play against an artificial intelligence while using the rules of the Conflict of Heroes series.
The result of this alchemy allows you to have a good time by replaying situations that you have already experienced in ASL in a much simpler way, but the challenge of the ASL scenarios is still very good.

Given the limitations of the original program and the need to grope to find the way to integrate the new elements to the game: it is therefore a DIY.

Nevertheless, the result seems to me convincing (if one abstracts some elements of the user interface) and allows to play honorably against the artificial intelligence of the game.

You can download it HERE

Important note:

- This Mod can only be played with the Storm of Steel version of the installed game.
Indeed, the game is sold in the form of 3 modules: Awakening the Bear (original module), Storm of Steel (standalone suite) and Ghost Divisions (set of scenarios and maps for previous opus).
Although sold separately, these 3 versions are compatible and complementary to each other.

Due to a bug in the Awakening the Bear game, you can not select units in the Scenario Editor.
The Mods i create can only work with the installed Storrm of Steel version (alone or in addition to Awakening the Bear).
So you must have at least Storm of Steel installed on your computer.

Image

- This Mod can only be played with 2D counters and not with 3D units.
Redrawing the additional units in 3D would be too much work, and honestly, who wants to play this game with the ugly graphics that the 3D option offers?

A respectable wargame is played with hexes and counters. [;)]

Image

- Lots of data from the user interface cannot be modified.
Some elements could not be modified (The launching screens will always be those of Storm of Steel...). [:(]

How to install the Conflict of Heroes ASL Mod

Since nothing has really been planned to install Mods on this game, it will be necessary to manage by tinkering a little.

2 possible methods:

- Use the Generic Mod Enabler program to replace what needs to be in the original game directory.

- Make a copy of the installation folder and make the necessary changes in it (as if it were an entirely new game).
It is this solution that I recommend because it allows a better organization (especially with the other Mods that will come soon...).

Installation procedure

1- Make a copy of the folder where the game is installed, which is normally located in C:\Matrix Games.

2- Rename it (for example: Conflict of Heroes - ASL).
Now all the manipulations described here will be done in this folder in order to preserve the original one

Image

3- Create a shortcut to your desktop from the autorun.exe file (which is in this folder) ; that will allow you to launch the Mod later

Image

4- Go to the Data directory,
Delete all the contents of the SOS_Units and Units folders

Image

5- Go to the UnitDecals directory
Delete all the contents of the Chits and SOS_Chits folders

Image

6- Download the Conflict of Heroes ASL Mod file and unzip the archive.
You get a folder named Conflict of Heroes ASL MOD

7- Take all the folders contained in GAME and copy them in the directory Conflict of Heroes - ASL from your fresh copying game folder.
Accept replacing files as requested.

8- Take all the folders contained in MYDOCUMENTS and copy them in the directory MyDocuments\Western Civilization Software\Conflict of Heroes - Awakening the Bear.
Accept replacing files as requested.

Image

It is in this directory that extra maps and custom scenarios are stored.
As it is shared by all instances of the game (including those to come), be careful how you name the files you could creat and put it so that it does not turn into chaotic mess.

Order and method are required if you want to create maps and scenarios.

Recommended settings to take full advantage of this Mod:

Image

Some other important remarks:

- You should never try to start a game with one of the original scenarios of the game (since the corresponding units no longer exist: this would cause a crash)

You must use the Additional Firefights menu to start a game

Image

- For the same reasons, do not try to play with 3D units (crash guaranteed)

- For the moment, the Mod is on beta testing phase and contains only one test scenario : ASL 0127 Land Leviathans.
I would expand it with new scenarios.
Later, other ASL modules will be released.
A tutorial for the creation of boards and scenarios will also be put online so that players who wish can add the scenarios of their choice to this project. [:)]

In what ways does this mod change CoH to be more like ASL? [:)]

New boards (ASL design),
New units with CoH chits design (CoH chits design is much pretty than original ASL chits design),
NEW ASL scenarios.

Thanks, Maitrebongo, for making this available to the forum.

The CoH chits are extremely attractive (I play the board game version too), but I still like the original Squad Leader (I still play the board game of this too) and ASL chits as well. [:)]

It's an idea... Later, i could make ASL chits for the CoH ASL Mod, but with better graphics quality than the originals.

Let me know what style you prefer (even if it is the original CoH style),

In my opinion, The "Critical Hit" style is the best one...

Wow! How to choose, they are all so good. Your counters are brilliant! [&o] [&o][&o]

As a big fan of ASL, I would have to opt for the 'Avalon Hill' style, but having said that, the 'Critical Hit' counters are also superb.

I really like the counters in the final picture. I’m not really sure which is critical hit and which is Avalon Hill styles. I’m not big on the counters with the “schematic” drawing type markers in the top few pictures.

I like the AH line drawing for vehicles, as the details don't get muddled. CH is good for the infantry. Whatever you choose will be wonderful, though! Your work is phenomenal.

Wow fantastic work all around, thank you for the effort.

I really like the "Avalon Hill" style black outline non-colored style the best. I especially like the way the infantry looks. That style is very old school and has a great feel when viewed against the ASL boards.

Well,

I'm back after a few weeks of intensive work in real life ...

It allowed me to take the time to think about the best way to approach a successful port of Advanced Squad leader in the simple and elegant game system of Conflict of Heroes.

It appears that it will not be possible to keep the modules as in ASL for the simple reason that the order of battle of some modules (Beyond Valors, for example) contain more than a hundred units per nation then that the scenario editor of CoH can only display 69 at best for the Axis player (and only if your screen allows a display of 1080 pixels high).

Image

This is a constraint that will have to be taken into account when cutting modules.

After careful consideration, I have arrived at an organization by period, rather than by nation, which will allow a complete and exhaustive coverage as in ASL :

Module # 1 First Blitzkrieg
: Poland, Benelux, France, possibly Norway and why not Yugoslavia and Greece.

Module # 2 East Front 1941-1942: Operation Barbarossa from the beginning until after the battle of Moscow.

Module # 3 East Front 1942-1945
: The rest of the Eastern Front until the fall of Germany.

Module # 4 The Pacific: All US and Japanese orders of battle should fit into one module. An additional module can be created for fighting with the English (Burma, etc.).

Module # 5 Afrika Korps: German and Italian on one side and English and American on the other for fighting in the desert.

Module # 6 West Front 1943-1945: Campaign of Italy, landing in France and invasion of Germany.

Module # 7: Korean War and Indochina.

Module # 8: Vietnam.

Module # 9: Cold War, Battle in Germany in the 80s.

That will be almost 10 modules, so 10 copies of the installation of the original game which will be too much disk space. Don't panic, I will propose two different methods that can seriously reduce the size of the files copied for an overall result of approximately 6 gigabytes. For a game system as complete, it should not be too much ...

Currently, I am finalizing modules # 2 and # 3 (The Eastern Front) and I have already started module # 1 (First BlitzKrieg)

For example, all the units present in modules # 2 and # 3

Hi,

To give you a taste of what will be available in the coming days, here is the Firefights Book of the first ASL Mod to be posted.

The ASL - East Front 1941-1942 Mod will contain all the scenarios of the ASL module "Beyond Valors" corresponding to the beginning of the operation "Barbarossa" until the battle of Moscow.
