[Logged] MAD Radars not detecting

Post by Redmoose »

I have found that MAD radars do not detect submarines or mines. This is on build 1147.20.

Thanks,

RE: MAD Radars not detecting

"During World War II, fifteen British Vickers Wellington bombers were modified to carry a large magnetic induction loop and an electrical generator. The 'Directional Wireless Installation' (DWI), a cover story for the true purpose of the magnetic loop, was used successfully on May 10, 1940 to sweep a path for the escape of the Dutch Royal Family to the UK. The DWI was used most successfully in the Mediterranean theatre, particularly over the Suez Canal and Alexandria Harbour. Their use revealed the limitations of the technique, in that it only works effectively in very shallow water (such as canals and harbours)."

Example of some MAD use against mines. (Just added this because I am not sure if MAD is actually suppose to detect mines in CMO)

Thanks,

Hi Redmoose

The DWI was an attempt to sweep magnetic mines by detonating them with an artificially created magnetic field from a Wellington.
It was never intended to detect anything, just triggering any mines close to the plane. It didn´t work very well.

I highly doubt that MAD will be able to detect mines IRL as the magnetic field from many hundreds, or even a few thousand, tons of steel from a submarine are many orders of magnitudes larger than from a mine.

MAD effectivenes was tweaked a few years ago to better reflect real life performance.
Try reading this thread. I think it explains why you don´t detect subs.

Hope this helped.

Thanks for the response. In the scenario I attached how come even when within 1nm it still did not detect? The submarine was not even deep at this point, it just was not detected at all by MAD.

"The MAD gear is sensitive to about to 1200 feet depth; considering you are at 200 feet, you can detect a sub at aproximately 1,000 depth below the water."

Within 1nm is a lot more than 1400 to 1500 ft. discussed the MAD thread Did you read the thread that was posted?

Hi Redmoose,

As the posters above suggest MAD is not intended to detect mines. It works best with big (very, very big compared to mine) objects in deep water. Small objects like mines in shallow water get lost in the background clutter of shallow water magnetic signatures--wrecks, rocks, pirate treasure, shopping carts...

Magnetic influence devices are modeled in Command for mine clearing, however as in real life they do not detect mines.
