War in the East - New Open Beta v1.12.07 (March 5 2024)

Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: The German-Soviet War 1941-1945 is a turn-based World War II strategy game stretching across the entire Eastern Front. Gamers can engage in an epic campaign, including division-sized battles with realistic and historical terrain, weather, orders of battle, logistics and combat results.

The critically and fan-acclaimed Eastern Front mega-game Gary Grigsby’s War in the East just got bigger and better with Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: Don to the Danube! This expansion to the award-winning War in the East comes with a wide array of later war scenarios ranging from short but intense 6 turn bouts like the Battle for Kharkov (1942) to immense 37-turn engagements taking place across multiple nations like Drama on the Danube (Summer 1944 – Spring 1945).

War in the East - New Open Beta v1.12.07 (March 5 2024)

Post by AlbertoC »

Hi all, we are releasing a new open beta for War in the East. You will be able to download the patch directly from the My Page section of the Matrix Games site or directly form this link HERE

If you prefer to use Steam, then you will need to opt into the changes by selecting the beta branch from the games Properties menu, listed as "beta - Public Beta". You can opt out at any time.

If you prefer GOG, you can switch to it by going to your gane in your GOG Library, selecting it, then clicking on the button next to "Play" that looks like two horizontal lines with small offset circles, choosing Manage Installation -> Configure then picking the latest Beta from the Beta channels drop-down list and allowing GOG to update.

You can find the full changelog down below. Your feedback is essential to improving the game, so we're deeply grateful to everyone testing the update and offering us their opinion.

v1.12.07 – March 5, 2024
IMPORTANT NOTE:All save game and scenario files created with this or later versions may only be loaded with this or a later version. Versions prior to 1.12.07 may not load these newer save game or scenario files. Old saves and scenarios may be loaded with this and newer versions.

Bug fixes
- Fixed a bug where moving a unit lacking enough fuel to move, but having the MP to do so, would result in almost fully refueling it.

v1.12.06 - 17th November 2020:

New features
- New method of loading and saving the game in smaller blocks, reducing chances of out of memory errors (courtesy of Pavel Zagzin).
- Reverted to the old method of calculating movement reduction of motorized units due to fuel shortages, based on needs rather than actual use of elements and vehicles present in the unit.
- Retreat hexes will now be sorted when selecting the best one in the same way as displacement hexes. Units will still try to retreat as little as possible, but their target will change. Hopefully less units will retreat towards the enemy.
- AA strength increased by 33%.
- Parts of Finland captured by the Soviets will remain Soviet after Finland will surrender, so that Soviet units in Finland will not be destroyed.

Bug fixes
- Fixed a bug where construction units could deploy to repair isolated hexes.
- Fixed multiple bugs related to provision of HQ Support.
- Fixed a bug where intercept flights were not calling base resupply routines, which caused low numbers of fighters flying those missions.
- Fixed a bug where routed or isolated units were deprived of SMP at start of turn, but remained loaded. They will be now automatically unloaded.
- Fixed a bug where in supply units that were surrounded during enemy turn could not make a displacement move through enemy controlled hexes.

Excellent news. Thanks for the hard work! I was actually just about to post a thread about AA ineffectiveness.

Can more detail be provided on bug fix #2 "Fixed multiple bugs related to provision of HQ Support"?

Edit: for Steam users, it's the normal beta branch update method. I looked for 10 minutes on "my page" before realizing this.

It seems that this update causes serious performance problems. I need to save and restart the game multiple times during a turn because of lag. Without restarting the game becomes unplayable. I have never had this problem before.

Great news! Definitely addresses some of the most significant issues around the interception bugs and ineffectiveness of AA.

Any insight on future updates?

Does anyone else suddenly have performance problems? I tried on multiple PCs and even reinstalled the game but I get serious lag during each turn. It doesn't prevent me from playing the game but it's really annoying to have to save and restart three or four times during each turn.

Looks like my problem is caused by the video folder. Renaming the folder seems to fix the lag problem. [&:]

Has your machine had a recent upgrade? Sound like a video codec problem to me. Have you tried playing the viseos outside of the game to see what happens?

Looks like Steam downloaded all game files. I bet that was causing the problem. Would explain why it happened on three different PCs.

You play on Steam, that explains it all.

If I go to My Page all I get is I don't own any games. Can't find anything else. Now What? And yes, I did by my game through Matrix and not some bootleg.

After a few hours with this patch, it seems that there is something to do with air interception. Recon can take quite a while to push through, and I noticed on a few battles the land elements showed up on the battle screen immediately, then the game hanged while air allocations were being matched up.

Retreat rules need an additional tweak:

Fortified zones should be treated like HQs instead of combat units for retreat path purposes.
A unit shouldn't retreat into a different hex when an adjacent FZ is available and 'naked'.
Current result of combat unit treatment means units falling back avoid the FZ.
