Would you accept a job to play CMO?

Post by bladesinger79 »

Let's say the federal government is trying to save money and offered positions to us civilians to play this game for research. Let's say the pay is a salary of living wage for about two years (government contracts are NEVER permanent for individuals). Our job is to play the scenarios and write up detailed AARs within deadlines and guidelines. No benefits. Must know how to file military-grade reports and answer to the Pentagon or whomever. Must know the equipment, tactics, doctrines, everything military related. Slim chance at a reference for other jobs later on. Work at home.

This is not gaming, it's a JOB. It has expectations and a bit of stress like any other employment. Yet, a job operating a game we all enjoy.

I'm just curious. I'd do this for a different game called Steel Beasts Pro. Who would take this?

If it is a job, then obligations come and the fun is gone, probably

I was recruited through these forums to take a job with University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) to use Command:PE in analytical research. I will say that my love and appreciation of the sim is deeper now and I do not get tired of playing. I would certainly entertain an offer like the one you mention.

I do wonder does CMO count as dual-use technology and subject to export restriction?

I don’t think so, there are a number of Russian users known here. Although I suppose they could have bought it on vacation and brought it back maybe?

But years ago when WarfareSims put out some hiring info, I do recall them stating that applications from Russia and China were not accepted, only NATO/US-friendly countries.

You should hypothetically consider applying for this not-job, @Bladesinger79.

Tried it and it wasn't for me. So maybe I should update to- give it a shot, but leave yourself a good out!

That’s simultaneously concerning and curiosity-inducing!

What part of the experience turned you off?
What defines a ‘good out’?

There was nothing wrong with the people, places or things if that's the dirt you want. Just wasn't a good match for me. My one complaint has more to do with English cab drivers...

CMO is best for me as a hobby. That has everything to do with creative freedom. I might actually start producing scenarios again once Tiny gets to a good state. Its gonna be awesome.

A good out is having the education, experience, and skillsets to have the freedom to move into something that might do it for you if something doesn't work out.

I would love to do it, but I have a good job/career. Maybe when I retire.

If I had to choose, i'd probably turn down the opportunity for a couple reasons:

1) I don't believe I have enough skill in actually conducting the operations for results to be acceptable to the DOD.

2) I would be very hesitant to take something I love as a hobby and try to make it into a job. It could end up making me dislike that hobby. That's just me personally.

I could see enjoying an occasional request to review and give detailed feedback on a professional scenario, in the sense of the people in question wanting to get some outside eyes on what they are trying to figure out. Of course anyone doing such work would need to get some degree of secret clearance and pass a background check. I think I would pass that personally.

I would volunteer - maybe - since I had a great time with a online brainstorming project the Pentagon opened to the public a few years back. Full time would really cut into activities it took a lifetime of work to set up.

For me the most interesting part is in the design and editing capabilities. Being able to create scenarios and different logics, the programming and development part calls my attention more than the operative part, mainly because I don't have enough operative knowledge to take full advantage of it and instead in the creation and development part I am more comfortable.

Military-grade reports? You mean like wordy PowerPoint slides and badly written prose?

I'd like to think my freshman-year English composition professor expects more of me.

No benefits? No. In America you need health insurance through your employer. If you don't get it, it's a no go. You're risking premature death otherwise.

Work at home? Not possible. To do this kind of work you'd need to be in a secured environment.

All in all, it sounds like a scam. I'd tell them to pound sand.

Give up my full-time job to do this? No.

Do this as a per-hour/contract basis? Yep.
