Pontoon bridge question

Post by elmo3 »

See the attached pic. The Axis bridge engineer was able to make pontoon bridges into three adjacent hexes. I can see being able to make a bridge to the NE and SE. Should they be able to make a bridge to the East with two Soviet units in the adjacent hex? Seems like those Soviets would make that nearly impossible.

They still have to cross...which they may find hard.

If I remember from beta testing it's a necessary abstraction, otherwise the Red Army player just places ant units all along the river and no crossing would be possible.

Yeah I thought of that, but that's not an "ant" unit guarding the river bank. Not sure what size the other Soviet unit was.

Page 50 in the manual says a pontoon bridge is removed at the end of a turn if:
Enemy Adjacent to the bridging engineer (i.e. the enemy is on the other end of the pontoon).
I let my game run a couple of turns with the enemy adjacent to the bridging engineer in the above example but the pontoon bridge was never removed. Can someone clarify what the rules are trying to say here?

I'll update the manual as it's is wrong (out of date).
The rule was changed during Beta as it should be "nearly impossible" but not "impossible". So the pontoon is really a contested crossing, but as governato says, abstracted.
I'll get this and everything else fixed!
Thanks,

Just a small reminder that the wording in the manual still indicates that the pontoon bridges are lost if there is an enemy unit on the other side at the end of the turn.
