[1.0.2.1]Not enough Ion Protection
I have another game, where the Autodesigner forgot to install enough Ion Protection on half the ships and stations.
Now a lot of them are "just" inefficient.
They have a Ion Shield. But they are civil ships not expected to take fire - so the Armor would have done.
They also had a 2nd-5th Defense Slot to put Ion Sheath Armor in, but choose not to.
Thus they are wasting power and Space on a Ion Shield Component (and Shields 2 through 4), when they could have spend one slot ion Ion Sheath Armor and no downside to their primary function.
Small Freighter:
Actually lacks the slot for the Ion Armor and Shield.
But at least he got the Ion Shield
Medium Freighgter:
The "usual" except he went for 2 Shields instead of Armor+Shield. But at least it got a Ion Shield
Mining Ship:
Like Medium Freighter
Construction Ship:
No Proteciton. In fact, it made me aware of the issue
It could have skipped the 2nd Shield, used Ion Armor, or even just forgone Repair Bots.
Each of those would have left plenty space for Ion Protection
Exploration Ship:
Actually doing everything right, given it has to expect taking Ion Weapons Fire
Bomber:
Does not use 2nd Defense slot for Armor at all
Small Space Port:
Perhaps the worst of them all.
Apparently hitting 270/270 Crew resulted in it completely forgoing the Ion Shields. Despite it having Space and Power for the shield and crew to run it.
Or even the Ion Armor for one of hte 6 used defesnes slots.
Also it skipped the 2nd Construciton yard, which is half the reason to get that size.
Research Station:
Like Construction Ship
Monitorng Station:
Like Construction Ship
Resort Base:
While it ran ouf of slots, it also pulled a constructor.
Interceptor:
Like Light Freighter, no slot to use
Passenger Ship:
Like Medium freighter
Conclusion:
I still think there should be a dedicated Ion Protection Slot.
Or at least the Ion Protection part of the Ion Sheath Armor should become a passive bonus (but you then might have to lower the Ion Shields proteciton rating if it adds).

In my game, it's a big issue: I've colonized 2 independent worlds inside green (grav) nebulae using manuelly updated colonizers (with Ion Shield). Well, now none of my other ships can enter those areas, civilian freighters get stuck etc. None of the auto-designs include Ion Shields and if I update the manually, they simple get remove on next auto-update.
I wish there were a policy making the auto-designer put an Ion Shields on each ship. In long term, a kind of configurable template per ship type would be amazing.

I agree it's an issue, I have manually updated my entire ship roster to have either the ion shield or ion armour and they all seem to work fine except the interceptors which have no slots for the shield and only 1 armour/shield slot, so now the interceptors just blow up constantly when used in said system.

Or most likely simply avoid using the damned auto entirely. You might only update ships occasionally, but they be right.

It may be worth while, in the short term, to quickly mod armor to provide ion protection all the way through the armor tree. Just give specific ion armor even more ion protection. This will hurt ion weapons to some degree I expect, but, it might be worth the trade-off of potentially nuking an AI Empire that gets stuck with its entire civilian fleet stuck in a nebulae?
I wonder what the base ion protection to prevent ships from getting outright nuked by green ion storms would be? I know ion shields basically prevent it, but do we think it's 20 (I think that's the value Ion shields give) or would a lower value work?

Gravitic 8 Ion Damage
Even the T1 Ion Weapon does 9 Physical and 18 Ion Damage. T2 is 10/24.
That is why the Ion Sheath armor at 10 Ion Protection is entirely enough for ships not expected to take fire.
Yet it is not a huge hinderance against Weapons fire.

even inside the carrier and the carrier has the ION Shield and 8x that 8 ion defense armor installed ...
now found a super armor with 10 but already near finished to research that armor with 14 ion defense
SO 8 is not enough , apart that all shields are down and could not be charged, when they are built inside the nebula ...
also that fighter docks try endless to build new ftr all the time ,,,

That Fighter Bay has ION Defense 20 and have now Bombers and Interceptors with ION Defense 19 !!!!!!!!!!
they aren't build in the stations in the system TERRA, they just explode over and over !

The 7 physical damage of Gravitic Storms however? Yeah, probaly can make things explode!
And yes, I reported the issue with fighters exploding when there is no mathematical way for it at 7 damage already.
I think I read Ion Proteciton being on the Road Map. But I can not find that one right now and of course the question is when they get around to that. Hopefully before they increase AI bonuses, to offset them getting stuck on Nebulas.
