1812 as Russia with v1.25.03 Hotfix #5

Post by pzgndr »

Here we go, playing Russia in the 1812 scenario. June 1812, Russia. I drop garrisons at Kovno, Brest-Litovsk, and Khotin and retreat forces back towards Vitebsk and Kiev.

July 1812, Spain. British retreats to defend Lisbon, then France continues retreat from Spain. Massena and Soult withdraw. This pretty much ends action in Spain other than continued French retreats to get out of Spain.

August 1812. France moves first, getting a double move. France moves to attack Russia at Smolensk, but not with Napoleon who moves to help with the Riga siege. The Smolensk battle could have been worse than it was, but Russia only lost 12 while France lost 26 and lost what should have been an important battle.

August 1812, Russia. I retreat the army from Smolensk back to Moscow. In the north, France had moved the Polish corps to take Tver, so I moved Bagration to take it back. Alas, a 38:12 battle that looked like a sure win ended in a French victory and Bagration withdraws toward Moscow. Russia is out of money for supply, so September might be rough.

September 1812. Since I'll be foraging anyway, I send Bagration back to Tver and get a small victory. But Russia loses 22 factors to forage losses. Ouch. There's a Lesson Learned here to set aside more money for supply than you think you'll need. You can always spend extra money later, and that's cheaper than spending extra money to rebuild unnecessary losses.

September 1812, France. Tver has turned into quite the battlefield. Ney and Murat attempt to restore French honor by counter-attacking at Tver but it ends up being a 25:28 battle after French pre-battle foraging losses. France takes a few more losses and withdraws from an inconclusive battle. Napoleon left the Lombardy corps to continue the siege at Riga while he moved back towards Vitebsk. France had also run out of money for supply and lost 24 factors. As Russia goes into an economic phase, I build a couple of cavalry and the rest militia. I may need troops now.

September 1812, Great Britain. Down south, the British launch a long-range invasion to Naples from Lisbon. Landing force even includes a Portugese corps. Well played.

October 1812, Russia. In the south, Tormassov has an opportunity to attack French XI corps in the open, 43:12, and snatches a small but not decisive victory. The French live to fight another day. Up north, the army holds at Moscow, waiting...

October 1812, France. Siege battles at Riga, Smolensk, and Kiev (XI corps!) keep the French busy and away from Moscow. Napoleon went back to Riga again to help with the siege. (Note: things like this get my attention so I'll be making another AI adjustment regarding sieges.)

November 1812, Russia. Tormassov moves to retake Kiev, eliminating the French XI corps. Moscow stands firm, waiting. It's starting to get cold...

November 1812, France. Ney and Murat advance towards Moscow but lack the strength to attack. France assaults Smolensk and finally take it, but Riga holds on.

December 1812. Finale. Russia placed a depot in Kiev, the Riga garrison failed forage and surrendered, and Moscow continued to hold with plenty of money for supply. France, however, lost 14 factors to foraging losses and ended up outside Moscow with about 45 factors to Russia's 72. France still has other forces near Vitebsk, but 1812 closes out with Russia in pretty good shape to start pushing back in 1813...
