Why I am forced to this build order at the start of the game?

Post by Novaliz »

Why do I have to start every game with the same building queue? There are many times I do not need a construction ship first?! Ok, I can destroy it but thats feels not right in my opinion?

Agreed.

It is kind of terrible, because there are some starts where neither the first exploration ship nor construction ship will have done anything useful by the time skip drives are researched and the second one will beat them to the same task.

There are a lot of settings for the game, and if you want non-FTL engines to have any effect you have to slow down research. But that would be a slow pain for me, in the end it is up to the player. It would be very hard for a small team of developers to cover every setting to have a perfectly balanced start. Some has to be up to the player, knowing what they are getting in to when choosing the game setting.

?

I'm referring to starts where you don't have something to survey close enough, on tech settings.

In DW:U on default tech settings, prewarp gave you enough time to do something useful in your starting system on the default settings.

In DW2, frequently I cancel the explorers orders and build a spaceport and move it to the top of the queue. By the time the explorer is halfway to where it is going, it will be coming back for refit anyway.

You could just not research the skip drive right away? Focus on other things.

I was reffering to;

"there are some starts where neither the first exploration ship nor construction ship will have done anything useful by the time skip drives are researched and the second one will beat them to the same task."

If you want that time with pre-FTL drives to matter, you can slow down research speed in settings so there is more time spent there.

Lately I've been starting with shields, armour and research tech then skip drive....GP

I find the first view seconds in DW2 pretty annyoing in general.

Slow Zoom to my Homeworld,
I get the Introduction Text, which is nice.
The Game unpauses unpromptet and I get spammed with messages about

scientific finds on my Homeworld,
characters appearing,
multiple messages about finished ships, which I did not Order,
maybe even first contact with pirates or an independent colony

while the clock ticks in the background and I am losing valuable research time,
when all I wanted to do was to take a good look at my Home System before I decide to do anything at all ..

not cool.
but simple solution. DO NOT UNPAUSE THE GAME. after the the introduction is removed.

Yeah prewarp is a bit odd given that skip drives are there right at the start to quickly research instead of having to wait for a slow scout to find the tech at the edge of the system and take ages to research so you usually had a good base of development before you did your first warp ships.

So at the moment I cancel all construction then drop a small space port and fast track skip drives.

I have gotten into the habit of double tapping the pause button at the beginning of each game....GP

In DW1 there was a game option to pause the game when loaded. Is DW2 the same?

This never worked when starting a game so I always saved during the race intro screen, quit and reloaded so maybe DW2 is the same.

The game starts paused but when you close the first homeworld screen it starts the clock. So I double tap the pause button and then close the opening screen. The first "homeworld" screen is the one that talks about discoveries on your home planet....GP
