Golf was one of the first modern sports to codify its rules in 1744 in Edinburgh, Scotland. At the end of the 19th century, the first women’s tournaments were established. Today, there are more than 60 million golfers and over 30,000 golf courses worldwide.

BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE RULES
Golf is a straightforward game in principle and is effectively explained in its first rule: “The Game of Golf consists of playing a ball with a club from the teeing ground into the hole by a stroke or successive strokes in accordance with the Rules.” Players use different clubs based on varying criteria, including distance to the hole and playing surface.
The golf format at the Olympic Games is stroke play, which consists of counting the number of strokes a golfer takes to complete an 18-hole course played four times over four days. The player with the lowest number of strokes at the end of the four rounds wins the tournament.

OLYMPIC HISTORY
Prior to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, golf had featured on the Olympic programme on just two occasions: in 1900 and 1904. The sport made its Olympic comeback in Brazil and was contested again at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in 2021.

Doesn't golf also feature much cursing and swearing? Or maybe that is just the people who play infrequently . . .

Depends who's playing.
Tiger Woods has been worshipped by the majority of the world for his excellent play.
Tiger Woods curses God so many times that TV broadcasts had to mute microphones near him.
Tiger Woods was notrious for clearing his throat on greens (hacking spit), that in Europe he was warned to point of ban.

PGA Tour also has rules against wearing shorts.
PGA doesn't want players smoking (on TV).
Last weekend during The Open, Daniel Brown of Ireland was seen smoking multiple times on TV.
Course was Royal Troon, I don't think any cared.
Brown also was doing selfies with unknown fans.

Answer: Just depends.

In this world, money talks.
Viewership = money.
In the other world, I wouldn't be cursing.

So long as Team GB are in with a shout, I’ll watch just about anything - so basketball, handball, Greco-Roman wrestling and baseball are probably amongst those events I’ll give a wide berth to 😄 Is Greco-Roman wrestling even a thing anymore?? 🤪

I don't think that the original Greek wrestling is a thing anymore.

Wrestling start with Magna Carta 'document-if that was real-'. No Hittites, Persians or Egyptians were wrestling. Before Hittites was found by archaeologist Egypt civilization made a Treaty of Kadesh by himself. But later discovered Hittites was also a civilization. Anyway history about a fusion like a persona from different cultures. Difficult to predict what sport or idea originated from.

There was wrestling long before the Greeks and their Olympic games. But I think that the Greeks were probably more brutal with their wresting than the Persians and others.

Nothing highlights better the unbridled joy and absolute heartbreak that is elite sport than the women’s synchronised diving this morning. Two rounds to go the British girls were 6th in the synchronised diving. One round to go and they were back up to fourth - but miles from a medal. Indeed the Australians in third were vying for silver with the Americans.

The British pair put in a strong final dive to sit 3rd, but all the Aussies needed was a reasonable dive to claim at least 3rd. One shocking dive later and the poor Aussies were 5th, their medal hopes ended.

There is nothing like sport to test the whole range of emotions……

……what was I saying about heartbreak? Josh Tarling finished the men’s cycling time trial in 4th and just missed a medal by about 2 seconds - and missed silver by about 6 seconds. Why heartbreaking? Well alone amongst the front runners, the Welshman suffered a puncture that cost him about 15 seconds……..

Sport is so cruel……

Boxing judging………. What a load of…….. British boxer Charley Davison lost on a split decision against the Turkish fighter Hatice Akbas - if anyone can say how that was possible I’d be interested to hear it……

More nonsense in the ladies boxing……. I have always been wary of sports that have subjective scoring. Another British girl losing her bout for no apparent reason……

What is it about British cyclists and punctures?! Tom Pidcock, alone amongst the front runners, suffers a puncture while leading the mountain biking….. BUT - despite that, and despite rejoining 40 SECONDS behind the leader - he made up the difference to win the gold!!!! What a superb performance.

That is called "Heart" and it makes for a good story or a heart attack!

Meanwhile, somebody got it good for not being a good sport after he won one match. In the next match, he suffered . . .
