Game keeps Crashing to Desktop

Post by EpicD4ve »

Hi all -

Never really had too many issues with playing DW2 before bar the occassional crash to desktop, however, since September this has for some reason become very common. Sometimes the game will run for a little while, but a lot of the time now it will just constantly ctd after only running a few minutes. I tried the beta patch in the hope that the issue was fixed, but sadly no joy.

I've tried to narrow down what is causing the ctd, but because it has become so frequent I'm afraid I can't be much help. That and I'm not game techy in anyway I'm afraid.

I could be complete wrong (probably am), but I did wonder if it had something to do with the fact that I'm using a 2k monitor. Switching to Vulkan doesnt seem to make any difference to the crashing to desktop or their frequency, but one thing I did notice was if I swapped from dx11 to DXVK (either) it would keep the 2k resolution, but then when I look at the list while in DXVK there are no 2k resolution options only 1080p. Probably unralated to the ctd, but maybe still something worth mentioning.

I've attached the DxDiag, session log, and a crash dump game save sadly too large

Hope this helps. Let me know if there is anything I can do in the meantime.

Thanks for that report and Crashdump file.

Would be very helpful to see the savegame for this. Are you please able to upload to a file-sharing service and post the link in this thread?

Thanks

Thanks for that savegame. Unfortunately I haven't been able to repeat the crash.

Does that savegame always consistently crash for you? Is there some specific action that causes it to crash?

The game seems stable early game, but as soon as I start approaching the early midgame then the ctd's start creeping in. That save sometimes as soon as I unpause it will crash, but then I've manage to get it to run it longer and not get a ctd until later.

I've run that particular save a little later, but when then when I loaded up this morning it immediately ctd twice. I was wondering if it was something to do with my fleets in combat, but as the camera wasn't panned onto them and they are automated clearing out space critters I can't be sure. The other thing I was feeling it maybe about was diplomatic messages I was receiving and the map updating having encountered new empires especially at 4x speed. The other thing I was wondering was if the auto save was making it crash for some reason being set at 5mins, but changing the settings doesn't seem to make a difference and naturally it wouldn't autosave as soon as it loads the game.

I've switched back to dx11 and 2k resolution and have two monitors and usually play with a programme or youbute open on my second monitor. Don't know if that is affecting the stability of the game either.

As you can probably tell though, these are mainly just guesses and I can't put my finger on what is causing the ctd.

Thanks for that extra info.

Do you have any other Crashdump files that you could upload here? Or do they always look the same as the one already at the top of this thread?

Any other different Crashdumps would help.

Thanks

Thanks for those extra crashdumps.

I'm wondering whether you have mismatched file versions in your installation.

If you installed from Steam can you please try verifying your files.

If you used the Matrix or Gog installer, please try reinstalling to a fresh folder.

Also try without any mods.

When i noticed I was frequently ctd I did a clean install and even deleted all old saved games. However, I did just verify the game via steam and it said it needed to retrieve two files. I'll let you know if the ctd keep happening. (Also im not using any mods.)

Thanks Elliot for looking into this I really appreciate it.

Game has run for about 30-45mins without a crash - which is a huge improvement and I've just come back after having to do something else for a while. However, again the game is ctd on unpausing autosave. So by chance I tried to verify the game again via steam and again it came back with that two files needed to be retrieved. Sadly, not getting crash dumps yet. Weird

If you don't see crashdump files in the data/Logs folder then you can also check your Windows Application event log for entries: Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application.

Check for any error entries around the time of the crash. There will often be 2 entries, one for the crash itself and another with the .Net stack trace. The stack trace entry is the most useful one for me.

Thanks

Just to give a bit of an update - I did a complete re-install of the game and even went into the steam folders and deleted any residual files/folders after uninstalling. Sadly, not had a huge amount of time to play since, but so far my new the game it has been running far smoother. I'll let you know if I run into any issues once things have progressed a little further.

Thanks though for your help/input - you guys are doing a great job with dw2 :)

Hi there!

I have the exact same issue as OP. This was a fresh GOG install, than patch by patch update + DLCs. I did not have this problem before, although it's been a while since I touched the game. This is on a new machine, latest bios and drivers, and DW2 was the 1st thing after a win10 install. I have studio driver instead of game ready, that's the only difference compared to most users I think. Largest grid/max stars, no problems at first, than ctd started when more stuff began to show up.
i9-13900K/192gb ram/3*4090/etc, shouldn't be a hardware thing. It's not slowing down, it's just crashing...

edit: I'll dig up a few crashdumps if i can and post it
edit2: I also tried vulkan, but for me it crashed faster than dx ( tried only once though.. )

Thanks for the report and the info. Please do post any crash logs as well as the session log you find to this thread. You can find the sessionlog and the crashdump in the Logs folder found here: \Distant Worlds 2\data\Logs

If you don't see crashdumps, please look into Windows Event Viewer -> click on Applications in the left column -> see if there are any entries for .NETRuntime around the same time as your crashes -> paste what you find here.

I managed to play for an hour on the newer machine with a larger savegame( 250MB ) after I did the following steps : installed game ready driver instead of studio driver, disabled vsync, limited max frame rate to 120, enabled texture streaming, and lifted the system usage from 60% to 95%. But today it started crashing again.

There wasn't anything in the applications part, but found some in the administrative events, donno if that helps, but here they are :

Thanks for the info! We released an official update yesterday that has a slew of fixes and changes. Do you mind trying the game on this new update v1.1.8.1 and see if you can still reproduce these crashes?

Game crashes usually in 1 to 5 minutes after loading the save. I did not have any problems on my other campaigns started before the fleet update. Sometimes crash dump is there and I send it when starting the game, sometimes I have to use event viewer.

Edit: ok it has something to do with fleet targets. It crashes instantly after I click on the fleet targets in the fleet menu.
