Gary Grigsby's War in the East 2 Morale Update
Good news for all you Gary Grigsby fans out there, a new update for War in the East 2 is now live.
The Morale update adds a new optional rule about, well... morale. You can find the new morale settings, which allow you to adjust national morale by country in new games, if you scroll down in the game options. Also introduced with 01.03.09 is a new optional rule that re-balances retreat attrition. When enabled, routing units will suffer less retreat attrition than normal. The default is for this to be off. With this option enabled you are under far greater pressure to actually encircle enemy formations to destroy them, rather than purely by pursuit.
1.03.10 rebalanced air/ground attacks. The number of requested bomber aircraft for Ground Attack Air Directives must now be set to at least 10 (or set to 0 for Automatic). This update also saw improvements to the multiplayer UI, making it easier to report and log any errors you may encounter.
You can find the full changelog posted below. The update will be available for download either automatically via Steam or directly from the forums here.
IMPORTANT NOTE 1: All save game and scenario files created with this or later versions may only be loaded with this or a later version. Versions prior to 1.03.03 may not load these newer save game or scenario files. Old saves and scenarios may be loaded with this and newer versions.
IMPORTANT NOTE 2:The extensive changes made to the OB and map files in 1.03.03 will require that any modded scenario created prior to 1.03.03 will need to have their generic data locked using generic data from 1.02.52 or an earlier version. If you are going to start a modded scenario that was created prior to 1.03.03, make sure that you are using a version of the scenario that had its generic data locked.

• 1.03.10 public beta version made official
V1.03.10 – 6th February 2024
New Features and Rule Changes
• Changes/improvements to the Multiplayer Server system:
o Any error from the server will display a message window that requires the player to press
a key to close. Please note the error message if you are going to report an issue to
technical support.
o Game now logs server requests/responses/errors in a server.log file that is stored in the
main game directory (Gary Grigsby’s War in the East 2). Whenever the game is restarted
and the first server request is made, it will create a new file. It will store the previous
server file as server-prev.log. If you report a tech support issue with your server game,
please attach your server.log and/or server-prev.log file to your report.
o Other changes were made to reduce the number of automatic retries, reduce the amount
of logins, and avoid token expiration issues.
• Rule Change – The number of requested bomber aircraft for Ground Attack Air Directives must
now be set to at least 10 (or set to 0 for Automatic).

V1.03.09 – 9th January 2024
New Features and Rule Changes
• New Game Option – Reduced Retreat Attrition – When enabled, routing units will suffer less
retreat attrition than normal. The default is for this to be off. This value may not be changed once
a scenario has begun in PBEM and MP games.
• New Game Option – Morale Mod (by country) – This allows a value between 0 and 20 to be set
for each active country. The value set is added to the ground national morale value for the
country. The default is for all of these to be set to 0. This value may not be changed once a
scenario has begun in PBEM and MP games.
• Leaders in charge of air command HQs will no longer gain victories and defeats.
• In order to reduce failures when attempting to save MP games, the amount of time has been
increased before a save will timeout with a failure.
• Manual correction (section 23.7) - Reserve units committed to support a cross river attack are not
subject to additional disruption.
• Manual correction (section 28.6.2) - Damage is calculated by factory as follows: ((100-
damage)/100) x factory points and rounding up. So a 12 factory with 40 damage would produce 8
(((100-40)/100) x 12) = 7.2 rounded up to 8.
• Updated the Living Manual.pdf file in the \Manuals folder. This is up to date with changes through
game version 1.03.0.

Re: Gary Grigsby's War in the East 2 Morale Update
My understanding is that one of the criticisms of WitE2 has been that the AI can 'teleport' out of encirclements. Will this new morale option end this AI capability?LiamR wrote: Mon Mar 25, 2024 2:45 pm With this option enabled you are under far greater pressure to actually encircle enemy formations to destroy them, rather than purely by pursuit.
Re: Gary Grigsby's War in the East 2 Morale Update
Your understanding is incorrect, the AI can't "teleport out of encirclements", the AI does teleport all it units on the map that are not engaged or encircled. I can't recall if the front line units disengage and reappear elsewhere or not, but encircled units do not.gwgardner wrote: Wed Mar 27, 2024 1:38 amMy understanding is that one of the criticisms of WitE2 has been that the AI can 'teleport' out of encirclements. Re: Gary Grigsby's War in the East 2 Morale Update
In addition, there should not be teleporting if, the AI has to move units from one hex adjacent to enemy units, to another hex adjacent to enemy units (ZOC to ZOC in boardgame language). So the pocket doesn't have to be fully closed/isolated to prevent teleporting. There may be rare exceptions to this, but to my knowledge we've quashed all (or most) of the bugs having to do with enhanced movement of these "trapped" units. Also, there are limits to what the teleporting units can do in their turn, and exactly what they can do are tied to the morale help level settings. The new country morale mods have nothing to do with the morale help level settings (other than they both end up having an impact on unit morale). So if you are playing the Germans and want to reduce the AI movement enhancements, but still provide the AI a boost, you could try leaving the morale help level at 100 and giving the Soviet a +10 to their national morale with the new modifier. Or you could give the Soviet AI 101 morale help (for some improved movement capabilities) and a +5 to their national morale with the new mod. The good news is that in an AI game, you can adjust the help levels and the national morale mods at any time. So you can have one setting when you start a game, and then adjust it later.

Re: Gary Grigsby's War in the East 2 Morale Update
Awesome, I'm going to try again! Thanks for the clarifications and advice. The game gets better and better.
Re: Gary Grigsby's War in the East 2 Morale Update
I'll see if I can find the save but I had an instance of a string of about 5 stacks of units "pinned" adjacent to the coast, the first, third and fifth hexes were in ZOCs and all were gone in one turn. Hex 5 or 6 contained a port. Perhaps in retrospect it would have been better just to ZOC the fourth and fifth hexes. That was with 105 morale setting. I ended up using the new morale-only settings and they give a better feel to the game (in my view) but if I ever improve then the flexibility is there to give the AI the additional benefits of the standard 100+ morale changes.
Re: Gary Grigsby's War in the East 2 Morale Update
I will beg forbearance as I, out of an abundance of caution, pose the question to Mr. Billings and his associates:
I am in June 1942 of a Grand Campaign No Early End. 01.03.10Beta is the version.
Will my Save Game files under 01.03.10Beta work if I update my game to this latest patch?
Thank you.

Re: Gary Grigsby's War in the East 2 Morale Update
Yes, the latest exe should always be able to load in saves made with earlier versions. If you or your opponent made a save with with 1.03.10, then 1.03.11 should load that save.
The issue that can come up with the latest version is, if you save with 1.03.10, your opponent will be unable to load that save with a version from before 1.03.03. Of course, in two (or more) human player games, all the players should be on the same patch. If one upgrades (before or during their turn), the others should upgrade, ideally before they start their next turn. If you look in the logistics phase report (shift-e) and uncheck all the boxes except "Version", you'll see what version was being used during the last logistics phase run (so what your opponent was using).
There are different issues for modders making modded scenario files, especially scenarios made before the recent 1.03.xx series of patches, as they should lock their generic files in their modded scenarios before they update.
If the scenario or save files have been hacked and altered in some other way, I can't say what impact that might have. I did receive a series of saves a few days ago from a player concerning an unrelated minor bug. I noticed that the last save in the series was created with 1.02.52 (which I could load with the latest exe), but I was unable to load the earlier saves in the series with either the latest exe, or 1.02.52. I can't explain that, and I'm waiting to hear back from the player to hear if he has any info that could help us figure why I can't load his earlier saves. This was a game against the AI.
Bottom line is that as long as everyone in a game is updating together (or it's a game against the AI), you should always be able to load a save from a standard scenario if you are using the latest exe version of the game. If that isn't the case, we want to know about it so we can figure out what's going wrong.

Love the game already but will happily grab some free new features. Many thanks.
Re: Gary Grigsby's War in the East 2 Morale Update
Hi!
Thank you for this awesome patch
I play a 1941 no early end german campaign actually (started with 1.03.10_beta and now 1.03.11), and I was surprised yesterday to see the Russians stop their "reaction and front attacks" since march 8 1942 ? (after the last blizzard I think)
Not a single attack on the entire front !?!
To the south, the German front was almost being disintegrated! This complete cessation of the russian general offensive saved me and the german southern front!
Do you think it's the 1.03.11?? Or or an improvement of the AI to preserve its strengths for the 1942 summer?
Thanks a lot for this fantastic game!

Re: Gary Grigsby's War in the East 2 Morale Update
I played 2 German turns (2 weeks) following the first russian turn with "no attack". If the Russians do not react again after my actualy turn, it will be 3 weeks without russian attacks.
On their 2nd turn with no attack, they have complety retreated (3 to 4 hexes) in two sectors to reorganize their front!
(If you want, I have german and russian automatic saves for each turn)

Re: Gary Grigsby's War in the East 2 Morale Update
Sounds like the AI is giving you a reprieve, as it prepares for an expected German summer offensive. 1942 can be a very tough time for the Soviet army. We're no longer making AI changes to the game, as we feel it's strong enough, and players have enough options to make things tougher/easier for themselves (including while in the middle of a game). Given the complexity of writing an AI for the game (including campaigns and scenarios), we feel it's best left as it is. Thanks for the info.

Re: Gary Grigsby's War in the East 2 Morale Update
Thank you very much for those explanations!
At the end of March (with a blizzard near Leningrad), the Russians attacked again 2 or 3 times.
It's definitely not a bug in my game
In the south, the russians no longer attack but fall back intelligently to form an effective line of defense near Kharkov and Belgorod.
Another little details I noticed in my game with 1.03.11 patch:
We are end of march and "1st panzer group" was not renamed "1st panzer army" like other panzer armies (2nd, 3rd and 4th)

Re: Gary Grigsby's War in the East 2 Morale Update
Just stay away from the Impossible difficulty, or it would be truly impossible to breakthrough the Red Army lines in 1942
