Orb and Crown 0.5 YueJin(Allies) Vs Beriand (Adversaries)

Post by YueJin »

Playing a fantasy scenario like this has stirred my desire to do a bit of creative writing, as well as introduce people to this excellent mod. I’ll do a narrative introduction to the major factions of the Allied side based on the documentation and stuff I’ve made up off that along with some narrative for major moments of the campaign. Screenshots and gameplay description will tell the story of the day-to-day events.

Feel free to comment on my rusty writing, ask questions or give the campaign a try. It can be downloaded here : https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/view ... 0516408223

Prince Amund of Angnord

Image

Celebrations were in full swing in the city of Watersbend to celebrate the arrival of the Mithril Sceptre, the legendary artefact passed down through the line of the rulers of Angford. Every noble of the realm was present to witness Prince Amund receive the proof of his inheritance. The prince himself was in deep conversation with Lord Lyrion of Goodrich, one of his closest friends and advisors.

“Finally, father has run out of excuses to keep the Sceptre in Huntington.” Prince Amund spoke with a quiet rage. “Opposition from the church, the dwarves the elves, bandits on the road. Any further delays and people would have started to believe the rumours he wants me disinherited.”

“Amund, whilst King Amyst is not the man he was in his prime, he knows you are a worthy successor to the throne. I suspect he has been poorly advised by barons opposed to the reforms you have implemented here.” Lyrion replied.
“Well regardless,” the prince said having overcome his irritation. “The sceptre is here now. At least the people will have something to talk about other than the latest raids from Mittleheim. Speaking of which, still no news from the commander at Xanders Keep? I had expected his report on security at Haltice by now.”

“No my Lord, strangely we have had no messengers or travellers from anywhere West of Shrewsbury for several days now. I had expected the mayor of Rivermyst to be here before the sceptre arrived. There’s been a strange quiet over the Desryn valley recently.”

As the prince stood to address the gathered nobility, the great double doors of the throne room were thrown open and General Tyralis of the Watersbend guard strode with haste towards him, the old man’s face ashen.

“My Lord,” he began with a slight tremor in his normally implacable voice. “Crows Hold has fallen, the garrison there wiped out almost to the last man. The survivors insist that before the assault, the walls were destroyed by the great dragon of Ymirrenvale, Draca the Dreadwyrm.”

“Impossible,” gasped Amund, “Draca has guarded his hoard in the Heimdalls Mountains as long as anyone can remember.” His face drained of colour as he realised the motivation behind the dragon’s attack, “The sceptre, he’s come for the Mithril Sceptre.”

Image

Over the next week panic engulfed the city. At first the veteran city guard prepared to endure a siege but after seeing the size of the Dreadhoard assembled by the dragon and his human servants, the nobles and soldiers evacuated to the port town of Donsborough. Prince Amund fled to Guildford where he swallowed his pride and asked his sister Princess Krystalis for aid. Emissaries were sent to Angford to beg King Amyst to advance on Watersbend from the West and to the elves of the Beegwulf forest to threaten Draca’s southern flank.

The war of the Mithril Sceptre had begun.

The Ancient lands

Fireglow (July) 8th, 2400

Pharaoh Setessa

Image

Setessa, most honoured Pharaoh of the Ancient Lands stared at the camp of the nomad soldiers across the Lake of Life. Since claiming dominion over the empire border raids from the Golden Khanate had been a feature of life for people living near the Altan Mountains. This, however, was different. In a short few weeks, an organised band of the nomadic warriors had swept across the desert, sacked the cloud city of Akros and showed no signs of stopping there.

His veterans had assembled on the shores of the great lake that was the heart of this desert land and he was determined that the barbarians would advance no further. Fortunately, the leader of the dwarves of Brawnanvil, the seemingly ageless Karo-Mana had been quick to react and had marched to the Southern bank of the lake to command the defences there and the great eagles of Geramis Tor were ready to wreak havoc on the tenuous supply lines of the Khanate.

It had taken years of strife and bloodshed for him to wrest control of this land, it would take more than some filthy barbarians to take it from him now.

Marquis of Auxerre could not help to smile, walking through muddy streets of Trondheim. It was despite all the smell, recent rains, cold wind, primitive locals, and lack of fine wine. There were things to be content about! Ten thousand mercenaries and petty raiders... scum from all over Nortdelm and both Kylmas, who in any other year could plunder and rape in vicinity of La Rochelle or Port Sur, they all found greater purpose. Just a little bit of gold from Queen Delafosse chests, paired with months of scheming, and voila. Well, loss of a couple of particularly splending crown jewels was unfortunate... but necessary to get the attention of Draca, as Marquis explained to the royal council.

Now all these mercenaries and draconic forces were let loose on Angford. They will not reach prince Amund himself, obviously, but at least he and his pet Lyrion will shit themselves, running to Donsborough or even Guildford, and clueless about future torments waiting for their kingdom. Grandpa-king Amyst also knows nothing about what lurks in shadows. Maybe Marquis will soon ride through ruins of their capitals? Eh, no, better to sail a river among burning fields.

Well, there remains one more deal with Jarls to be sealed, and he will be off to Grande Cite. Some additional mustering of Raiders du Mort will do them good. With cavalry, gunpowder and magic, Andania will triumph, in a clean superiority of true statecraft over all those fat bishops and barons, sucked to dwarves and elves to trade and move their crafts, instead of relying human ingenuity. The best part was that noble backward knights of Angford thought him dead after
the Vallaneuvre skirmish. Heh, how could he be dead? There is so much work left to be done.

*just paying a friendly visit*
Also, I try to not look at maps, but still you might consider waiting one or two turns more, I don't know, sorry 8-)

Thanks Beriand, you're more than welcome to pop in and make contributions and read any narrative parts of the AAR. I'll be a couple of months behind the in-game action anyway.

The major powers and their plans

Image

Angnord

Angnord and Guildford begin the game under attack from the forces of Draca the Dreadwyrm and will spend most of the first year fighting to reclaim their capital, Watersbend. The elves of the Beegwulf forest and troops from Angford will help with this. Once the forces of the dragon have been defeated, they will turn their attention to the Vikings of Mittleheim in the East, aiming to knock them off of the continent.

Image

Angford

Angford will grow to become the most powerful of the Allied major powers but will have to survive fighting on multiple fronts. In the West, they must help Angnord destroy Draca and then defend against any troops from Andania that attack from Mermont.

Image

In the East, Angford’s minors: Morodon and Thrangren will attack Guartenheim forcing them to move onto the defensive and eventually destroying them alongside troops from Mul’Kan.

Image

Mul’Kan

Mul’Kan’s role in the early game is simple, fight Guartenheim. In this game the Adversaries did not choose to tunnel to Guildford so Mul’Kan will be facing a lot of pressure until Angford can attack to draw them away. Once the situation has stabilised, Mul’Kan will look to counterattack towards Alternburg, the capital of Guartenheim’s minor.

Image

Image

The Ancients

The Ancients are the punching bag of the allies. They start under attack from the Golden Khanate and will not be able to push them out unaided. Very soon as well Imhotep will attack from the South, likely depriving the Ancients of important cities and mines. Even later, Potentia will join in, either by attacking across the Barbaros strait or by joining forces with the Khanate in a frontal assault.
The Ancients must survive, taking the most positive trades possible until troops from the Tribal League can arrive in enough numbers to keep them alive.

Image

Image

Tribal League

The Tribal League are the most remote power and have a lot of freedom in deciding what to do. It will take them quite some time to come online however, as they must wait for their minors to join as well as research logistics and industry to finance moving their troops by sea (very expensive). They will probably need to send a sizable land force to prop up the Ancients and then build up an amphibious force to hit an adversary power at a weak point.

This is a great AAR of a contest between two excellent players. I am engrossed in your narrative, too - so well written and capturing the essence of the situation with flair. As a teacher of English, I enjoy well-written prose immensely! :) I hope you both enjoy the game.

Shadowpeak – Beegwulf Forest

Image

Hamon, First Counsel of the Elves stared inscrutably at the emissary from Angnord, emotion impossible to detect on his face that was at the same time both youthful and ancient. After what seemed to be an age of silent contemplation he spoke.

“The elven people will not allow the Emerald Imperium to fall into the clutches of this Dreadwrym. You may tell your prince that we will strike at Morbryte where his human thralls have made their camp before the end of Fireglow.”
At this, the room was filled with quiet whispers from the assembled leaders of the elven cities and Thuridan, the young firebrand from the Western city of Mythera Ennore jumped forward.

“With the greatest of respect elder, my people will not stand for an alliance with the humans, even now their timber mills are growing, taking more and more from the forest and hunting our animals to extinction. The sacred glade at Gaho Entheas was despoiled two weeks ago by human explorers.”

Hamon held up a hand to stem the flow of anger coming from the young man.

“Peace, Thuridan, I have heard the tales of encroachment from the men of the East however, this plea for aid comes from Prince Amund and his Northerners who have always treated fairly with us. Since he took up the throne in Angnord our traders have prospered, and contentment has filled the forest. Nevertheless, I will send a delegation to King Amyst proposing restrictions on the logging near your settlements and on humans entering the forest on journeys of hunting and discovery. I have no doubt that in this time of strife he will understand the need to join together in the face of the menace that stalks these lands.”

Castile Throne Room – Angford

Image

“Ridiculous!” The still powerful voice of King Amyst boomed out across the vast throne room. “Already I have emptied my treasury sending aid to my useless son and now you expect me to rein in the great industrialists of my Kingdom for your benefit. Never, I say. In fact I will send word to Baron Fitzroy to expand logging operations and to begin clearing an area near Huntington for a new Human settlement.”

His beady eyes flickered across the delegation of Elves and Angnordians. “I see this for what it is. For too long Amund has conspired with you untrustworthy elves and this is the latest part of your schemes to bring me down. You may return to your masters and tell them to expect nothing from Angford.”

Despair set in across the hearts of the delegation and they prepared to depart with these terrible words from the King when Rawkin Ashcroft, the rakish young adventurer who had won fame for his expeditions to Tal’Dorei and the jungles of Chult sauntered jauntily up to the king and knelt before the throne.

Image

“My king, I thought it best to tell you, after I had a chat with him about the awful attack on Watersbend, the Bishop of Huntington has worked himself up into a terrible frenzy about the forces of darkness engulfing our lands and all that and has taken the Borgian Guard off to Ymirrenvale and Rivermyst. He was going on about destroying the dragon and saving humanity. Of course, I knew you wouldn’t want him going on such a dangerous venture unaccompanied, so I took the liberty of sending two battalions of our best men off after him.”

With that, he tipped his ridiculous looking feathered hat at the elvish delegation and with a “by your leave,” directed at the spluttering king swirled his cloak about him and strode out of the room.

The Bishop of Huntington begins the attack from Angford, destroying the mercenaries defending the dragon’s lair at Ymirrenvale. The elves assault Shrewsbury destroying an infantry unit although they are hampered by the anti-war group. In the West, Prince Amund begins preparations to retake Watersbend castle from the Dreadhorde. Draca’s troops have dug in around Morbryte and the fighting will be tough to defeat the dragon.

In the Ancient Lands, the front line remains static after some casualties were inflicted on the first wave of Khanate veterans.

Rakimabad – Northern Mul’Kan

Firewane (September) 24th

Image

General Al-Radi’s horse thundered through the gates of Rakimabad, the old General leading the remnants of his light cavalry back into the city. Ordering the gates closed behind them, he dismounted, commanding archers to the walls and mustering the city militia. Rushing to the chambers of Mayor Al-Qasim he found the man scurrying about, collecting his valuables in a large ornate trunk.

“Mayor, you must spread word to the citizens at once. If we do not start the evacuation immediately it will be too late for many.”

The mayor’s eyes darted about in a manner reminiscent of a terrified mouse, his voice quavering as he replied, “Ah, General it really is that bad then. I was confident in the strong arms of your men to keep us and our property safe.”

The General fixed the corpulent bureaucrat with a piercing stare and spoke as if to a small child, “Every creature of darkness from over the Fetidwood is heading here right now. Orcs, Goblins, Giants, as well as horrific monsters resurrected through the dark powers of the Guartenheim liches. Every one of them desperate to put your head on a stick and parade it around the burning remnants of your city. Some of my men will hold them back for as long as we can but this is like nothing we’ve ever seen before. Now, I trust you’ll perform your role of being the first out of the city leading the refugees perfectly.”

“Of course, General”, squeaked the mayor. “You can, er… rely on my leadership.”

“Of that I have no doubts,” scoffed Al-Radi turning his back on Al-Qasim and marching back out into the sunlight. “Now, time for these old bones to fight one last campaign.”

Image

Guartenheim launches a full scale assault on Mul’Kan overrunning the troops at Fayez Post and taking the mines to the South. Their advance guard is bloodied but the cities of Rakimabad and Hashim will soon fall. Troops will be withdrawn to the South until they can be reinforced and Guartenheim is distracted elsewhere.

Mittleheim also declares war on the Silk Sultanate and moves in with three veteran units. This is a bold play as Angnord could quickly march on their capital with those key units out of position if Draca can be defeated soon.

Watersbend Front

Image

The battle of Watersbend begins. Local militias begin to surround the castle whilst Prince Amund’s veterans begin the attack suffering casualties but breaching the walls in several places. This allows the giants of Maelstrom to smash into the Dreadhorde troops wiping them out. Draca himself has flown back to Morbryte to defend against the elves and Princess Krystalis attacking from the South so after a turn of rest, Amund’s troops will try to repeat their attack against the Dreadcult elites still occupying Watersbend. Meanwhile, the Bishop of Huntington’s elite Borgian guard take Rivermyst and close the net tighter around Morbryte.

Image

Mul’Kan / Guartenheim Front

The plan of Mittleheim and Guartenheim is clear now. A quick assault on the Silk Sultanate whilst Angnord and Angford are still distracted by Draca. Unfortunately, it seems as if they’ll succeed in this as although Morodon have launched an incursion into the Bleaklands, they won’t have enough troops to force Guartenheim on the defensive until Thrangren joins the Allies.

Image

The Ancients Front

Momentum has finally shifted around the Lake of Life as the Golden Khanate forces begin to fall back due to the constant bombing by the Giant Wings unit having devastated their supply lines. Pharoah Setessa is weighing up the possibility of going on the offensive but is wary of being drawn into a trap, especially with forces from his old Civil War adversary marching up the West coast.

Redfall (November) 23rd

Watersbend Front
Prince Amund rode triumphantly through the streets of Watersbend although his elation was tempered by the destruction left behind by the Dreadhorde that had occupied the city. Six months of hard fighting, but the end was finally in sight Now it was his sister’s turn to finish the job. She had insisted on going with the elves to demonstrate commitment to the alliance and strike straight at Draca. Amund almost felt sorry for the dragon and its followers. If there was one thing he had learnt as a boy, it was never to underestimate Krystalis.

Image

With Draca down to just his second rate units, the dragon himself will be open to attack shortly. I'm pushing the elves to the limit as they'll leave the war after Draca is defeated anyway so there's no point reinforcing them. I still don't want to lose units due to the NM hit but they'll stay on low strength.

Snowflake (December) 7th

Watersbend Front

Image

Finally, the Allied troops have battled adjacent to Draca. We can see he’s still fairly healthy at 8 strength but I have a lot of units ready to strike the killing blow. Even a low strength and morale, the elves are more than a match for infantry and with the March in Formation tech (+1 AP) the Angford elites are in range to join the attack next turn. The main Angnord army is marching back to Guildford to prepare for the next campaign.

Mul’Kan Front

Image

The Silk Sultanate is surrounded by Vikings and monsters. They won’t hold out much longer but can hopefully inflict some damage and delay as much as possible.

Image

Mul’Kan will build up their forces in the South ready to retake the Northern cities. There’s an elite and couple of veteran units about to arrive so I’m not too worried here.

Morbryte Front

Image

Princess Krystalis shivered in a mixture of apprehension and anticipation. She had spent her whole life proving herself to be one of the most capable administrators Angford had ever produced, revolutionising the industry of Guildford, forming treaties of friendship and trade with the non-human races and driving the Viking raiders back a hundred miles away from Guildford City. Still, it was not enough, no achievement seemed able to satisfy her desire for superiority over her older brother or recognition by her father. This though…Princess Krystalis, dragon slayer. This would be her crowning moment of glory a feat few others throughout history had every achieved.

Men from her elite guard, the Krystalites had been watching the city of Morbryte as the Borgian Guard of Huntington Cathedral led the first assault. They had been driven back in the face of terrible gouts of dragon fire but had reported that the Dreadwyrm seemed strangely reluctant to take flight. Exhaustion from months of relentless flying and fighting or possibly a wound to one of the great black wings. Whatever the reason, this was her chance, and it would not be allowed to slip away. Breathing deeply one last time, Krystalis mounted her warhorse, cantered to the edge of the wood line and addressed her guard.

“My most loyal of friends, today we ride into the annals of history. By nightfall we will either be charred ash on the ground or names that will live forever. Follow me, for this is the day we slay a legend!”

Image

Image

Draca is slain and Morbryte falls signalling the end of the first phase of the Mithril Sceptre. The Angford elites struck first but Draca evaded both of their attacks. I was a bit worried I might lose both elites if I sent the Guildford ones in as well, but the Krystalites did the job as they always seem to do (I have an inordinate amount of faith in this unit. There’s nothing special about them other than a good leader and a tech advantage in the early game but they always seem to work miracles.) Unfortunately, the elves and Maelstrom giants will leave the war now Draca is defeated but closing this front before the end of the year is a great sign for 2401.

Mul’Kan Front

Image

The Silk Sultanate is further closed in upon and Mul’Kan continues building up. The Morodonian incursion goes reasonably well as some enemy veterans are destroyed but we’re still waiting for Thangren to get another diplomacy hit. It’s at a 50% chance so shouldn’t take too much longer hopefully.

Ancients Front

Image

A limited counterattack to keep damage on low supply Khanate units goes ahead, we’ll see if they retreat or counter next turn. Sharp eyed readers might be able to spot the first unit from the Tribal League arriving on the West Coast to defend against the Imhotep forces marching up from the South.

Frostshow (February) 15th, 2401

The new year begins slowly. I’m still waiting on Thangren to join the war before beginning the assault on Guartenheim and Angnord/Angford are repositioning troops after Draca’s defeat.

The end of the road is imminent for the Silk Sultanate although they held out well forcing Mittleheim and Guartenheim to have a lot of vital units out of position and damaged.

Image

The Mul’Kan army is almost ready to counterattack to the North.

Image

Finally, off the coast of the Ancient lands an Imhotep galley is surrounded and destroyed. A small win but a good omen as this is the first naval unit lost on either side.

Andania / Angford Front

Rebellion breaks out in the Andanian province of Mutiner. Beriand is clearly well prepared for it with several elites, veterans and cavalry on the border. Even so, I’m hopeful that they can do some serious damage or even destroy some units. At the very least this ensures Angford will be very safe and can build up. The dwarven kingdom have also joined providing a serious army to face Andania with. After troops get in position I’ll consider a pre-emptive attack or if to stay on the defensive.

Image

Image

Mul’Kan / Guartenheim Front

The Mul’Kan army is ready to advance and retake their Northern cities. The dragon Lymrith should be joining Guartenheim shortly so wherever it is not is where my main offensive effort against Guartenheim will be.

Image

Angnord / Mittleheim Front

The build up on the Mittleheim border begins. The first order of business will be to retake Courland and then march onto Trondheim. At the very least this attack will ensure Mittleheim can’t provide help to Guartenheim.

Rainfall (May) 3rd, 2401

Mittleheim Front

The offensive begins with the destruction of the veteran unit that was holding Courland. My units are just stronger on this front, better tech, better leaders and more elites so I’ll be looking to take some very favourable trades and push the Vikings back to their capital.

Image

Angford / Mutiner Front

The rebels in Mutiner get some fantastic damage down onto the Andanian units destroying an elite from their minor and savaging some veterans as well. This is making a potential attack from Angford much more likely. Regular troops and dwarfish allies are in position on the border.

Image

Ancients Front

A bit of a miscalculation here along with some poor dice mean I fail to destroy the Imhotep veteran unit and the West and my elites are left stranded on the front line to die next turn. The dwarves and Tribal veterans are getting good damage done though so I’m hopeful the enemy can be turned back here.

Image

Mul’Kan / Guartenheim front

Despite the appearance of Lymrith, Doom of the desert (the second dragon) wiping out one of the Mul’Kan veterans, General Al-Radi’s troops push on to Rakimabad destroying the orcs occupying the city. If the Guartenheim elites and the dragon stay on this front Mul’Kan won’t be able to win this fight but the Morodon troops have taken Castle Drakurd on the West Coast and the elite army of elves and heroes from Thangren will soon be descending upon Guartenheim.

Image

The High Seas

In the first true naval engagement of the war, the combined Angnord and Angford fleet blunders into some Andanian sea hunters around Mercoria. The Andanian navy sorties and destroys the Edderton, an Angfordian warship however they’re clearly not expecting the Allied navy to be so concentrated, and we destroy two Andanian warships and a sea hunter in return. These ships take a long time to build and this should make the central ocean a safe place to transport Allied troops and raid enemy convoy lines.

Northern Front

Mittleheim’s minors are beginning to join the war and the small nation of Ironlord will soon be conquered. I could maybe have done a little more damage here but realistically there’s no way to keep the dwarves here alive.

Image

On the mainland however, Amund and Krystalis’ offensive against Mittleheim is progressing well. With armour 1 against weapons 0 it’s very difficult for the Vikings to counterattack my forward units and I’m fairly confident I can push them off of the continent.

Image

Mul’Kan / Guartenheim Front

Things take a turn for the worse for the Mul’Kan army. The dragon and elites are still in theatre here, and along with a fanatic unit (think kamikazes) they destroy my elites. This front will have to be more cautious for now.

Image

Things are much better on the Western Front, however. The Thrangren troops are taking up positions and the Morodonians have captured one of the mines.

Image

Limited news from other parts of the world for now. The Ancients/Tribals are hanging on and Angford is preparing to take the offensive against Andania.

Mittleheim front

The march towards Tronheim continues with the Guildford elites breaking through the defences around Hedby whilst the Angnord army takes the main road from Courland.

Image

Mul’Kan/Guartenheim front

The Mul’Kan army continues its withdrawal Southwards pursued by giants and the dragon.

Image

Ancients front

The situation for the Ancients takes a turn for the worse as the Khantate manage to break through the veterans defending the Northern banks of the lake. Losing the mine will pinch the low GP income further and the next good defensive position is near Setessa which really can’t be lost.

Mittleheim front

A Mittleheim counterattack results in the loss of elite units on both sides. This shouldn’t slow the advance on Trondheim though. The Angford advantage in numbers and quality is solid.

Image

Mul’Kan / Guartenheim front

Once again, the Mul’Kan army has been forced to retreat as far south as Rauf. The fortified towns in the West have been abandoned to concentrate what’s left of the troops. General Al-Radi narrowly escapes with his life once again on 1 strength although his men manage to take down the Trans-Morodonian giant unit.

Image

The Allies in the Bleaklands are now finally ready to put pressure on Guartheim’s capital, the great mountain where the lich lords have their fortress. I’m certain my opponent will have to pull all his troops back straight away to fight off this force. The goblins and orcs I can see won’t stand up to elites, elves and heroes.

Image

Andanian Front

Buoyed by the news of the rebellion in Andania and strengthened by the Dwarf Kingdoms, King Amyst sees an opportunity to seize Mermont before the Andanians can concentrate their forces. A probing invasion led by the zealous Bishop of Huntington and the Dwarven leaders will see what resistance it runs into.

Image

Potenian rebels

In Potentia an uprising of slaves and gladiators in the Southern city of Turasio Silbis should keep the Empress Victoria occupied for at least a short while. The longer it takes for the empire to consider expansionist options the better.

Mittleheim front

Battle lines are drawn up for what will hopefully be the final push on the Viking capital. Troops from their minor powers on the Northern islands are starting to arrive and I’d like to end this offensive before any more can land. The veterans will break the front line and then the Krystalites and Deadhold giants will storm the city.

In exciting non-war related news, the Countess of Watersbend's expedition to the North Pole has begun establishing a base camp. It’s rumoured that precious ores and gems are in abundance here and securing them will boost Angnord’s income significantly.

Mul’Kan / Guartenheim front

The battle for Guartenheim begins with an assault from Lymrith the dragon, fanatics and a horde of orcs destroying the Thrangren elites. The fanatics are one shot units like kamikazes so they perished in the attack and a unit of orcs was destroyed as well but losing the elites will make it much tougher to push across the river. Fortunately, it does seem as if all enemy forces have been withdrawn from the Mul’Kan front so after some rest and rebuilding they’ll attempt to go North again.

Sarnai front[

The independent sultanate of Sarnai is invaded by Khanate and Potentian forces. This front won’t last long as there is no possibility of reinforcement and the adversary forces far outnumber us here. Some damage is the best the allies can hope for.
