Adventures in Russia

Post by larryfulkerson »

This will be my third restart in as many months. I'll be using 4.1.0.23 and the scenario
version is 4.5 and I want to skip getting Leningrad and just drive on Moscow using AGN
and AGC and use AGS for the deep south. I'll be going for the objectives instead of
just trying to kill Soviets. I want to do something different this time. I want to use
the new no stacking rule for the Axis minors and see if it's possible to play that way.

Sorry to see the last one end, I was looking forward to what mud might do. Good luck with this one. It does seem tough to match the Germans on an historical level!

I railed OKH to Koningberg so as to be present when the tired planes get parked there
for rest and refit. Maybe he will accellerate the process a bit.

I'm looking for good places to drop some paratroops that will hinder the retreat of the
Soviets and block their probable retreat path so I can catch up with them and kill them.
I've identified two high value roads that the Soviets will probably use that have
bridges over rivers and I can drop those bridges to stop the flow of traffic a little
bit.

Most of the aircraft will be doing airfield strikes until all the Soviet planes I can
reach are gone. Then I'll see if I can't drop some bridges in his far backfield, make
'em hard to repair, and also redirect all the traffic to take the scenic route.

I want the RR engineers to build four routes in all. One going to Riga for now. One
heading to Minsk, one headed to Kiev, and one from Bessarabia to Odessa. I'll figure
out which routes to weight heavily and which ones that can use a single RR unit. And
this time I want a route to go from north to south and vice versa without going on the
scenic route.

I've been playing reckless in the past and this time I want to be more careful and just
for grins I think I'll use the red green yellow rule where red units can't move or shoot
and yellow units can move but not shoot and green units can move and shoot. I tried it
on the Sicily to Brenner's Pass scenario and it seemed doable.

We'll see how I do this time.

I'll cover the mud period in detail for you. And about matching the Germans on a historical basis
I've given up trying to match the real life achievements of the Germans because it tends to make
me rush and get reckless and both of those things are bad for game play. I like this subject, and
this time period and this scenario is the best of the bunch so far. FITE2 is better for PBEM though.

Larry,

Good luck. This scenario is too big for me, but I will enjoy watching your approach.

I'm doing it again. I've let my recon boys get out ahead of the pack, way out in
front. I'm trying to get on the north side of the Scviet units so I can cut off their
retreat. I'm hoping to be able to get some main body units to it's position without
much trouble.

Hey there Mike. Good to see you posting again. Thanks a lot for the good luck, I'll
try to make it happen. If you think D21 is too big you ought to see FITE2. It's at
least twice as big again. My computer struggles to hold it all. And about my
approach...I'll try to cover a lot of my approach to give you a better idea what I'm
thinking as I do it. You can lend me all the advice you have, I think it'll help.

I had the infantry clear a hole in the Soviet lines and then poured 4 Panzer divisions
through it into the Soviet backfield to his second MLR and I plan on getting in behind
his defenders and put them in one or more pockets. The infantry babysit and the Panzers
zoom off for further adventures.

I'll be going for the objectives instead of
just trying to kill Soviets.

From my exp. with eastern Front games (and wargames for that matter) taking ground is a resultof unit kills. Maybe TOAW is different, I am only a lurker here.

So many great aars here!

Here's the turn one round one scheduled attacks. Note the large number of airfield
attacks scheduled. I've ganged up on the enemy airfields to ensure the destruction
of the Soviet unit so this may take more than one round to get rid of the Soviet
planes. I'm guessing three rounds before I can get all I can reach. This first
strike, I had to move a Stuka squadron because their range is only 21 hexes and he
couldn't reach any Soviet planes from where he was parked. A lot of these attacks
are on fortified positions, positions that may take more than one attack to take down.

You're right. Now way to gain enemy ground without attacking and killing something I guess.
And thanks for posting. Lurkers are welcome. But if you've posted something haven't you
graducated from lurker to poster? I think so. Congratulations.

Okie Dokie: I went through the entire OOB moving everybody and now I'm ready to pull
the trigger and watch the fireworks. I notice that I've got two losses from the
interturn furballs I guess. So I'll know to subtract two from how many are lost
after the strikes are over.

I just now did a save game and zipped up the file and attached it here so you guys can
watch the combat phase for yourselves with the airfield strikes and everything. This
file has my turn one round one setup, where I have moved units to and what they are
attacking, what dot-setting each of them has, everything you could want to know about
how I get set up for the round one attacks. Just a thought. Just end the turn to watch
the attacks.

EDIT: I just had a thought. If I ever restart for any reason, I can use this file and
get started quicker.

Here's the results of the attacks. I got 100% on 8 of the airfield strikes I launched
so I figure there's 8 less Soviet aircraft units now. More to go.

Here's the aircraft losses. But we already had two Me-109 losses before the strikes
so according to the losses meter we suffered no losses whatso ever. I'm sure there
were some that were damaged but I forgot to check the on-hand numbers before we started
so I have no idea how many.

There's an argument fomenting in the community about the deployment of the aircraft
that the Axis can use for AFTER the initial strikes are over, because the first
concentration of the planes should be the Soviet planes of course. But AFTER the
strikes the combination of CS and INT is being debated. What's the proper mission
for the early game war period? I like a lot of INT to keep the Soviets from getting
away and that the heafty shock bonus the Axis enjoys is a sort of built-in CS mission.
Your mileage may very.

Here's some of the losses so far. I using the HRS row as my trigger for how the
ground war seems to be going. I've got 35K assigned and a lot on hand so far so good.
I'd like to keep the minimum at about 35K or so and regulate it by the operational
tempo. It seems to be something I know how to do easy enough.

I did a save game and did an end-turn and then stopped the processing of the Soviet
side just so I could get a peek at the losses after just that one round of combat
( plus the interturn furballs of course ). Their losses were pretty heavy I'm
thinking. So round two will add some to the losses columns for most of them.

Two of the yellow planes were Finn so I moved them down to near Helsinki and put them
on rest and then moved the Mannerheim HQ unit up adjacent to them to help them refit
but that exposed the port so I'm going to move one of the Finn ship units there for
now and see if I can't find a ground unit to park there.

I had forgotten about the exclusion zone that prevents ships from sailing to Helsinki
so I'll just bombard Hanko instead. Meanwhile I need to find somebody to rail themselves
to Helsinki. Most of the Finns are still in garrison mode until T6 or so, so it's got
to be one of the Brandenberger paratroops. I hope they enjoy their vacation in
Helsinki. I'll move them out of course when I can get a Finn in there.
