Need ideas for Lua script

I am writing a scenario and borrowing an idea from "Top Gun Maverick" for it's main event. I have not been able to duplicate however.
What I'm looking for is to make two targets as in the movie...and the first one must be destroyed before the second can be targeted. I had tried Lua to actually create the second when the first is destroyed but that leaves too much lag time for a striker mere seconds behind to even identify a target to fire at...and having the target already there and "zeroed in on" mostly erased the need to hit the first target.
Any ideas?

Maybe make the new target autodetectable
