double bombing runs on airfield

Post by loudscott »

Just when you think you're starting to get the hang of things.....So intrigued by K62's 7000 VVS massacre here: https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/view ... 2&t=397041
I decided to do some testing with the air war. I'm using the Minsk tutorial scenario for that purpose. After setting up all the AD's (many times and many variations) and letting fly (so to speak) I notice that one airbase out of 16 ground attack AD's was getting bombed double the number of strikes I was ordering. Set to 3 and it would get bombed 6 times. Set it to 1 and it gets bombed twice. Also, the Air Execution Summary screen reports that it only gets bombed once but every other screen i.e. F11 view and Commanders Report indicates it got bombed twice. It appears that after the first run the escort fighters drop altitude and the entire flight makes a 2nd run. Out of 16 AD's the attack on Zvody is the only one the exhibits this behavior. Various screen shots below. Any ideas from one of you gurus out there??????

The good news is that I have seen that happen before, some years back. The bad news is that I cant remember if i worked out the cause.
Molotov : This we did not deserve.

Foch : This is not peace. This is a 20 year armistice.

Thanks Ajax. Here's a bit more info.....maybe it will jog your memory. So I used the GC scenario and there are more AD's that exhibit this behavior. What they all have in common is the target hex is very close to the staging hex. Like 5 hexes or less. So close that I can't adjust the flight path (which is another thing I never read about).

Years ago, pre-release, we experimented with all bombers getting two bombing passes during a strike. It was an abstraction to increase the sortie count, especially by ground support aircraft. We decided not to go with that. It's possible some old code is kicking in to cause this in some rare situations. At this point, unless you have a situation where the double attack repeats from a save, it's too difficult to track down and fix. If you come up with a save, you can email it to 2by3@2by3games.com with info on where the double attack is happening. Thanks.

Joel,

I have a save and I'm happy to kick it over to you. I'm not sure this is necessarily a bug, could be WAD for all I know. But I'm pretty sure it is not documented. Thank you for the reply!
