Eagle Day full campaign Day by Day
Eagle Day full campaign Day by Day
Hello. Some years ago, I bought this wonderful game. It ran very slowly, and I spent way too much time clicking through the cumbersome interface. To my delight, I've just become aware that the game has been updated several times since I bought it, and I've decided to give it another shot. I never really got good at the game, and there were many mechanics in the game that I didn't understand. Here, I'll be posting about my game day by day. I hope you can give me useful input and answer my many beginner questions.
My English is AI-assisted.

Re: Eagle Day full campaign Day by Day
The Plan
Besides winning the air war over England,
I want to have fun and enjoy this old niche computer game.
Objectives
To win through air superiority.
If that fails, I'll play the longer version of the air war.
Radar Stations
I remember spending many resources spotting and taking down radar stations.
In this game, I’ll ignore them and see if the resources can be used better elsewhere.
Since I'm aiming for air superiority, my primary targets will be primary airfields and oil storage near the airfields.
Then, secondary airfields, oil refineries, and chemical industries.
If I miss the goal of victory through air superiority, I will shift my focus to the area around London,
which by that time will be surrounded by bombed airfields.
There are many AREA and industrial targets there, which I hope will be sufficient to achieve final victory.

Re: Eagle Day full campaign Day by Day
I will spread all my attacks from sunrise to sunset and try to use decoys to lure the AI into putting far more planes in the air than I do over the course of the day, thereby tiring them out more than my pilots.
Regarding bombing missions, I am uncertain about the use of fighter sweeps.
Should I cover the airspace over nearby airfields and hope for the small chance of a jackpot where I catch planes as they are landing?
Or should I try to cover the airspace over my bombing target?
Fighter-Bombers
They will sneak along the coast and carry out surprise attacks on airfields near the coast.
Stuka
They are very vulnerable, even with escort. I have experienced heavy losses when using them.
I will try to conserve them at the start of the campaign and only use them sparingly for targets along the coast.
DO 17
I don't have many of them, so I'm unsure how significant their role will be.
HE 111
My favorite plane in the game.
They will play a major role and will be included in most attacks on targets in southern England.
JU 88
My heaviest plane, with the longest range.
I hope to reserve them for attacks deep in the hinterland, which I’ll carry out during full moon periods in the game.
109
I need to be careful not to waste too many of them on unimportant missions, as I tend to run out of them.
110
The plane nobody asked for.
I don't know much about aircraft, so maybe that's a bit harsh, but I've never really learned to use them correctly in the game.
They usually end up taking heavy losses, and I'm not sure if they actually protect my bombers when I use them as escorts.

TURN 01
I will focus on attacks on primary airfields and on spotting targets for the following days' attacks.
To the north, I will try to locate oil industry targets, so I’m ready to hit them when the full moon comes.
I’m considering moving KG100 from Brest to Norway, so I have some experienced pilots who can hit the targets.

TURN 01
I had hoped that the English planes would cluster together in southeast England and patrol, while I sent my planes around that area.
It was partially successful. The English didn’t put as many planes in the air as I had hoped, and they also didn’t go after my decoys.

RAF Sorties: 841, RAF Losses: 25
Luftwaffe Sorties: 1325, Luftwaffe Losses 28
I had hoped to lure more English planes into the air.

TURN02
My update from turn 2 went down the drain. I’m playing the game in windowed mode, but it tends to crash when I tab out to take screenshots and write notes.

Re: Eagle Day full campaign Day by Day
TURN03
This turn involves several attacks on the primary airfield, as well as oil storage facilities and refineries. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the moonlight will be enough for my nighttime raids to be successful
Outside the map is two night raids on Aberdeen Shell

Wow. It turned into a turn with heavy losses on both sides.
My Bf 109-4 melts away too quickly.

I got a few good hits. I wonder how many attempts it will take to hit Aberdeen Shell? Night bombing seems to be difficult.

The new version of the map looks much better. However, the industrial icons are a bit too small for my eyes. I wish they had color-coded them.

Re: Eagle Day full campaign Day by Day
The game either becomes unresponsive or crashes when I tab out.
It ruins the experience.
I’ll try to fix this issue before I continue playing.

Re: Eagle Day full campaign Day by Day
Did you try using the "Windows" key to Tab out? it's always been stable for me in W10 to enter and exit the game. Let us know if you need any help, I was looking forward to this.
Oh, don't expect much damage with night bombing on anything other than Area and Port targets. This is true for BTR as well.

Campaign restarted
Turn 1
Planning

Debriefing
Since it's so difficult to hit the oil rig up north, I’ll try targeting Scapa Flow instead. It's a large port with a capacity of 10. It turned out to be a much easier target to hit than the oil refinery.
I also managed to hit a couple of oil targets around London.
My attacks on airfields were a bit disappointing, especially the one with all my fighter bombers on Coltishall.
I had really hoped to wipe Kenley and Biggin Hill off the map.

Losses
It was a tough day for my JU88 and HE111. They took most of my losses

Conclusion turn 1
I’ll have to be satisfied with the oil targets I hit and see what turn 2 bring
Today's question: Does the size of the bombing target matter? Is a port easier to hit than an oil storage? Do I use my fighter bombers best against oil storage or airfields?

Turn 2
Planning

I send my fighter sweeps in a direct line towards the airfields. My bombing missions take a slight detour around the southeastern tip of England. I’m hoping the British interceptors take the bait and engage my fighters, allowing my bombing missions to reach their targets undisturbed.
There’s moonlight tonight, so I’m trying my luck with bombing a remote oil storage facility in Wales.
Up north, I’ll try night after night to hit the oil refinery. I’ve relocated a unit marked with an “N” up there. It’s supposed to be some kind of navigation equipment. I hope it improves my results with night bombing in Scotland.
Debriefing
As expected, the two large raids up north only left a minor dent (7) in the oil refinery, while the other completely missed its target.
Down south, things are going much better. The German planes have hit a couple of oil targets. One of the airfields I struck had planes on the runway, so a handful of Spitfires were destroyed.
I can see they’ve also hit a couple of radar stations. Those must have been secondary targets.
The oil refinery in Wales took a decent hit.

Losses

The losses were about as expected, most of them being bombers. I’m worried that my fighters are depleting too quickly. Maybe I should ease up on the sweeping. I’ve also lost more JU88s than I’m comfortable with—I really need them for long-distance raids. I’ll have to opt for using the HE111s more often over the next few days. I’ve got plenty of those in reserve.
Conclusion
This was a much better day than yesterday.
Today's question: What is the range of patrolling when I perform a fighter sweep? There are a couple of airfields just south of London that are close together. Can I cover two airfields with one sweep?

Re: Eagle Day full campaign Day by Day
Turn 3
Thick cloud cover today.
Often, missions are canceled, or bombers fail to find their targets due to thick cloud cover. It’s still early in the campaign, and there’s good moonlight tonight, so I’d rather not waste time with planes sitting idle on the ground. I’ve decided to shift to a high number of nightly raids for now. If I’m lucky, the clouds might clear during the day. Time will tell.

Planning
I’m trying my luck with a few small sweeps targeting unguarded airfields. Due to the weather, I’m planning only limited action around London. I’m hoping to repeat my success of hitting an airfield with planes on the runway. Through the night, I’ll attempt to strike all the primary airfields I have intel on along the eastern side. Up north, it’ll likely be another round of night raids that don’t hit much of anything.
Throughout the day, I’m sending multiple reconnaissance planes over the Liverpool and Manchester area. With so many missions there, I should be able to gather the intel I need for the next few nights’ raids.

Debriefing

Shell Aberdeen was finally a bingo
(71)
Other notable results from the day include raids on Kenley and Tangmere.
The rest of the day’s planned raids were either a total bust or canceled.
Losses
Apart from the losses of JU88s today, the casualties from today’s missions don’t concern me much.

Conclusion
I feel like I’m falling a bit behind with my bombing efforts. I’m hoping for significant success with my industrial bombings in Liverpool and Manchester over the next two nights so I can recover the lost progress.
Today's question: How should I handle thick cloud cover? Should I give the pilots a well-deserved day off? If I choose to bomb, should I try to hide in the cloud cover or fly beneath it? What are your experiences?

Hi.
My main concern here is not your tactics or reasoning. All those can be tweaked or pursued more vigorously over time. And time is what you have. Try not to finish in 7 days what you have been given @6 times more.
This is most certainly a marathon and not a sprint.
Keep up the effort.
Mark.

Hi Mark. Thanks for your advice. It sounds like a really good idea not to burn out over the course of a week but to focus on the long-term goal
I played up to turn 7 before I saw your post, so I'll start slowing down from turn 7.

Turn 4
Planning
Now that I have fresh images from Liverpool, I'll try targeting the oil industry tonight. In the good moonlight, I’ll also attempt to hit some of the primary airfields that are out of reach of my fighter escort. Almost all of today’s missions will be flown at night. I’m looking forward to seeing how effective they’ll be.
keyboard test online mac
Briefing
It seems to be quite challenging to bomb at night. I’ve tried flying at low altitude (6,000–8,000) to increase the success rate. I can’t hide my excitement that Gleaner Oil in Scotland was hit—that makes up for all the other misses in the Liverpool area. The primary airfields that were hit feel like a sweet little bonus.

Losses
Wow. The losses are remarkably low compared to flying during the day, especially considering the over 700 sorties

Conclusion
I’ll make sure to fully take advantage of the few days each month with good moonlight during the next full moon.

Turn 5
For turn 5, I forgot to take a picture of my missions. The plan for the day, in short, is to send more night raids to Liverpool—I’m bound to hit something eventually. The attrition of airfields around London continues. Today, I’ll have a lot of fighters in the air. I’ll try to completely shut down the airspace over the airfields I plan to attack, both before and after sending out my bombers.
Briefing
I'm making progress in Liverpool. Last night's raids managed to dent (5) a power plant!

Losses
Wow, that was definitely a rough day to be flying a Hurricane.

Conclusion
Whether it was pure luck, I can’t say. I’ll try to see if I can replicate the result another day. It seems that having many fighters in the air allowed me to cover both Northolt and Heathrow at the same time, and it paid off.
Today's question: Is there a way I can target barrage balloons with my fighters? I noticed I lost some of low-flying bombers to balloon cables. It was, however, a small satisfaction to see that Hurricanes can also hit those cables!

Turn 6
In turn 6, not much happened. I’m still sending many bombers north without seeing results. I gave my planes around London a break and focused on the airfields west of London. That was fairly successful. They’re all close to the coast and not difficult targets. Additionally, some radar stations served as secondary targets.

Re: Eagle Day full campaign Day by Day
There are some slight variations with target size/target type. Cites and Ports are easier to hit than factories and airfields during day bombing. Night bombing you can do damage to cities and ports even if the planes are a bit off target but they need to be nuts-on to hit other targets and that is very difficult to do at night. In BoB I would use your FB to strike airfields and leave your level bombers to hit ports/cities/rail.
Offensive patrolling after a sweep mission is only limited by available fuel so set the patrol location near your sweep target. I find the best use of offensive patrolling is to provide additional escort over a target by drawing away interceptors from attacking a bomber raid. If you patrol near an airfield the close escort may strafe and cause damage. It's all about timing.
Use bad weather to rest and redeploy, but you can raid the coastal ports etc. by sneaking in under the cloud ceiling. If you fly raids in between the ceiling (base) and cloud height you are blind all around and will be lucky to hit anything. The game tracks your aircraft vertically within the cloud mass.
You cannot target balloons. Your more experienced pilots will sometimes go rouge and hunt for them on their own if they spot them.
