Bugged or just crazy?

Post by thegreybetween »

Greetings,

I decided to start a game in 1.1.6.5 (Main branch Discovery Update; Steam) playing as a Zenox Technocracy. I turned on pretty much all of the event types (pre-warp events, abandoned ships/bases, etc). I got some weird results, so I tried another game with the same setup and got similar results.

It seems like there are some events/event locations that are spawning multiple times, and other things that just seem like they're way too common. For example, in the home system of the latest game (United Orazoon Empire), there are:
- 16 known ruins, including 2x Ancient Zenox Research Bases on the homeworld and 2x Crashed Zenox Ship sites
- 9 different hostile pirate base locations, including 2x junkyard defenders
- 14+ abandoned ships and at least 3 abandoned bases

Some other things of note:
- In one of the games (Shantol Empire), the Technocracy starting scientist was actually granted twice.
- [Not a bug, but funny] One of the two scientists triggered a research breakthrough and was then immediately dismissed as incompetent. I assume it is because the other scientist has the Demoralizing trait.
- Automated research picks Planetary Governance way too early (3rd tech overall while at 15-20 years to research) [This looks like something that will be addressed in the 1.1.6.7 update]

Anyway, I'm not sure if this is intended or not, but it feels like something is buggy here. I'm not sure if it is an issue with the new event selectors being a little overzealous or if there is an issue with the Zenox that cause racial events to double spawn, but I figured it was worth sharing in case it proves helpful.

Save 1 is "Shantol Empire". It has the doubled events and the doubled scientist (since dismissed). The system is only partially explored because I wanted to try another game to see if it persisted

Save 2 is "United Orazoon Empire". I've mostly explored the home system, which has all of the stuff mentioned above and is actively researching the Planetary Governance tech.

I think you have a messed up installation. Possibly with multiple copies of GameEvents*.xml files.

I suggest completely reinstalling the game. Might be a good idea to install into a new folder.

Thanks

Weird. I've been on Steam since release, and always on the main branch. So, if something got messed up, it was something that must have happened as part of the Steam download of the 1.1.6.5 patch.

This is new for me. Do I simply uninstall it and then reinstall it? I'm not sure how Steam does things, so I have no idea how to remap where it installs the file, so I don't know if I can move it to a different folder? Is there a way I can check that the install is good (either before or after a fresh reinstall)? Sorry for the basics; I've always just trusted Steam :-P

I was thinking a little more about it last night, and the only logical thing I could think of was that the new game settings to determine which events you want in the game might be generating events without checking to see if other event generators are also creating similar events. For example, if [Player is Zenox] creates certain event locations like the ancient research complex, but [Player is Prewarp] is also set up to add that ruin due to the 50% boost to initial warp tech, then it might be creating two instances of it. The event itself only happens once, but the related locations are spawning multiple times.

Anyway, thanks for everything. Cheers!

I found the XML files in Steam. I went through them and do not have any duplicates. I have:

GameEvents (last updated 8/22/2023)
GameEvents_Ancient _Guardian_Vaults (last updated 8/22/2023)
GameEvents_Dhayut (last updated 8/22/2023)
GameEvents_Governments (last updated 8/22/2023)
GameEvents_HarmoniousUtopia_Government (last updated 3/16/2023)
GameEvents_Ikkuro (last updated 8/22/2023)
GameEvents_Ikkuro_RaceEvents (last updated 3/16/2023)
GameEvents_SurveillanceOligarchy_Government (last updated 3/16/2023)

I will uninstall and reinstall just in case, but it all looks good. I'll start a new game and update with results.

Fresh install seemed to do the trick. I can't tell anything different about the files, but I freely admit that I have no idea what I'm really talking about.

New game has a "normal" home system; 3 ruins (no duplicates) and the usual stuff one would expect.

So, thanks again! The final verdict is that it wasn't a bug, just crazy :-)
